Explainer Animation Made in Blender 3D

I made this explainer animation about one year ago. It's used to explain a process, and it's supporting equipment called pigging.
I modeled, animated and rendered in Blender 3D. Editing, compositing, effects and motion graphics I used Adobe After Effects.
While the animation isn't perfect ("tweaky" things I'd change as an artist, animator), it worked great for the client. Plus, this is a 5.5-minute animation, and I was a one man team on a tight budget and timeline! Add to that this was the first time I used Blender 3d minus a few tutorials online. Here are some of the details of what I did.
* I did not model everything (general list below), some models I had to purchase, or I brought in from the clients Solid Works.
* I modeled and/or remodeled or retopoed many of the objects. (Pig (red thing), ball port valves (in and out), pipes, 3-way valve, nuts, bolts, round rotating release and more)
* I did all of the textures, shading, and lighting
* Cinematography (camera, movement, focus, timing)
* Rigging (simple rig on the pig and shape keys)
* Animation (pig, fluid, camera, valves, knobs)
* Technical (path configuration and animation to move the pig, move the fluid with the pig, reverse the pig back to the start, all while staying in the pipe)
* Rendering Setup: This was a tough animation to render. It had many objects (faces), many materials, several lights, I used Cycles renderer, transparent objects, and changing depth-of-field. Some frames were going to take up to 18 minutes a frame. That wasn't going to work for timeline or budget. Therefore, I ended up baking the textures into the surrounding building. That took renders down to between 4 and 5 minutes per frame.
* Editing, compositing, effects and motion graphics I did in After Effects. I've used it for way too many years, since it came out, to also try to learn Blender's video sequencer and compositing. Time didn't allow.
Now to what I didn't do myself. This was just too big of a project to model every single object, so I purchased one tank, tanker truck, tote and surrounding building. I still had to texture and shade all of them. I did not have to change a few of the Solid Works objects: actuators, one of the tanks, and small valves (black ones with the knobs that turn) I still shaded and textured them. Music I bought online.
I rendered on both my machine and at Render Street. There was no way my one machine could render all scenes and still meet my deadline. Thank goodness for great and reasonably priced services like Render Street. render.st However, I was able to render a lot on my machine.
While this was a challenging and tedious project, I still loved doing it. I've been piddling with Blender off-and-on for a couple of years. Always starting over because I would let too much time lapse between tutorials. Therefore, I decided I'd get a project that someone other than me was dependent. That worked. I'm back at learning Blender in a more systematic way using Blender Cloud service. Check it out if you haven't. cloud.blender.org and CG Cookie is another great service too. cgcookie.com Of course, Blender Nation is an excellent source for Blender artists. I visit it all the time. www.blendernati.... Now I'm committed to that process. It will help me put together in a more fundamental way of what I hacked together with tuts from here-and-there.
I am working toward a personal project, so I needed to get more comfortable and efficient with Blender. This project certainly kicked that into high gear. The foundations and advanced learning support will help get me to that point very soon. My personal project will be character and story based, not an industrial explainer.
Enjoy. We'll it's not that exciting of an animation in itself, so how about observe instead? :)

Very cool Kevin. Awesome work! I guess nowadays you'd just do it in EVEE as for this type of client work it would have helped your timeframe, no fireflies, and is decent enough. Also love the money cannon at the end! 5:14. MONEYMONEYMONEY!

Not sure if it helps or if you already know, but you can clamp the direct and indirect light, the camera receives.. this could help with denoising.

Hi commenters and thank you for your comments. I’ll address a few in this one blanket comment. Fireflies - denoising filter was used but as you crank it up so goes up your render times. Render times were already getting way out of hand having transparent double thick glass and fluid reflecting textures that ran in a very long environment. This was done on a budget and a limited time frame. Some sacrifices had to be made and that was one of them. Additionally, I did a combination of ray traced rendering and baked in lighting. Valves rotating on wrong axis- yes some do but that was because of camera angle and the main purpose is to show what a pig does. The actuator got in the way of showing the function in some shots so it was decided to just move it rather than remove it. There was just no way to use fluid simulation for this project. Although I did do some test that looked really nice but again budget, timeframe and the “distance” the fluid would have to travel left it on the chopping block. The music was just something I bought, but don’t remember what it was called. This was four years ago. To animate the pig - that was complicated especially to have it reverse course to come back to the beginning. I created a path to model the pipe. I used that path to animate the pig along. I had more than one pig to accomplish this. One to animate coming in at the beginning. It is replaced by the one that is set to animate along the path. I do that by a one frame off screen jump and transparency 0% to 100% in one frame for the one on the path. To make the pig return I used a third pig that was set to the same path but gave a different starting point of the path which was the end. I had to hand animate several areas, especially the pipe bends. The blades of the pigs had modifiers that I used to creat blend shapes and then hand animated. At first I tried to use bones and that would have worked too but again for time constraints I went with blend shapes. Yes, this was done in Blender not 3D Studio Max. Compositing was done in Adobe After FX as well as the motion graphics. Some models were brought in from Solidworks. My biggest issue I had were that they came in tessellated instead of quads. Therefore, a lot of retopology had to be done for some objects. Some models were purchased, like the tanker at the end, I modeled several, and some were imported and retopoed. All lighting, surfacing, mapping, compositing, editing,and animation was done by me. This was all done by one person, me, not a team. That’s 5 and a half minutes of animation - a lot! I do subcontract/freelance work but that is not my full time job. I’d look at potential projects.

Regarding you resources, deadline and the fact that you were alone, animation is great. Now where you have more time you could re-render it in single PNG-frames and even with other render engines like Radeon pro render or Luxcorerender, if you desire. Advantage of rendering the animation into single PNG-frames is that you can abort and resume render process anytime

@porker5749
@porker5749 4 жыл бұрын
There is no "professional" version of Blender. There are different versions, all of which are free. I believe the most recent stable version is 2.8.1a. There are free add-ons that come bundled with it, that aren't enabled by default, there are also free add-ons and paid add-ons that you can down load from various sources. Do some googling and you'll find lots of information regarding Blender. (There are videos to show you how to enable and install the add-ons). I'm new to Blender myself and have found that the learning curve is steep to get good at it, but you can learn some basic 3D modeling fairly easily. FYI IMHO Creating what is shown in this video, is pretty advanced and is way beyond my skill set. It's not just a couple of clicks and bang it's done. This would take many hours to make unless you were really advanced at Blender.Hope this helps and happy Blendering!

I see a pump there. Why don't you just use the pump to continuously transfer the product all the way instead of using the pig each time? You now need an air compressor? I'm not fully understanding the process. Great modeling and animation though.
@KevinGrinder
@KevinGrinder 3 жыл бұрын
The pig is not used to move the fluids/product. The pig is used to “clean” the pipe so a different fluid can be used in the same pipe. Think of running red paint through and then needed to later run blue paint through.

Anoter way to achieve this is following this tutorial: www.cgtrader.com/tutorials/1669-how-to-repeat-an-object-along-a-path-in-blender. But use a cylinder instead of an arrow. Don't forget to add some loop cuts to the cylinder so that it can follow the path without any problem. Also, there's no need to use the array modifier in this case.

That is correct. The pig inside of the pipe was tricky. It follows the path that I used to create the pipes. But that didn't prove as easy as it sounds as timing and bends became an issue. Therefore, some hand animating was needed to correct those issues. The reverse action, pig coming back was even trickier. I had to split into another scene so that I could have the pig travel in reverse. Still hand animation was needed. I rigged the pig with bones so that I could get bends and I created shapes for the flanges of the pig so that I could animate them as well. Pipe being transparent I just used various settings for getting a nice transparent look. The key was that the pipe was "thick" meaning having faces in and out of the pipe not just a single polygon where you have a back and front.
