I would say that gold/platinum records are more like trophies awarded to athletes. Doctors don’t ‘collect’ certificates. They need them to be able to exercise their profession. Musicians don’t necessarily need to have gold/platinum records awards to play music, do they? But if they get them it shows they have sold a lot of product and that not necessarily implies that product is of the highest quality lol.

@@dashofawesome64 a stream is not a purchase. That counting at all is a comparatively recent thing. Not that long ago, a song being heard on the radio, the only way to really listen to it without buying it, didn’t count at all. All that counted was physical sales.

Thanks for posting this video. I have had some knowledge about the Gold/Platinum process but I am always learning new things. I read somewhere that at one point the RIAA refused to award records with Platinum status that were released prior to 1976. Somewhere down the line that policy must have changed given how many platinum awards the Beatles have....thanks again!

Regarding around 4:50 in...John Densmore was looking at one of his Doors gold records and noticed that the bands didn't quite match up to the number of tracks, and one of the bands was not nearly wide enough to fit the entire song it allegedly contained! So he broke the record out of the frame and found that it was a flexi-disc. He put it on the turntable and heard Rod McKuen reciting poetry!

Why do they do that? Would it be really hard to use the artist's actual record? Rather than gold or platinum plating some other musician's record and then giving it as an award to some other artist! The whole thing just doesn't make sense!

I used to work in broadcasting, and most of the radio stations I worked at had many of them on the wall. Usually they’re given to influential stations that report their playlists to trade magazines that play the song early, before it becomes a hit.

Very interesting video. I was surprised to learn that metal mother discs were used for awards. But actually Gold Records awarded to artists prior to 1958 by the record companies themselves. This practice dates back to the 78 RPM era. You may want to do a follow-up video on this because it would explain the entire concept of Gold Records.

Did you have any speed issues with this the Fluance RT81 turntable? I have heard many people complain about having to adjust the speed with the adjustments on the bottom of the player. If so, once you adjust it, does it stay consistent at that speed or does it fluctuate, meaning you would have to adjust it frequently. Also how is the sound quality compared to the Audio-Technica LP120x-USB. Which would you recommend more? Thanks!
@danieldaniels7571
@danieldaniels7571 3 жыл бұрын
I recommend going with a vintage turntable made before 1988 that has adjustable pitch and a strobe. If you’re having speed issues you can see them, and easily correct them. If the speed is fluctuating after you adjust it, a little deoxit in the pitch adjustment pot will almost always fix it.

@mro4ts457

He already has a video on automatic changing record players i think. Essentially, back when they were printing side 1&4 on the same disc, and sides 2&4 on the other disc, they were making that album for people with an automatic cycling record player. These record players had a huge pin in the middle and a contraption/arm that held multiple records in the air above the turntable needle arm. One side of a record would play, the needle arm would move out of the way, then the next record in the stack would drop down to playing position, and the needle would swing back over to play that next record, so you didn’t have to get up to change the record. So, you would put the record with sides 2&3 on top of the record with sides 1&4. The lower record (with side one) would play first, then the player would drop the second record (with side two) and play that one second. Then you’d go over and flip both discs and set them ontop of eachother again, so the player would play side 3, then drop the disc with side 4 after. Essentially, with those automatic record players, it meant you could listen to sides 1&2 without having to getup. Then flip both discs at the same time, and listen to sides 3&4 without having to getup. Does that make sense by chance?

I saw a golden record once at a flea market, and though it was said to be genuine, it was destroyed and rotting. I mean it was from a famous hungarian artists who turned into an alcoholic, so it would make sense.

In my country, local gold and platinum discs, even back in time when they were barely relevant, were a total joke. The milestone to note was the quantity of albums delivered to stores, NOT the quantity of albums effectively sold to the public. Those quantities were derisory: “golden disc”, for example, were just 10,000 albums. And finally, after the award ceremony, all that gold and platinum-coated dudes almost always end its life abandoned at the record company’s cellars. My dad used to work some decades ago as security guard at the EMI branch. He told me all that.

I want to send you a record. However, I am having a hard time locating where I can get one mailer to send it. Any thoughts? I found them but in bulk.

I’m wondering when albums do go platinum or gold, do some musicians then release better pressed vinyl versions as well? Because I have the standard version of Folklore and it arrived in awful shape with scratches and dirt on it that won’t come off no matter how much I clean it. I’m looking for a better version but can’t find anything. And there’s no guarantee if I re buy the same standard version, it won’t be scratched as well.

Nope. And as to your issue with Folklore, it seems like vinyl quality control is at an all time low.

There was a guy on my local Craigslist selling a whole trove of genuine RIAA Gold records, which he inherited from his dad, who was a major record label exec. They were going for $200 each or $2000 for 20, and I really regret not buying one.
