Someone commented about wartime mentality, and turning your garden over to growing food. If you are buying seeds, make sure you buy the right types of seeds!!! A lot of the seeds that you can purchase from shops, garden centres etc, come from the big seed houses. Many of the varieties are shown as "F1" hybrids, and what this means is, that they are the first generation cross between two parent plants, and would have been selected because of certain qualities. Under normal circumstances, these would be fine to grow, however, if things went sideways, they would not be a good choice. Under those circumstances, you would need to be able to save seeds from what you are growing, to be able to use for the future. F1 hybrid seeds will not come "true to type", because they are a hybrid seed, and if you save them, it's the luck of the draw, so, you want to be buying heritage, or heirloom varieties. These will come true to type. Some seeds are easier to save than other's, for example peas, beans, tomatoes, these are fairly straight forward, some are slightly more complicated, because they might cross with other varieties easier. I normally buy my seeds from "The Real Seed Catalogue" based in Wales, they have a brilliant website with lots of information, and there are a couple of good books on their site that you can buy, that are really worth having. The other issue we've had, is that the past two years has seen wet autumns, and springs, our garden was under water for about 3 months this year, so try and make provision for somewhere raised, where you can grow, possibly in containers. I've previously purchased large pots and other things from "Oaklands Gardens", they are quite reasonably priced, and if you go onto their mailing list, you can get an extra 5% off. If you can, get a compost heap going, go and watch a few videos of how to do it. It takes time to get into a flow, and get the garden productive, and this year has been particularly challenging because of the weather, but there is still time to get some things started. Also take a look at "The Growing Network" TGN, they have a facebook page, the emphasis being "bring what you can, take what you need", and it is bringing communities together, and sharing surplus, and is completely free. There are about 6 groups now, and we've just started one in our town, and it is really taking off. If things get bad, we are going to need these kinds of groups, and it's great seeing people having a coffee, and sitting around talking and making new friends, we need more of this! Hmmm. Interesting. I did this 37 years ago: gave up the “convenience “ of urban living and went to remote/rural place. Have always had a food garden, and foraged, have always traded what I had lots of for food I needed. Always worked part time AND at home, did without but have a lot. Not completely self sufficient but can easily cope. Neighbours are independent but always help each other, when required. Just living a life and lucky to do so.🇨🇦

TB tests on cows? You know, my grandfather had a farm years ago in Wisconsin, and as a child, spent my summers there. I never saw tests done or vaccinations on the herd. Occasionally, we would give a cow and antibiotic, because it had mastitis, or something else, which was rare. The vet would tell how to dispense the antibiotic and that was that. If the cow was given an antibiotic, it was not pour in the tank. It was given to the calves.

Richard I am sure the fresh cows milk has been grand but if you hvae been ill with a cough or a cold Dairy is a challenge for people to digest and Dairy is inflmmatory to sinuses and causes Mucus over production. Better to drink hot water with Tumeric powder with fresh cracked black pepper to cure your voice. Chicken veggie soup and fresh minced Garlic left out for 15 minutes then added to fresh lemon juice with tbsp of oilve oil ! Give all Dairy a break till you are 100 %. Better to sip chicken vegetable broth. Oregano Capsules , NAC, Quercitin with Bromilian and Colidial Silver liquid 10 ppm or stronger Tbsp morning and evening. .
