[ ] Vin plate - check if nuts on the plate. It must not be displaced from its original position. [ ] Check wear and tear of pedal - within 50k there won't be any wear and tear [ ] Pedals should not be very new [ ] Check the ratio, number of years vs running kms - it should be balanced. [ ] Talk to owner , what is does, who used to drive this car [ ] Check for chasis number [ ] Open the bonnet [ ] check chabi pane marks anywhere. [ ] See if you see any paint mark, or any bend , any welding . [ ] Remove the rubber (make sure to check if air bag are not there) and inspect for any welding, or re paint [ ] Sealant [ ] On door panels [ ] Check for sealant on the bonnet [ ] On bonnet [ ] Inside engine bay [ ] Open the door [ ] Check for bolts on hinges, there should not be any marks- if not, it mean doors were opened [ ] Engine (diesel) [ ] Switch on the car, let it run for 5 minutes [ ] Take out the engine oil dip stick [ ] See if the engine is not releasing oil droplets or smoke [ ] For European cars , it's normal [ ] Now accelerate (Rev only for 2k rpm for 15 sec) and see if that smoke is increasing and oils leaks is also increasing - back compression, meaning your engine is really weak [ ] Check for unnecessary sounds like clattering , near injectors (only for diseal not petrol) [ ] Tyres [ ] Check for the year of manufacturing (see if has changed) [ ] Tyre generally last for 40k [ ] Check for marks (year of make) on the glasses (all) [ ] They all should be same [ ] Check for under body rust

What Namit bhaiya mentioned about re-touching of the car, if got a small scratch, happened with me. The dealer re-painted the door and gave me in writing that it was done when taking the delivery as it scratched due to his fault. One small correction in terminology - it is called engine overrun and not overrace. It is occurs when the fuel/air mixture in the cylinders ignites without a spark. This is known as the dieselling effect because it is caused by the fuel igniting spontaneously in the combustion chambers, which is what occurs (deliberately) in a diesel engine.
