Exploring the Historic Iron Bridge Site: Oakwood Cemetery, Troy, NY
On September 9, 1848, the Troy Cemetery Association was established, and John Paine, D. Thomas Vail, Isaac McConihe, George M. Tibbits, John B. Gale, and Stephen E. Warren were elected trustees. A committee was designated to report an eligible location for a cemetery. The appealing site of Oakwood Cemetery was selected. On September 5, 1849, the first land was found in the area and was purchased. It was laid out into roads, walks, and burial plats by J. C. Sidney, an experienced landscape engineer, of Philadelphia. On October 16, 1850, the grounds were dedicated, and named Oakwood Cemetery. [1]
Although I could not find a definitive date as to when the Iron Bridge was constructed it does seem that most of the cemetery construction and landscaping occurred between 1854-85. Research shows that the bridge was scraped during World War II for the war effort. [2] (If someone has further information, please post it below.)
