Clyde Football Club have been nomadic for a number of years. Originally from Glasgow, they played for 88 years at Shawfield Stadium.
Shawfield is now sadly abandoned.
Since moving out in the mid 1980s, they shared with Hamilton Accies & Partick Thistle before moving into Broadwood Stadium in Cumbernauld. Now they've left Cumbernauld and they're back in Hamilton!
What next for this historic, old club?!

There’s plenty of other clubs in lower leagues that could use places like this. Kinda like San Siro but for non-league teams. It’s a shame to let waste ground just sit there without purpose. Especially when there’s so much history at these locations.

Hi Ross, do you know who owns Shawfield these days ? It would be great if someone could buy the ground and either restore it or rebuild it. A football club should be based in its local area for the local population. All the best to you and "The Bully Wee", from a Womble.

@@pauldear6660 Clyde would love to be back at Shawfield. Realistically getting back to Glasgow should help. I said to Sam off camera that Clyde should probably have moved to East Kilbride in the 1970s when the tenements in Bridgeton and Oatlands were demolished. Hindsight is always 20/20 and that opportunity has long gone

Thanks for your replies Ross. If I had the money i'd buy Shawfield for the Clyde fans. Unfortunately, I am just a normal working class man. Stories like this make me feel sad. One former player who appeared at Shawfield who is definitely worth mentioning is ... Pat Nevin 👍 He started his football career at Clyde, was there 1981-83. Then was signed, aged 19, by Chelsea Football Club. Signed by John Neal, one of our greatest ever managers ... Nevin went on to play for Everton. And Scotland.

Check out two grounds in Accrington, Lancashire. Accrington FC played in the original English Football League from 1888 - 1892 in the top tier of English football and played at the home of the current Accrington Cricket Club. The newly formed Accrington Stanley 1891 - 1966 played at Peel Park (around the corner from Stanley Street where the club was founded at a working mans clubs on that street), around a quarter to half a mile from the original ground in the second/third tier. The latter still has small banks that show the history of the original ground. My son played his home games at Peel Park and though I am not from Accrington (lived their for a few years) it felt pretty special watching him play on a pitch that held so much history.

Hi Sam, Great channel which I watch regularly. I was very surprised to watch this one about Clyde and Shawfield. I have some excellent photos from 1949 to 1952 when my dad was playing for Clyde. I have photos of my dad playing against Rangers, Celtic and all the clubs in the top flight. My favourite photo is of my dad defending his goal against Celtic in the Glasgow Cup final at Hampden. Clyde won 2-1, the attendance was 109,000. So for my dads involvement I always have a soft spot for Clyde and follow their results. It’s very emotional seeing inside the old stadium where my dad played. Keep going Sam, your vlogs are always interesting. Ian Lindsay.

I used to go to the Shawfield dogs for a night out, but even 20 years ago, the stadium was falling apart..... which was a shame as the art deco architecture was striking and wouldve been worth preserving. So much sporting history will be lost when Shawfield is knocked down for housing :( As a side, I recently rehomed a retired greyhound, and would recommend the breed as a pet to anyone - The Greyhound Trust do an awesome job helping to rehome retired racers.

In season 1966-67 when Celtic and Rangers were two the best teams in Europe (Celtic won the European Cup and Rangers reached the final of the Cup-Winners Cup) they finished first and second in Scottish League Division 1 respectively; Clyde were third. Clyde were denied the chance to play in Europe in the Inter Cities Fairs Cup because Rangers were already in that competition and only one team from an individual city was allowed. I grew up less than a mile from Shawfield, and growing up as a Gorbals boy, I spent alot of time there, so it's really sad to see part of my childhood, basically destroyed. Being a Rangers fan, I used to go to Ibrox with my dad for most home games, but if my dad was working away, or Rangers where playing away, my uncle Jim who was a big Clyde fan, would take me to Shawfield. I think it's just as well, my uncle Jim is now dead, because seeing his beloved Shawfield, in that state, would have killed him. Then every Saturday night, if my dad was home, was a family night out, when we would all go along to Shawfield, "fur the dugs". Sad to see the state the old ground has fallen into, but it still gives me many, many, many happy memories.

Fascinating clip. Two things I used to do at Shawfield in the late 70s - help sell the programmes and wait for players' autographs in the corridor outside the dressing rooms that led from the players' tunnel (for games against the Old Firm they used to up the security otherwise they did let you hang about in the corridor). Hopefully Clyde can return to the South Side of Glasgow sometime soon.

The owner of Shawfield Billy King (bookie) died last October. Covid finished the dog racing off. In the 2 years before that, there were anti-dog racing protesters at the gates every night racing was on in all weathers. Whether the protests were justified or not I don't know. Billy King kept the stadium open but never really spent any money on it hence it looks virtually the same as it did in the 70s. There's now no dog racing left in Scotland. The nearest track now from Shawfield is Newcastle. Now that Billy King is dead, it's inevitable the stadium will be demolished, most probably houses will be built there. I remember being at the old Airdrie stadium in Coatbridge at the last game before everyone chipped in to destroy it. I even got a piece of the turf and put it in the garden at home. I can still remember the guys bouncing on the goalposts.

My first ever job was at the greyhounds just 10 years ago. Even then the place was falling to pieces. The owners haven’t gave a damn about the facility for many decades.

Was in Glasgow on a footy trip the other week and went for run along banks of Clyde. On the opposite side to Shawfield there is some stones which I could just about read in reference to Football. Would this be the site of the original ground ?

Sucha a shame. Sad that the former owner died, but his riches were barely invested in the ld ground. Any fans od scottish football or Glasgow architecture in general, should visit the stadium befor eit's too late. It'll be unimaginative an housing scheme before long. Nicer area that Parkhead and easily gobbled up by developers.

Wonderful video but I felt very sad after seeing this. Another in the long line of great stadiums no longer in use or simply consigned to history. I don't know the history of Clyde FC but it seems very similar to many of the smaller clubs in England who struggle year by year just to keep afloat. Is there no way the ground can be renevated with the joint effort of the fans and the local council as it would be a travesty if yet another bit of Glasgow history went.

I pass this ground going to work and then coming home. I believe the plan is houses. It's just a pity it can't be saved. It's a large ground and does look nice inside. I'm not a Clyde fan but I have always wanted to see inside the stadium.
