Dear Kiki and Dan, I’ve been watching a variety of your adventures in different order. But now starting from the beginning! This one has me shaking my head in amazement!! Being architects must be a serious advantage. But all the wiring, battery knowledge, electric motor finesse put together is in my view a thing of beauty!! You are already most of the way to being true sailors. Namaste!!

You guys are so cruel! The anticipation is killing me. I wanna see that boat prove everyone in the Marine industry wrong concerning an electric powered boat. This could be REVOLUTIONary in the way props are turned in the future! I applaud you guys and look forward to every episode. Cheers (and and can't wait to say, safe sailing)!

I do admire very much not only ingenuity and craftmanship you show at refitting your boat, but also how you are able to work together. Not every woman wants to share all the hardships of such work. I have been always dreaming of what you are doing now, but due to political and economic reasons never was able to fulfill my dreams ( majority of my life I spent under communist regime). I enjoy very much watching reports of your adventures. I wish you happy sailing through life together.

The person who told you that it was a "Sea-Pex" motor didn't know what the heck he was talking about! It is a sepex motor, short for SEParately EXcited! It means that the stator and rotor windings get power independently of each other. This allows a great deal of control over the motor. Basically, the amount of current through the armature (usually the rotor) controls the overall power output. The strength of the field windings (usually the stator) controls the torque and counter emf characteristics. Essentially, the armature current can be thought of as a throttle; the field winding can be thought of as a transmission. To a point, more armature current means more power. A strong field means more torque at low RPMs, but limits the top speed. A relatively weak field means higher RPMs, but less torque. Since both the windings are separated, the currents can be changed on the fly, and a good controller can optimize performance at any speed.

The electric system looks great! I just read elon musk's book and his vision to take on the auto industry by making electric cars. And he did just that. I hope you guys are starting the same trend towards boats. Boats add solar, wind and hydro energy already, why not have it power the engine. And who knows maybe one day in the not to far future lithium ion batteries will be able to be used on boats. Keep up the good work, it's very inspiring!

great job on the electrical system for the engine. i am an aircraft electrician by trade, and your wiring is done well enough to go on a aircraft. good attention to detail, and high quality work. keep up that kind of maintenance, you wont have any problems with the boat at all. looking forward to all your future videos.

+Sean “SV Inopii” Thompson While most boaters have issues with fuel lines and oil filters, I'm wondering when the bane of all boaters will start to effect Uma's propulsion system, corrosion. All of that metal on metal contact, if you don't have the right metals involved, can quickly become a corrosion nightmare. But that's all part of the learning experience of this project. Props to you guys for attempting this! We are all watching and learning from your work!
@wornslapout
@wornslapout 8 жыл бұрын
+John Lampe from what I can see, if there is corrosion, it would be a short job to sort out. Ten minutes to take out the electric motor and maybe ten more to disassemble now that they know how and another ten to softly sand away or replace bushings. Within a hours time or less they would be back to functionality whereas a diesel would take weeks to sort out maybe months if a part has to be ordered in some tropical destination. I think these two will change they way Marine boat makers think about the future propulsion and the environment. If this works, it would be like cold fusion to the boating world.
@johnlampe3258
@johnlampe3258 8 жыл бұрын
I was thinking more about their wiring and related connections than the motor itself. Since much of that is make shift, I'm assuming not everything is marine spec and different metals. But as you say, since they built it, they should be able to sort it out quickly! I agree with you about the paradigm shift implications of this project. I suspect this video will shortly be their most watched!
@wornslapout

+John Lampe Exactly, and with the U.S. EPA being what it is...it will not be long before boaters will be harshly punished for the dreaded oil and fuel floating around their boats and more regulations regarding oil changes, fill ups etc. This system would prevent all of those issues. And if they could buy gel batteries that would prevent any gasses from acid and further corrosion to wiring, or at least help. Lots of people are watching and eagerly awaiting these results long term. If it works well enough, why wouldn't we all throw out our rotting expensive diesels?

+Ted Smith Not enough lithium in the world to make enough batteries, and LEAD ACID is not exactly benign. Diesel is a very high density energy source, well proven, and dependable. I like to see these kinds of experiments tho.

There is a product called a commutator stone for seating the brushes and cleaning the commutator bars. This is used without removing the motor. Also you may want to figure on having a source of compressed air to keep the motor blown out as the carbon dust from the brushes can cause shorts in the motor. That is a pretty common set of brushes but you may want to keep a spare set. As soon as the brush wears even with the top of the rigging they need to be replaced. The lower in the rigging the brush gets, the less spring tension there is on them and it accelerates the wear from that point. A good rule of thumb for maintenance is 250 hours or every 90 days. Until next time fair winds.

It is all coming together quiet nicely you guys ! I'm really glad you decided to go with the electric motor because I had talked about doing something similar for a houseboat. I worked as a golf and turf specialist for years, so I was around golf carts a lot and got to go to Club Car factory in Augusta Georgia. Real impressive and the best cart on the market in my opinion. It could go 36 + holes on one charge with 2 fat guys and their clubs ! LOL I was going to use 3 banks of batteries so 2 could be solar charging as 1 was being used. I also was going to modify 2 heavy duty trolling motors as bow and stern thrusters for docking. Its not like I was planning on skiing behind the boat or anything, I just like the idea of clean, quiet reusable power. And the houseboat could just drop anchor if it needed to be charged where a sailboat could just continue on its way ! Great job guys and I can't wait for the sea trials ! Fair wind and sunshine to ya both !

What will you use for cooking? I went to an Origo/Dometic spirit stove as like you I'm brushed DC. Sparks and gas (not American Gas!) don't mix. Also suggest a collar on shaft to stop the collar of the PSS seal being able to slide if the grub screws come loose. I also tapped the end of my motor and prop shaft M8 and used penny washers to stop either sliding out under load, which could happen surfing down waves. Fun watching you doing it all. Takes time eh!

Nice job. I also am going to convert a an old gas/Desiel sailboat to electric. Looking for one in our area with a blown engine that I can get cheap/free. One thing to consider... Some manufacturers used props of different pitches to compensate for the motor being over/under powered. I.e. A 30 ft sailboat with an Atomic 4 30hp gas engine can't transfer that much energy to the water as it only takes about 10hp to get to hull speed. So the pitch of the prop is at a min. You may need to match you prop to the new motor so you get max efficiency out of the system.

Totally on pins and needles for the sea trials and so pleased to see them really doing the wiring super heavy duty. I don't remember what their solar capacity is but expect they'll wind up expanding that to any available space. I don't remember a wind gen but guessing they'll have at least one of those in the end. I think this electric propulsion can work but depending on how good they are at sailing in less then perfect conditions combined with the patience to sit tight and just chill if there is no wind. I don't remember seeing a vent fan for the battery bank....might not be a bad idea though small fans don't take a lot of power. It wouldn't have to run 24/7 but during charging could be a plan unless those are the lithium batteries which I don't think generate hydrogen or explosive gases.

Interesting to watch your progress. A couple observations to offer. One is that the discoloration on the commutator of the armature is desirable and should never be "cleaned". You mentioned that it was uneven, so giving it a skin pass in a lathe to true it up is not unreasonable. Regarding the abrasive paper, you mentioned "sand paper" which is light in color and that is the right thing to use. In the video, the paper actually used looked dark which is likely to be something other than sand and is often conductive and therefore should never be used on a commutator. Lastly, the reason that control panels are built on steel backplanes is that they do not burn. Please pay very close attention to the current rating match between your contactors, wiring and fuses. Also, be careful to detect an overload situation such as a fouled prop. This will lug the motor and cause it to draw more current (could be a lot more). As I mentioned the last time, compound motors such as yours require field loss protection to avoid burning up the armature by applying power to it without a field present (the field provides the counter EMF that limits the armature current to a safe value). It would be wise to test that your armature voltage is not applied when you have no field current flowing. If this can occur, I advise that you add a provision such as a current relay in the field circuit to act as a permissive to the control for the armature voltage (example: remove the output from the speed control going to the armature controller). This is all DC Motor 101 so it should not be hard to find information on any of it. (I do industrial electrical maintenance and I design and build electrical control and automation systems).

i've never had boat experience but had years of experience with motive power in the fork truck application. electric motors give maximum torque at 0 rpms and a clutch is not needed. however a speed increase would be beneficial in the gearing of same.. reduction of voltage will work for reverse. but speed needs a transmission. again no clutch is needed here. if your motor reaches acceptable speed in it's designed range go no further. if you want more the introduction of a gear solution is wanted. what you have already done is very impressive. you are patient, you think things out clearly. then you act. not a lot of people do this. you are absolutely the persons who should circumnavigate the world in a sailboat. the sea will test you but you've built a stout ship and know how to fix her. good on you and nothing but good for your future..........

Great job with the electric engine. I'm very optimistic that it will work as you expected. On KZfaq there is a channel (Eco Sailing Project) with a few French boys who succeeded in circumnavigating the world in their sailing yacht by means of an electric engine (and their sails of course). Very smart and environmentally friendly idea, I think. In case you don't speak French, their videos also have English subtitles. Their goal seems to be to inspire as many people as possible to switch from oil to electric engine on their boat. I think that's great. What do you actually think of salt water fuel cell-power on a sailing yacht?

If you can understand how a flashlight works or how to make a simple circuit the rest you pick up along the way. We’re pretty big proponents of just starting with what you have and learning as you go.

@@SailingUma Thanks a lot for your quick reply. I may or may not undertake such an engine replacement, it will depend on what I actually discover when I see the boat (it is in Scotland, I am in south of France, and Covid situation forbids flying there, though the seller and I had already agreed on the conditions). I sure wil have more questions if I decide to go for such a major refit!

The electric propulsion will work fine-the problem will be battery capacity,range and how quickly you can recharge. Don't forget the propeller,I doubt if it is the most efficient for electric propulsion. Have a look at Lynch type motors.

So you said temporary. What's the long term plan for control? Also, did I see correctly that the toggle switch is forward and backward? Very nice job. Can't wait to see the sea trial.
