Minato was badass. He had Kurama's huge claw through his body and still had the strength to completely seal him into Naruto, not to mention accurately dividing the chakra in half while storing his and Kushina's chakra as well. I think it worked out better for him because youth was on his side, unlike with Hiruzen.

What seems to me is that Kishimoto did not know exactly how the power scaling worked back then and established Hiruzen as one of the most powerful characters (for a reason) at the time. And eventually just shook the whole power scaling so badly to introduce more and more exaggerated villains, until it all exploded in the unbeatable Madara who had to be defeated via plot shield/protagonism. Back in the day this was quite the goddamn fight, since it was not only the sheer strenght of both contenders, the amusement of strong jutsus being used, but also the outsmarting of the opponent. The protagonists being weaker gave us a bigger amusement too as we could compare the monument to human scale and it was quite big.

The third hokage really died in vein because orchimura still survied got his hands back and as it seems he is on his quest to immortality

I think a loophole in the reaper would be to activate it with a shadow clone. Cause if you notice when Hiruzen fought Orochimaru and his clones sealed the 1st and 2nd hokage, the reaper seal didn’t appear on Hiruzen’s real body it went on the clones body.

wasn't it mentioned at some point in Boruto that the Grim Reaper supposedly came from another dimension like how we saw in the Nue arc? I really wish that the Death jutsu like this stayed extremely rare and extremely powerful in return. In Boruto, as of now, there were three diffirent death jutsu shown and all were extremely weak for the price of your life.

The Rinnegan, which governs and gives access to the powers of the six paths and essentially allowed Hagoromo to transcend death as a wandering spirit, and the fact that the Uzumaki clan is also related to Hagoromo may be the reason why the Uzumaki clan was able to develop the jutsu to control the shinigami.

So I feel it would be safe to say that releasing souls from the reaper is technically impossible, unless you're immortal or you have significant regeneration.

Ya know now knowing about the karma seal and how it functions, it might be similar to the markings on the shinigami's arm while drawing out souls. It is possible that is how the Ososuki actually attained godlike powers by mimicking the source of power that the gods of the universe are using Edit: now that I know that the karma seal is used to resurect the original user it is even more likely that it was somehow copied from the shinigami. Here’s my theory on how the technique works....I believe the Jutsu seals you away inside the belly of the shinigami instead of killing the user....Once the seals are performed the demon appears and pulls your soul. The saying “A soul for a soul” is a good reference. For example when Hiruzen used it he was already completely drained of chakra which would’ve killed him due to old age and plus he was mortally wounded by Orochimaru. Now for minato he used the technique before being stabbed by the nine tails. If he didn’t get stabbed then he would’ve still been alive but only sealed away for life unless someone reverse the seal like orochimaru did. Now your probably wondering what happens to the body after your sealed the body is no longer in use and it would simply decay away. The soul is still alive but the body isn’t active. It’s like a dead phone. Now your probably also asking ok what would happen if the seal is broken and his soul isn’t dead. Then you would use a white Zetsu body so the soul can have a host and minato would be back alive again. Which could mean that Uzumaki clan members that used are probably not dead they’re just fighting forever inside the shinigami. Now what happens if there are no zetsu bodies. Well the soul would simply fly to the pure land. So in conclusion the seal doesn’t kill it just taps you away forever unless someone performs the reverse reaper death seal.

I think it's implied that the user of the reaper dearh seal is constantly fighting the one they sealed, so I believe that Hiruzen is just constantly attacking Orochimaru's arms 24/7 and that's what's causing the pain

It is used three times in the series: 1st Minato seals the Nine tails inside him and Naruto, 2nd Hiruzen used it to seal away Orochimaru's chakra, and 3rd Orochimaru summoned him to release the four Hokage.
