Your missing something

They are suuuuper similar. Transforming begins with fader closed. When you push the fader open and closed (1 click), you get just one sound. A flare begins with fader *open*--pushing the fader closed and back open quickly in the middle of the sound (1 click) will produce two dounds. By starting w/an open fader, you get more sounds than you would with the same number of transforming clicks. This revolutionized scratching in the 1990s. (My flare scratches are still slow.) Respect from Chicago!

Yes it was and also the crossfader was one of the best. Only got to scratch with one a couple of times back in the day.

when you delay or offset flare techniques (like 2 or 3 click orbits, OG & Crescent flares ) by one phrase they can become closed timing when done in sections, but the open ends can still be heard when the pattern is rocked continuously. The boomerang scratch is another great example, I remember the q bert instructional teaching the open timing phrasing and most of the early internet videos being taught in the closed phrasing, but it's the same scratch pattern.

of course it has 4 sounds, you cut a baby scratch in half twice
