2 commentaries that I wish to share: -Portugal as a country, and Portuguese culture, history, landscapes, beaches or countryside, cities or the people, food or wine, Portuguese language, etc are underrated comparing with Italy or Spain in a unfair way. Maybe Hollywood has also a role in this... -The Guimarães área/ or Porto area and 100Km around has 90 % of the português textile industry, that is one of the most important textiles industry in Europe. Why in The North, mainly because of 4 reasons: - Labour reasons , The amount/density of population that was able to work on factories. -Walter/rivers, since Textiles needs dyeing houses, and dyeing houses need water a lot of water, the north has much more acess to water then other parts of Portugal. - The proximity of sea port of Leixões/Porto, Porto airport, Spain, Rail train capacity for exporting goods. - Historical reasons, the English from Manchester the were more present in Porto then in Lisbon, establish the first textiles units in the North of Portugal in the XIX and the Germans in the XX century, specially on spinning mills and later in technical textiles. Great video guys!!

I’m always fascinated by palaces and castles in Portugal because most of them are over 1200 years old and they did not have hydroelectric machinery to carry boulders up the mountains which is where most castles are built.... it’s fascinating how those men from centuries ago developed methods of carrying boulders way up tall mountains!!! And all castles are made of stone!

It's a nature reserve with a few small and old villages full of history. It's not far from where you are at the moment (like 50km away from Porto) I'm from Ermelo a little village in the Serra do Alvão and you guys could visit the Fisgas de Ermelo or the piocas de Ermelo, the nature there is very beautiful and the Fisgas are well known and famous in the northern of Portugal. 2 commentaries that I wish to share: -Portugal as a country, and the Portuguese culture, history, landscapes, beaches or countryside, cities or the people, food or wine, are underrated comparing with Italy or Spain in a unfair way. Hollywood has also part of the responsibility in this. Eg: please google the Battle of Diu. For sure you never hear about it. It was one of the most epic and dramatic battles in world history. A battle and a drama of a father that revenged his son. Let me ask you how many movies about small English battles or Vietnam vs Us Batlles or Iraq invasion wars have Hollywood shown us since the begging of XX Eg2: The dramatic and tragedy love of Pedro and Inês ( True story between the Portuguese king Pedro and his assassinated lover and queen after dead Inês in XIV century) do you something about? How many movies do have seen about Romeu and Juliet? Masterpiece from Shakespeare for sure...but Pedro and Ines has all the items of a masterpiece and it’s a real story from History...goggle it... Let’s change this!!! -The Guimarães área/ or Porto area and 100Km around has 90 % of the português textile industry, that is one of the most important textiles industry in Europe. Why in The North? Mainly because of 4 reasons: - Labour reasons , The amount/density of population that was able to work on factories. -Water/rivers, since Textiles needs dyeing houses, and dyeing houses need water a lot of water, the north has much more acess to water then other parts of Portugal.

To the question "how did this boulder get here?", the answer is usually pretty straightforward, especially when they are rounded like those: glaciers. They covered the whole of the Northern Iberian Peninsula and parts of the south as well, and did move a whole lot of stuff around, depositing it in the weirdest places.

In the 1990's most of the industries around Lisbon were closed, mostly moving to China and to the Eastern countries arriving back then to EU. Lisbon and Setúbal had 7 factories of automobiles and now only have VW in Palmela. 7 factories of office furniture, now none. One factory of trains, now none. Shipyard Lisnave in Cacilhas closed, the steel industry closed, etc, etc, etc... Fortunately it was not so bad in the North. Also many companies of furniture concentrated their production around Águeda, Paços de Ferreira, etc, because it's easier and cheaper to make it close to common suppliers of wood, screws and other hardware, etc.

The Northern Portuguese are more enterprising, we have a tradition of hard work up here in the North. There's an old Portuguese saying that Money is made in the North and spent in the South. Around Porto and further North we have one of the largest manufacturing hubs for textile (Vale do Ave), furniture (Paços de Ferreira) and leather goods (especially shoes São João da Madeira)). Portugal is the second largest exporter of high end shoes in Europe, all produced in the North. By the way if you're ever in Porto be sure to visit Matosinhos where you'll find more than 50 seafood restaurants, you'll be able to taste some of the best seafood in Europe!

The difference between the North and the South is simple: The South of Portugal has always had good agricultural land that the North did not have. The North had only stone and emigration. So the factories were all installed in the North and made the North richer and the South continues to have the largest agricultural production.
@JP-vz2iy
@JP-vz2iy 4 жыл бұрын
Actually your comment about agriculture in north of Portugal is not true. Clearly u don´t know the north of Portugal or what your are talking about. Water in the north makes farmland much more fertile than in the south, which makes agriculture in the south very centralized in few products. This can also be seen in the typical cuisine of the southern regions. So the best farmland is in north because of the water. In south Alentejo have now olive fields and grapes fields because of the Alqueva dam which is recent. Douro region is one of the oldest regions to produce wine in world, actually the French wine regions are a copy of Douro wine region. In South the lands are in the hands of few people, historically because the regions are not much fertile, the opposite of the north. U are right when u say north have more industries, but has nothing to do with agriculture, rocks or emigration as u say (LOL). Mateus Rose a Sogrape wine was the most sold wine in the world few years ago. And this is only wine, and I can talk about olive oil, almonds, chestnuts, nuts, corn, potato, and many other products which are traditionally grown in the north.

@@JP-vz2iy You mustn´t forget the so-called "barros de Beja", some of the most fertile land to grow wheat. In the north you have many small pieces of rocky land where you can only have cattle and a small production of vegetables for the family. If you go to Trás-os-Montes you will figure out how mountaneous it is. Besides it's too cold to grow fruit. On the west, Alcobaça region for example, is where you find most fruit and vegetables, and in Lezíria do Ribatejo, too. In Alentejo is where most olive oil is produced.
@JP-vz2iy
@JP-vz2iy 4 жыл бұрын
@@anaramos2802 You couldn't be more wrong about the north. Alentejo as u know was made by the last Republic and with severe consequences to the region soil. U are right when u talk about Alcobaça but is center and lezirias is on the border between center and south. Alentejo have now and is recent, olive oil production in large scale (intensive and super intensive agriculture) made by large companies which are consuming all water from Alqueva. I know specially well agriculture in Trás-os-Montes and If u go there u can see agriculture as u never saw... Vineyards are like gardens and is the only place in the planet u can see that. Alentejo just have more than wheat just a couple of years, since Alqueva dam. If u visit the north u can see all green every time of the year. U can't have agricultural without water that is the first law for agriculture. Many of agriculture products u know as "tomate coração de boi" are original from Douro region. I have already given examples to prove you are wrong. I am not saying bad about the south or other regions from center or south as alentejo, Beiras or Ribatejo.. in fact I know well all Portugal, and I really like alentejo to spend my vacations. I can talk about "vale da Vilariça" in the past was the place to grow fruits as melon and others to feed the country with fruit. Apples, cherries, oranges like Algarve Douro region have orange tradition, an infinite products including fruits, cereals, potato, and fresh vegetables. U don't have idea! U touch the point of the cold... For your information to grow some products, as olives, apples, grapes, almonds, nuts, and many others is imperative a cold weather. You are talking again about "rocks".. U know why Alentejo don't have rocks? Because they all moved to Lisbon! (Just messing with u..) I am sorry but Portugal is not only Lisbon, is so much than that... Clearly u need spend some time knowing your country better..

The main reason has nothing to do with what you said. Textile industry needs huge volumes of water, especially the dye industry. If you need a lot of water, you need to install your factory where you have it, and in Portugal it must be in the north.

Joen said that the gastronomy was heavy in the region of "Tras-os-Montes" and it is true, indeed, because of the weather, in the past, was very cold (snow and rain). When you visit Serra da Estrela taste a kind of sausage named ,"morcela". It is typical, special and very good. It is grilled over coals and is made in winter, when, in the past, people killed the pig and kept the meat for lhe whole year. When you will visit the center region, don't forget the "xisto" villages, in Serra da Lousã. The best known are Talasnal, Cerdeira, Casal Novo and Piodão. They are 27. The typical dish there is the "chanfana".👍

Do not forget that the north is the heart and soul of Portugal ... Almost everything is better in the North, the people, the food, the natural beauty, the history, the customs, the traditions, the quality of life ... everything. And I was born in Lisbon ... and I'm a Benfica fan ... kkkkkkkk

regarding the boulders,... They were left there by the receding ice age. Those large boulders always make me reminisce about the days in the early sixty's when i was 5 or 6 and followed behind my parents while they cut wheat with a sickle in the hot sun or picked olives in the winter. could have been fall. I was five. All i remember doing was pretending to do play by play of Benfica games, while lying down on those rocks. It was always Simoes to Eusebio,.... GOAAAAAAL!

Thank you for showing my hometown in it’s true colors. But like you said, you need to come back. There’s a festivity called “Pinheiro” (look it up in KZfaq, their part of the Nicolinas festivities) where thousands of students bring their “caixas” and play them until the pine tree is planted in the city. 29th November , but we don’t know how this will be this year. Of course, winter/Christmas is very special, the atmosphere is amazing. Don’t forget to go to Fafe during Rally Portugal, and what the match Vitoria-Braga 😉!

That is no consensus why most of industry is the north but the main reasons are. 1st- cultural reason, in the North beign hardworking is a very appreciated trait. The Northen people are also more "proud" and have a sharpen sense of no be dependent of others, industry is the perfect way out for those people 2nd -Historical, the north of Portugal is closer linked to English since the Anglo-Luso relations start and grow around Port Wine, so the English where leadrs in industrial revolution and so that had more impact in northen Portugal. 3rd-Strategic position beaside Matosinhos Port the Galician Ports are among the most important int the Iberia Peninsula and so the North is more close to those. 4th-Economic in capitals the economy tend to be more around bureaucracy, economics and finance, Lisbon is no execption and the south because of the heather was pushed more to turism. 5th-Geografy the south is more flater so agriculture is easier than in the North. So basic the industry was the best alternative for the Northen people to make a living.

Stop saying that Portugal is underrated, Portugal won the World Travel Awards several times as best place to visit in the world, Madeira islands as best islands in the world and ranks number one as best place to retire on the Forbes worldwide list.

@@Jesuscger - I meant no offense there guy. By "underrated" I meant enough people do not know how amazing Portugal is. Especially citizens of the USA. If you ask most people here what countries would be on their bucket list, I doubt Portugal would be on it or even know where it is , simply out of ignorance. And that is a good thing, believe me. You don't want Americans finding out what Portugal has to offer and invading it with their American arrogance. I am sure Europeans are very knowledgeable about Portugal and all it has to offer.

That's why people don't need to exagerat in complementing us. Shhhhhu let's keep it low profile hehehe a soft complement is enougf :) We "send" the mass tourist and hooligans to Spain... and keep the nice ones (families; retired people, etc) to us. Well not always we achive this, especialy in the last few years. But hotels raise their prices if they have too to avoid the drunken hooligans. Portugal is a family friendly let's keep it that way

8:40 There's more industry in the north and consequently more manufacturing jobs. I guess the north region always felt a bit unsupported by the central power of Lisbon, my theory is that this northern part had this "we have to work for stuff if we want it, don't expect the government to help us" mentality. Also, the historical heritage from Guimarães, being the nation's birthplace and Porto (the Invictus City) may also add up to this mindset of rebellious doers
