The lovely Julia and I are 'Up North' as they say, in delightful Cumbria. The landscape is stunning and the legends enticing.
Today we meet up with Rober Croser, local man and regular viewer/supporter of the channel, who takes us to the tint village of Croglin. We are in search of the vampire that inspired Bram Stoker to write his famous masterpiece. Joins us, if you dare!
You maybe interested to read an email I received after the video went live:
Dear Richard,
I happened to be in Croglin the day you visited as my mother lives opposite the Church and I saw you filming and therefore was interested in looking up what you do. I have just watched what you learned about the Croglin Vampire and must take issue with some of the information you were given and presented. The house you showed as Croglin Hall is in fact my late Uncle’s house The Old Pele and previously known as The Rectory. It is not the Croglin Hall depicted in the legend - this is Croglin Low Hall some 2 miles away and at one time called Croglin Grange - there is also some dispute as to whether Croglin Church was where the “Vampire” resided as there was originally a Chapel at Croglin Grange.
The fallen tree you mentioned was a large yew tree which came down in a storm some years ago and as far as I know was never mentioned in the legend.
The full details of the legend and how it is disputed can be found on historic mysteries.com
I don’t intend to be a killjoy with this but inevitably Croglin gets a fair few of “Vampire Hunters” and it would not be right if anyone decided to get a closer look at The Old Pele as they already do with the Church. Some of these visitors are not as careful as you were in the Church Yard and like to come late at night. As you saw there are often sheep in there to keep the grass down and they should not be disturbed either.
I would hope that you will address this on your website.
Yours sincerely,
MS

Hello Richard! Just wanted to post something as I never do, I'm 21 and live in Horsham and stumbled across your KZfaq channel on your Horsham video last year. I just wanted to say I really do love your videos, I watch the ones when I can but it's just nice and relaxing in the evening, you have given me loads of inspiration of walks and places to go in West Sussex places I never even herd of ! It's nice to take my girlfriend on some of these walks on my days off and tell her all these facts and pretend i know everything when really I'm repeating what you said 😂 anyways keep doing what you are doing I wish you and your channel all the best and I'll continue to keep liking and following you for more amazing adventures. Thank you for being such a lovley plesant genuine guy and having such a great community! - Matt

I used to visit Croglin mainly back in the late 1980s. I always wondered if that was the crypt in the story. There was a strange vibe in the village. Crows nailed upside down along the fence on the way into the village and a large cross in the garden of the house opposite the church. Also locals were not that friendly maybe because they fed up of people visiting. There always used to be a pub called the Robin Hood Inn that was never open i always thought if it was open entering it would be like The Slaughtered Lamb in the movie An American Werewolf in London haha.

Just South of Croglin is Scarrowmanwick! The Bogut is another creature which roames the area. I lived at Holly Bank View Renwick nearby which was a pub in the 18th and 19th centuries during railway building time. I could smell beer in the night! Very spooky!.Croglin Water has a waterfall which has a wonderfull rainbow to the East at sunset!.....Me 77 Ex RN LA5 9RA UK

I first heard of this when I was at school in the early 80's, it was in a little paperback book called "Headliners" I think. It also had the story of the money pit on Oak Island. Fantastic video, bought back all those memories 👍👍

There used to be some sweets in the 70's / 80's called Mummies, on the inside of the wrapper was a random "Tales From The Crypt" story (there were 10 or 12 in total i think), one of which I remember was the Croglin Vampire story. First time i'd heard of it.

Just a thought… if this story was true and vampires do exist, then the girl who was attacked would have turned. No one ever goes down that rabbit hole. I have visited Croglin many times mainly back in the late 1980s and there was a definite vibe in the village. Crows nailed upside down on the fence along the road entering the village and a large cross in the garden opposite the church

Great story and a quick "Google" produced this creepy fact: "Holly branches have long been used to decorate homes in winter. The tree was seen as a fertility symbol and a charm against witches, goblins and the devil. It was thought to be unlucky to cut down a holly tree."
@RichardVobes
@RichardVobes 5 жыл бұрын
Oh dear, they shouldn't have cut down the holly tree! - Thanks Sid.
@JuliaHartley
@JuliaHartley 5 жыл бұрын
This is in part why I bring holly in for winter although, technically I could be deemed a witch so obviously it doesn't work for this hehe. I think folk tend to villify others all through history, particularly when they don't understand them and basic theory for the holly is to ward off evil, not specific types of people. Great comment Sid, thanks!

Too many stories out there to be written off and with a couple of my own experiences all I can say in regards to the Supernatural or Paranormal is If one exists why not others? Think about all the history we lost to Wars, Natural Disasters, or the civilizations lack of Record keeping. Absolutely nothing today is the same as it was 6000 years ago let alone 60 Million years ago when Dinosaurs were around. And yet in all that time there are people around the world who have seen these things and in some cases have even been victim to these things. But that's only taking in the Missing 411 cases that don't involve Serial killers.
