Hudson seems like one of those musicians like Monk or Sun Ra or Wayne Shorter who just exists on some extra dimensional plane where music is their first language.

Just saw Garth last night at the Midnight Ramble at Levon Helm Studio. He absolutely blew me away. Some of the best playing I've ever heard. Heartfelt, erratic, sweet, and melodic all rolled into one. I'm so glad I got to experience seeing him play. Please live forever, Garth!

He may just do that.

Garth's verbal communication is on another level entirely, just like his amazing musical abilities... and that's just fine by me!

Great interview! love the idea of notes as numbers. Love Garth's special style.

Genius. We love ya, Garth!

The way he talks reminds me of my father, brilliant people don't think they need to explain some things, because everyone should understand what they are saying.

Those guys since 60s l loved 74yrs old now from Toronto miss Robbie and Richard turning the cigarette machine upside down to get a package out..ha,ha,RI.P...always LARRY

According to a video clip from The Last Waltz, it was Rick Danko that turned the machine upside down. They others were taking food items (polite way of saying stealing), they were playing in a club where the owner didn't want to pay them until the end of their gig, which is not what he had promised them.

Garth sounds like he's a music historian. I've noticed a lot of great musicians are.

Such a baller. Robbie may have written the songs and Levon may have kept the groove but Garth made the Band the Band.

All true, but all of them make the Band. Rick and Richards voices, for example.

@@rob8872 Garth Hudson A remarkable man of immense talent & musical genius.

@@rob8872 Without Robbie’s songs, they wouldn’t be The Band, without any one of the others’ virtuosity in arranging and performing them, they wouldn’t be the Band. Three of the most soulful voices ever to sing R&R were in the same band at the same time. Blows me away, every time

If you really pay attention and listen to how he explains the process of ear-training, listening to radio's, key notes, assigning numbers, you can get about 4 years of music school for free in about fifteen seconds. But it'll take you a lot longer to master it, took Schoenberg a while.

Garth is clearly the real deal.

He’s not nuts. When he talks about the number 5 corresponding to the first note of Blue Moon, he’s correct. The chorus starts on the fifth relative to the root note (e.g., in the key of G, the first note of the chorus would be a D).

Garth is probably the most talented musically brilliant keyboard player ever. In The Band he was unrivaled as to talent. But he is flat-out nuts.

Does anyone know the story about the talents in the Old Testament Garth is referring to?

Just because he's got a smile and nice clothes and works for the media doesn't make him fake... everyone, no matter how they look, deserves a chance before you judge them. Yes, your first impression may be that he's fake, and that's OK. But if you actually did some research to know what you're talking about, you would know that Jeff Woods has a greater understanding and love of rock (and music) than probably you do.

I'm trying to be kind here, but the interviewer must have majored in Kazoo or tamborine. I was half-expecting him to say "Doraymee" is that Eskimo for piano ? Or, "Garth, I noticed you moving your fingers around and pressing on square thingies. How important is that to you in playing these drums ?"
@Richard_Garner13 жыл бұрын
well, to the guy above... the interviewer in this video is anything but fake. Jeff Woods has a deep love and understanding of rock music, as well as an encyclopedic knowledge of the topic.
