From a young age I listened to squirrels, I learned to copy it by putting my two front teeth on my bottom lip and inhaling strongly. They would make sound back at me while looking at me. I thought it was cute. I experimented and eventually learned if I did the same thing slowly and inhaled slowly they reacted more friendly. Eventually I did it enough where they stopped running away and eventually they would run up to me and communicate, then I figured out doing slow sounds the same way. They would run up on my shoulder. I have no idea what I was saying but I tried to project love. It worked. My friends used to call me the squirrel whisperer. I did all this without feeding them, but then I started to, and continued to speak to them. Wonderful thing is, I only fed them after they were comfortable towards me

You know how certain sounds give you the chills and make your neck hair rise up? Or how some sounds make you feel good, others make you feel scared.... I think this is basically the way animals communicate. There is no logic behind their sounds that they first have to learn how to interpret. I think they know what those sounds mean bc they evoke an inate reaction in them. My mom used to tell me that when she was pregnant with me the sounds of some toys my sister had would make her gag. Not the smells, the sounds !! I think it's the same exact system with animals. We are the only ones with words that need to be deciphered. That's why I think we wont ever be able to understand animals. Their language - imo - is way more complex, if it actually works the way I think it does

Dogs and cats communicate with us all of the time, it's us humans who miss the message. It's kinda silly for humans to still largely assume that all communication is verbal or auditory given even humans use sign language and nonverbals.

I took an environmental ethics class a couple years ago and it was really eye opening for me. The most interesting thing to me was the idea of anthropocentrism which you kind of explained in this video. Its basically the idea that only humans possess intrinsic value, and the western world is dominated by it. The entire idea of anthropomorphism is also heavily reliant on an anthropocentric ideology because it essentially says that wants and emotions and even higher thinking to some degree are exclusive to humans. I personally believe we have no valid reason to think this way, as one of the main arguments for it is we cannot experience what other animals do so we have no reason to believe they have a similar experience, but we also cannot experience another humans life, yet (most) people would agree they are sentient like themselves because we communicate through our own languages. Its very exciting to see these advancements in communication with other animals because like you said it could hopefully lead to a complete paradigm shift and the way we treat our fellow organisms. Anyway sorry for the mini essay lol i just genuinely find this topic super fascinating and love hearing others takes on it!

I always felt like animals are like Pokémon, we just understand what they are communicating even if they don’t speak out language especially my Labrador I can tell what she want by her barks or eyes it’s crazy. As someone who loves animals I agree we must protect them and their ecosystem it’s not just our world it’s for all of us.

Yesterday my puppy was chilling in my living room while was watching movies. Not the first experience. But the first with him. He started moaning and chirping. I thought he was talking coz we recently came back from holiday and left him alone. Next thing he starts vomiting in the silent luckily we noticed and took care of it. But his signs were weird yesterday . I could communicate to my 14year old Staffordshire talk to him like a human. Died 2021 his wife still with us shes 11 years old and we got the new rottweiler mix boerboel puppy but after a year he's already standing over her

There is also the complexity of short and long term memory and the lack there of in animals right? And what about the perception of time? Even if we could understand the language of animals, that is just one piece in the giant puzzle of communication with animals. And speaking of communication with animals, I swear my little papillon knows how to communicate with me through the way he blinks his eyes while we’re staring at each other. A slow blink means yes and to rapid blinks means no. His eyes are a beautiful green color and when he stares into my eyes it truly feels like he’s looking into my soul. He is such a unique, precious and adorable little K9

Look how long it took to “abolish” slavery, I put it in “” because it still exists in many parts of the world and also has taken shape in different forms. Animals would have a HUGE nearly insurmountable obstacle to overcome if we could readily speak with them.

You speak about animal "sentience" but all the animals shown are known to be sentient... they feel pain. The ability to think like us and feel emotions and such is known as Sapience, which is a step above sentience.

A few random notes alongside the video from a random dog trainer who loves behavior. Chaser is a well-documented dog that can recall the names of over 1000 objects. Dog’s best “sense” is their nose. To compare their strengths, I once heard a great analogy using vision, our greatest sense. What we would see clearly at 1/3 of a mile, they would see just as clearly at over 3000 miles. They smell in parts be million (arguably up to trillion). This is also the reason it’s important to let them use their nose when you can. It’s the best source of stimulation they will ever get! We can communicate with dogs. We understand the function of many of their behaviors. This is the study of Ethology (my foundation). Learning these foundations can skyrocket your communication and quality of life with your furry friend. You noticed I mentioned “function”, not purpose. This is because we understand in which it’s contexts different behaviors are displayed. The purpose is subjective and therefore unverifiable. By observing their many body language signals and vocalizations we can better understand them. Leading to more win-win experiences together. MORE BELOW
@Ben_Neill
@Ben_Neill 5 ай бұрын
He mentions “understanding” your dog in the clip at 4:23. Ironically, what you see is an anxious or insecure dog. The flattened forehead, retracted and downward ears, and (very clearly) a lip lick - another known sign of insecurity. If this dog is very understanding or has a good bond with this person, they are most likely ok. But at some point, or with the wrong person, that is EXACTLY how people get “bit out of nowhere” or when “only” ”trying to give them a hug/kiss”. The soundboards are a great marketing tactic. It comes down to it being a simple sound = outcome. This pairing over time is the conditioning process itself. There are many similarities between mammals such as humans, dogs, elephants, and more. But understanding where these similarities and differences lie is what matters most. Promoting sound education maximizes the animal’s welfare. If you’re ever looking for assistance with your animal, do your research. Choose those who have been educated from known sources. Choose ones who place the welfare and well-being of your animal above acquiring an outcome. “Be a friend. Not an owner.”

Awesome video - thank you! You're right about people talking a lot about anthropomorphism (especially when they want to rationalize doing horrible things to non human animals), but would you consider doing a video that dives deeper into what anthropomorphism actually is? Sure, it's assigning uniquely human characteristics to non human beings, but what are those "uniquely human characteristics" anyway? Are there any at all? Do we know FOR A FACT there are any thoughts, behaviors, etc. that only humans display? Thanks for considering. -J

I am pretty sure I can communicate with cats, not really as with humans, but I teach them to understand short phrases like "food time!", "follow me", "no, don't do that", "you want me to pet you?"... but it's not foolproof of course. We are different beings, and I respect animals quite a lot. I don't think any living being deserves to be killed in ways that humans kill animals, inhumanely and especially in those horrible "meat factories", so called "meat farms". That should be banned. We don't need that much meat at all, and at least 80% is just wasted.
