I can't believe that I was raised in Wales before moving to London and attending school until 18. At NO time were we educated about the role of the monarchy, the British Empire and it's transition to the Commonwealth even though half the school was usually made up of kids whose parents or grandparents had come from a Commonwealth country. We learned about the Irish potato famine but not how the Irish were used as slaves to build Britain itself and the colonies long after the abolition of slavery. We never got taught how a law is made in Britain or even how the electoral system works. Ask most people " how is a PM elected?" and they will be stuck. We never learnt about this united kingdom and the relationship between the devolved governments and what powers they do or don't have, then what Westminster is to England but also to the UK. Nothing about the House of Commons workings or the House of Lords and the half reform by Blair which leaves NOW 92 hereditary peers and Bishops, mentioning them how about we never learnt about The Church of England being ESTABLISHED and what that means! That the PM chooses the Bishops and the King approves. We just had a Coronation with no attempt to explain what it was about. Probably they're embarrassed to use language at the annointment of 1953 today "and here comes the most sacred moment of the service,the hallowing,a moment so old that history cannot go deep enough to contain it. A moment betwixt the Queen and the divine when she's annointed as Zadok and preists of antiquity were annointed. A moment so sacred it's hidden from the eyes of all". Now I have educated myself and I understood everything, most, but how many people didn't understand why the Coronation had to be held at all? That it's actually a lawful requirement? I could go on but you get the idea.
