In this video, Exploratorium Senior Scientist Paul Doherty explains why we don't have a total solar eclipse every month. A total solar eclipse happens when the moon crosses between the sun and Earth and casts its shadow onto our planet. But the orbit of the moon is tilted relative to the orbit of the Earth around the sun, so the moon often passes below or above Earth. At those times, it does not cross the line between the sun and the Earth, and therefore does not create a solar eclipse. There are just two times a year in the Earth's orbit when there is a possibility of a total solar eclipse.
Tune in on March 8th at 5:00 p.m. PST to watch a live broadcast of a total solar eclipse! www.exploratorium.edu/eclipse/

Why not go a little further and explain exactly what circumstances are required for an actual eclipse when obviously they don't occur every 6 months.🤔

one thing is... an eclipse happens once every 18 months(about) or 2 times every three years(about) and he makes it seam as if its once every 6 months. think about it, would solar eclipses be so rare and exciting if they were that common? other than that the video was great and probably the best on youtube, so double 👍
@Perivale
@Perivale 4 жыл бұрын
@ani He said they were rare, and never said they happen every six months. What he did say however, is when an eclipse does take place, six months later there will be another one.

Ani Sieler, I have the same question as you. The video seems to say solar and lunar eclipses happen twice each year. Taking into account that the earth rotates around the sun once every 365.25 days and the moon rotates around the earth once every 27 days. Then we should have total solar and lunar eclipses happen once every 18 months. However, that is also not true. www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/total-lunar-eclipse.html "a total lunar eclipse can be seen from any given location every 2.5 years." I am guessing that it is because of the apsidal precession of the moon every 8.85 years. Can anyone explain further?

So chances are that the orbits were probably in the same plane quite recently and was thrown out in the last 5000-12,000 years. Why else would there be such hoopla about them if they were as rare then as they are now ?

Y’all notice how he keeps the moon in the same position as he walks around (thought the moon rotated around the earth every month) until he says now it’s time for the eclipses. Even with the tilt if the moon goes around the earth at some point every month there should be an eclipse seen from some part of the earth!!!

Ahh, so the Orbit of the Moon does not precess relative to the Sun, it has a fixed inclined plane, but its shadow only hits Earth at certain points in Earth's orbit.

Is that all you can say? Did you not think it might be helpful to have offered your own alternative explanation as to why a solar eclipse occurs so infrequently? Perhaps too, you're one of these deluded fools that actually thinks the moon creates its own light?

So the moon does not go around the earth in a certain orbit..it wobbles up and down..well i guess its a "scientific explanation"..lol bright sun and during the day we can see the moon but no shadow..but we have sunlight with no sun in the sky ..but science will straighten my ass out ...i know
