@@arjun._.bbC6 Actually, the largest empires were built using horse bows and spears. From Japan to the Balcans almost every country and culture along the historic period before the rise of the gunpowder did use variants of horse bows. Long bows were used mostly in a few western territories in center and western Europe, in more static fights, but albeit some battles were won and lost with those, no nation was able to conquer the same amount of territories than the hose bows allowed to gain to armies relying in cavalry using compact compound bows.

in my opinion mixed sparring is better as HEMA practice than many think because it's more battle-like scenario than the same swords. And it's more like actuall martial art, not a sport. (only opinion). Ps. i have once heard an argument, when one person claimes that if in longsword tournament one fighter has 5cm longer sword than the other, then there is no point in fight between them, i found that really silly.

As said, what we practice is unarmored dueling and self-defense based on the historical manuals. Martial arts were not used only on battlefields. In fact arguably martial arts were of low importance in battles, compared to tactics, logistics, discipline, etc.

If 5cm of sword length difference really disqualifies a fencer, then we would see no short fencers at the tournament level. I'm 6'5" and I, rather shamefully, get out-fenced by a 5'7" guy fairly often. He's a quick little guy. And in fact, a short woman I've fenced often, she's 5'2", has switched to a shorter longsword and it has vastly improved her fencing. I think using the sword that fits your body proportions is more important and wielding an anime length sword for the reach advantage.

This new experimental form of tennis looks really interesting! On a curious note, despite being very difficult to close in a polearm user without getting hit, would it be better for one of them to try and grab the shaft instead of actually trying to hit you so that the other guy have a safer time engaging? Also, those were really effective 2v1 tactics but not without risks, but it would have been better if one of them had a shield.

The problem is closing the distance to be able to reach the polearm. You have to somehow get close enough without getting stabbed.

True enough, but my point is if you get lucky and get close enough, would it be better to grapple the weapon than to simply attack outright? In my mind, a simple attack can be blocked and while the 1st attacker rewind for the follow-up or to expect counter-attack, the pole-arm user can then deal with the 2nd guy. So the safer tactic would be that if you can get close, better get personal.

single handed sword is really weak against long reach weapons, one way is to try and keep the bind on the polearm (instead of just smashing it aside, wich is safer) then as soon as you have some form of control you need to rush past the point of the polearm and try to kill the opponent. The opponent on the other hand needs to run backwards even using just one hand on the shaft making a sort of triangle, this creates a lot of distance, is a very good defense position but not an optimal attacking position. We do viking reenactment (following the Vikings group as ruleset) and i can tell you that having a shield makes the spear very weak.

One constant trend I've seen in the "What if you do X" comments is that people talkin a turn-based style. For example, "The enemy has a polearm, rush in and grab it by the shaft!" ignores completly what the enemy is doing, and what he can do. Any polearm user will want to avoid you from grasping their weapon, be it by attacking you, moving it out of the way, moving themselves as a whole, etc. Remember kids, your plan might be great and powerful, but the enemy has a counterplan for that.

Not to mention that "What to do if someone grabs your shaft" is probably one of the most basic things to cover in most polearm training. Oh, you're just going to grab my spear one-handed? Great! Pardon me while I yank you off balance and use your own hand as a lever point to swing the butt-end around and shatter your shin bone.

The problem is that some people can't separate hollywood and video/ table top game combat from reality. These movies/ shows, and games have trained them to think in a certain way in regards to combat. To be fair though, most people have never actually seen any of the weapons Skall shows on his channel in real life, much less actually wielded one.

Trading to fight against a polearm probably includes closing the distance. The thing people ignore when making those comments is that the training would work on precision because the movement would require great timing. It should be a reactive move. For example when a polearm swings wide try to step in and absorb the blow of the shaft and pi it under your arm. During a forward thrust try to bait the enemy into over extending then instead of dodging to the back dodge to the side and grab the shaft or swing at it and attempt to break it. Sounds easy but would require a lot of training for timing.

i played a bit with spear/poleaxe vs 1h sword and i can say, by my experience, that grabbing the shaft is not optimal at all cause the opponent can be very swift and by doing so you focus away from the real target and on the end of the weapon. This means a lot of the times i ended up grabbing the blade of the spear rather than the shaft. Other than that if you grab the far end the shaft can still use some leverage against you, playing with your balance. Not to mention you more often than not will end receiving blows to your finger if you are not over precise. I found that the best thing to do was going half-swording, that gives a steady defense that is not thrown away easily since you use both your hands, the blow is deflected inside your arms and not on the side, mantaining a favorable leverage and lets you close the distance easily going for the stab o the pommel blow, getting inside the guard of the spear with a decise step forward. This was my best since you deflect the spear thrust but you mantain control of the shaft applying pressure with the sword. I won't say it becomes easy, but this is the most effective by my experience (polearms and staves are my favourite weapons) PS as you mentioned in some older videos, you cannot just chop the shaft with a couple of blows like in the movies, for the ones who suggested it

Ok but if you grab the edge with your hand you wont die and its totally viable if your wearing a glove. Also maybe there would be a counter but I doubt you could counter in time to stop the other opponent in this scenario.

I remember watching in a pole arm vs pole arm sparring where both people also had a dagger on their belt, one guy grabbed the other guys shaft and then the guy let go of his spear to charge him with the dagger and stab him. It happened really fast.

@Xaal you won't die buy it's a huge risk. grabbing your own sword by the edge means you have a firm grip before moving it, trying to catch a moving blade may still cut you, and a cut on the palm may mean tendon damage, so you actuallty lose the use of your hand. not to mention that going too fast on a moving stick may deflect it rather than letting you grab it. In addiction when you go for the grab you expose your empty hand and your side without putting up a defense, and even if the grab is successful, you still hold only onehand on the shaft, your opponent 2, so he gets a huge advantage on you. Seriously, if you are able to give it a few tries you understand that grabbing the spear may be a chance and open up to interesting works but it's not a solid move to use, it may but i'd rather not put my faith in that catch, too many variables involved @Ethan Yeah, it's pretty nice to see, i found this move in various treatises, it's a very enlightening manoeuvre: the weapon is your mind and versatility, not the thing in your hands, like Fiore de Liberi (i think to recall) wrote in his manual

@Gatto Bardo Well your chances of beating the distance with a parry are far lower I found a video actually where its a spear user doing 1v1s the sword users lost consistantly because none of them grabbed the spear where as one guy who was using a knife managed to grab the spear 4 or 5 times and basically every time he grabbed it it was gameover for the spear man. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rLCTh6dm1q--emg.html based on the video id say parry/dodge into grab then close the distance is the best option

(Also, I run and play fantasy roleplaying games with a heavy emphasis on this type of fighting, mixed weapons, and seeing it is quite a treat!)

I love these its so educational for me to learn the practical applications for the different weapons used and I actually can see the practical applications for modern days weapons in a way just from the discipline needed for the weapons of a bigon era. Its not about just going out there and swing a sword around its patience and watching the opponent(or in this case several opponents) and making strikes and feigns if you know it can be give you an advantages in the battle to win. Well done dude keep up the great work.

When it comes to dealing with pole arms, a sword user has to bait out a thrust or swing, then close the gap quickly while trying to immobilize the pointy end while being ready to get smacked with butt end. As a pole arm user, high agility to parry and feint makes it easy to redirect opponents attacks and keep your weapon from being caught up which is fatal in a real fight. You should try axes though, being able to "hook" the spear with practise makes it the most effective one handed weapon against pole arms in my opinion.

those Purpleheart partisans rock! Mixed weapon sparring in HEMA is a lot of fun. Very few manuscripts give any specifics about how two different weapons should be used against each other, so it turns sparring into more of a mental game; "what can/will he do with his weapon?" "What can I do with mine?"

Yeah one of the main challenges with using a polearm is learning how to be aggressive, using your reach to take what are essentially free shots at your opponents, while at the same time being ready to retreat or switch range with your weapon as soon as it's needed. Either way you did pretty well for someone who hasn't used a polearm for very long, especially against two people.

The video looks great! Thank you for posting it. One issue that is not taken into account - and can't given the nature of the practice - a long sword could severely damage the wood of the spear if not outright split it. Yet if the spearman can protect the shaft, his advantage remains. Well done everyone.

Julian Schuetze right on. Also, funny: "why didn't they try that thing they did towards the end earlier?“ Comments section strategy is all well and good, but sometimes it takes people a couple of minutes of practice to develop an optimal solution. Especially the ones that require coordination.

Especially because chances are they haven't spent much time to discuss what their strategy was and they're going into it as blind as Skall was. And don't get me wrong, it's nice to discuss strategy and ask questions in comment sections. But so many of them have these "What's wrong with these idiots, the real strategy is obvious" tone to it which is ridiculous.

I know right? I also think watching failed attempts is very instructive for beginners. If they start out showing perfect tactics, people never figure out why those are preferred. Best to start at the beginning and work up to advanced techniques. "Shoulda, woulda, coulda" commentators should make some more sparring videos for us to watch. Although I assume the first five minutes will look exactly like this...

Guys, a good video, very revealing. In terms of mistakes! Fencing is not only a tactic but also a strategy! Spearman - strive for one opponent to overlap the other (you need to move). Guys with blades - acted correctly, dispersed to attack from different sides, but there was a lack of synchronization of work (apparently there was no plan for the battle). Well, in general, do not quit, and you will succeed!

I feel like in a real scenario, this would turn into a movement endurance thing. The smartest choice for the 2 swords is to get one of them behind you, so they should be moving fast to make that happen. In response, the polearm would need to move as well to ensure that the two are always at his front, so alot of backpedaling. If this is your life on the line, you won't run into that spear, you are gonna get around or not go in at all. This is considering an open field with no other combatants, highest endurance wins. At best the polearm only gets one of them while the other sprints down his back and shoves a thrust in him. Dominic Waters in fact this happens. Take into acount that the battlefield isn't a perfectly flat and clean tennis field ;) so every stumple over a big twig or ball of grass could ebd the race for victory. Waiting for opportunity, exhausting and endurance.

I feel like the outcome of scenario's like this depend on the length of the handle of the spear. Short handles make for faster movement yet longer onces give you that reach advantage.

Problem with blunt weapons is they hurt you even through that bodyprotection stuff...It could break a skull getting smacked with a big chain and you cant controll it as easy as a pole but if you take a too light chain you never know if it would have done anything

I do lots of mixed sparring, and mostly the advantages of a pole weapon go away when the opponent gets used to fighting them. Depending on the length of the pole there are points of measure that are advantageous for the smaller weapon that are extremely difficult for the pole. This is especially true when the opponent has a shield.

It took the invention of the Roman shield wall and the javelin along with combined arms to break the phalanx. Javelins to weigh down and ruin the hoplon shields, cavalry to exploit the slow moving formation, and large interlocking shields to deny the sarissa its reach advantage. Which is to say, spears OP, too hard to counter.

Easier said than done mate, the lower body is one of the least popular areas for attacking and for a good reason, it’s easier to protect and the attacker leaves their head completely exposed, so aiming for someone’s thighs is pretty risky. Not impossible though, just not as easy as you try to make it sound. And so what if his thighs are unarmored? He’s still better armored than them all. He may have some exposed spots but there are some heroes who have a lot more spots to hit, heck some of them you can hit pretty much anywhere and they’re screwed.

Rxmonste that's true, however his very bulky, and could possibly make him struggle irl. I think that nobushi to a certain extent, but mostly warlord and warden could be good counter. They have relatively medium armor on all of their body and weapons that could maybe permit them to close the distance and stab him in the femoral artery, but yeah he is a beast. But remember, a polaxe is not a spear, you can't feint a stab with it, the recovery du to its weight is too high

The GhostHero Plate Armor doesn’t slow you down as much in real life as its shown in video games, the speed is pretty equivalent, however I have to agree on this one with you, that fantasy style armor the lawbringer is wearing looks terrible, too bulky and heavy for any agile movement if it existed in real life at least if it’s as thick as it looks.

Really love these new tennis court sparring videos skall ! I'd really like to see a greatsword vs longsword , polearm , axe , or maybe even greatsword vs greatsword videos in such a format ( mainly because i love your content and want your take on the subject. I'd also want it because i haven't seen much about greatsword sparring , like anywhere , i read its considered a polearm ( or atleast functions very similarly to one , like a poleaxe or staff ) as far as techniques go though , so I'm curious to see what it could do , and hpw viable would it be in a 1v1 duel )

If the two Swordsman had worked together in a more coordinated fashion they would have had a much better chance. They stayed too close together more often than not and when they did split up they mostly took the win. Its a psychological tendency to want to stick close to your ally, as theres a mental comfort in having your flank covered by a friend, making you feel more protected but its a deceiving feeling of safety as you arent really any safer than if he wasnt there because he is focused on protecting himself, not you. Only if you both had shields would it be reasonable to stick close together, but even then with only two shields its hardly enough for the making of a shield wall, but still. the best way for 2 fighters to over come another more skilled or better equiped opponent is to split up and keep him moving. Ive done lots of sparring with friends, once as many as 20 up against 20, and that was a lesson we learned pretty quick after one particular fight. 1 guy was left on his team with a long pole arm, and he fought off and won against 5 guys because they bunched together and didnt spread out and surround him as they should have, making an easy target to thrust at.

2 vs 1 it is almost impossible in narrow space to circle a opponent wielding a polearm, because the opponent tend to move back and use the reach to control the fight movement. But 5 vs 1 yeah you can easily surround a single opponent (with some casualties).

I've seen some historical european polearms that have something like a metal ball/spike at the butt end. It's not technically a pommel, I think, but can still count if we loosen the definition ;)

The people with the swords seem to be trying to keep their free arm out of the way, but wouldn't it be more effective to use it as a way of redirecting the spear? Edit: One of them does it at 4:30, at least

Commie Cuddles saber fencing evolved around the era of bayonets and pikes, so no don't think modern humans can grasp the context. given that a large gash in the arm could prove fatal,in that regard the idea of putting your arm out there is ridiculous. My guess even masters back then would suggest you run or pick up a polearm or range weapons.

Why are they not using their off hand to seize you spear and gut you, and what would it take to chop the shaft with a sword? ... started before the very end, why were they not doing that more? Deflect the spear step in kick the knee... Grab the spear on your thrust and pull you into the sword? And you, did I miss you swinging at the legs so you can fulcrum up as they try to dodge? This is what I thought of but my practice was all with a wooden sword I made out of a fence post and duct tape as a kid, so what do I know?

How long do you think their arms are? What makes attacking a polearm user so dangerous is moving into that area where the sword has no chance of reaching but the polearm can strike and thrust rapidly.

It takes quite a bit to chop the shaft off, not as viable as you might expect. If you grab the shaft of the spear the spear wielder can adjust the position of the spear and use your own weight to impale you.

I'm pretty sure that cutting the shaft with a sword would be impossible regardless of the design of the sword assuming the sword is usable to begin with. The sword would have to be very heavy to cut through a spear shaft. Most axes couldn't do it in one or even several strikes.

But that's why you could just run in and slap the pole away and go in for the stab. At least that is what we would do with toy swords when we had them. I'm sure you could be fast enough to do this without getting hit or the opponent dodging.

I appreciate the video.The combination of polearm reach and video fits your HEMA style perfect.Sword users look pretty shy at the start ( I think that was done deliberately ) You seem to be all natural with polearms.Ankle/calf to head aggressive style looks neat.The move from the sword user at 4:30 might have ended the sparring over and over again ,with one handed techniques from the start if it was practiced so. I believe you were all trying to show different techniques as much as you can and spared one arm to the last.Please keep posting more of these nice videos.Stay cool. :P
