Yorktown, Virginia was established in 1691. In a few years the town began to take root. The better homes, inns and public buildings were developed on the river bluff while "York under the hill" (the waterfront) featured wharves, warehouses, small stores, lodging and drinking places. Yorktown became an important tobacco port, exporting crops from area plantations. At peak prosperity (1740-1770), Yorktown had several hundred buildings and almost 2,000 residents, making it a substantial 18th century community, and rivaling the size of the nearby colonial capital, Williamsburg. he most noted citizen of Yorktown was Thomas Nelson, Jr., a signer of the Declaration of Independence, Governor of Virginia and commander of the Virginia Militia at the Siege of 1781.

Great video! I'm a descendant of the Nelsons of Yorktown. It's a great place to visit! It truly is cool to walk in the same places that such people of history once lived, worked, and socialized.

Excellent video!! Never knew much of the history of the Battle of Yorktown. I can just imagine pedestrian and horse traffic on Main Street. The Cornwallis cave is a great addition to the story!

Awesome video. I was there when i was 12. My grandfather got me interested in history. I remember the cannon ball in the Nelson House. I thought that was the coolest part of the visit. I remember being able to view some of the houses in the area. BTW, figure out the Adult Part yet....lol

An interesting bit of history...one, or more, of the cannon ball holes in the Nelson house was actually fired by Thomas Nelson Jr after his soldiers refused his command to fire on it, out of respect for their general's home. So he fired on it himself! IIRC, the British general, Cornwallace, had made it one of his bases of operations in Yorktown. So, General Nelson wanted them out, even if he had to destroy his own home to do it. He really lived up to the pledge he signed when he signed the Declaration of Independence.

A little late to the party, but catching up on your Yorktown content. I’ll admit revolutionary period content is something I need to spend more time learning about. This seems as good as any point to start.

Fantastic video! During the past two years I've had the privilege of visiting Historic Jamestown and Colonial Williamsburg on a number of occasions, filming several dozen videos. However, I have not yet been able to spend much time in Yorktown. It's been around 7 months since I last visited the Historic Triangle and the time away is being keenly felt. Until I have a chance to visit again, I will thoroughly enjoy your series of videos to scratch my itch of Colonial history in Virginia! I really enjoyed this one. That cave was especially cool. If you're interested, I highly recommend watching the following presentation from CW on the March to Yorktown with their Lafayette & Washington interpreters. It's top notch: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oZaGg89qmbS7iGw.html Have you read Nathaniel Philbrick's book "In the Hurricane's Eye" yet? I haven't, but it's definitely on my to-read list. Previous to the CW video I had had no idea that in essence, the joint American-French victory at Yorktown was due to the naval superiority of the French forces in their clash with British ships the previous month. Looking forward to your next episode already!

I absolutely love that area. So much history and the scenery near Yorktown is absolutely beautiful. I’ll check out that video! Thanks for sharing it. I’ll also have to look up that book. Many people don’t realize the French okayed a key roll in the victory at Yorktown. Thanks for watching as always.
