Exploring Iconic Battle of Midway Shipwrecks | Nautilus Live

From September 8-12, 2023, an interdisciplinary, interagency, and international team led by Ocean Exploration Trust aboard Exploration Vessel Nautilus had the honor and privilege to conduct in-depth archaeological assessments of three World War II aircraft carriers lost during the Battle of Midway. Our exploration resulted in the first visual survey of Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) Akagi 赤城, the first detailed views of United States Ship Yorktown since it was first located 25 years ago, and a comprehensive survey of IJN Kaga 加賀. These historically significant wrecks were explored in their final resting places within Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument, the largest protected area in the U.S. and one of the largest in the world.
Archaeologists from Japan, the U.S., and over 100 experts around the world were connected to ship operations via telepresence technology, helping guide the mission and providing valuable real-time interpretations throughout the surveys. Each dive was launched and closed with protocol ceremonies to honor this place and all who lost their lives in ways that reflected their significance to Kānaka ʻOiwi (Native Hawaiian), Japanese, and U.S. military families and communities.
These historic, noninvasive, visual survey dives were conducted during the E/V Nautilus Ala ʻAumoana Kai Uli expedition, a 27-day NOAA-funded mission to explore never-before-seen deep-water habitats to collect baseline data needed to support management in the most remote and northwestern section of PMNM. The surveys of the ship’s final resting places were aimed at documenting these historically significant wrecks, examining their condition, and honoring all those who lost their lives on both sides of the battle.
The Battle of Midway surveys were made possible by the expertise, support, and collaboration of many partners including Ocean Exploration Trust, NOAA Ocean Exploration, NOAA Office of National Marine Sanctuaries, SEARCH, Inc., U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command, International Midway Memorial Foundation, Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument, Office of Hawaiian Affairs, the State of Hawaiʻi, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, University of Maryland, University of Rhode Island, University of Hawaiʻi, Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, Air/Sea Heritage Foundation, and Japanese archaeological colleagues from Teikyo University, Tokai University, and Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology.

My grandfather spent his entire career at the Newport News shipyard - he was in the Apprentice Class of 1941. He served part of his apprenticeship by helping to lay the Douglas fir decks of Yorktown and Enterprise. As such, those ships have a special significance to our family, particularly the Yorktown. I offer my heartfelt thanks for all of your efforts - it warms my heart to see her almost seaworthy on the ocean floor, even after 81 years. We build'em strong in Newport News.

It broke my heart when the ROV was damaged and was unable to get a visual survey of Akagi, and only Kaga. I can't put into words how happy I am to finally have eyes on her 4 years later. I honestly did not think we'd get an opportunity like this again. Thank you team and everyone involved. Much respect to the service members and their families. Thank you.

Thank you for sharing this video, I’m Japanese. My uncle was a pilot in the Imperial Japanese Navy, and he was sunk along with the aircraft carrier “Souryu” at Midway. I know that Japan was on the wrong side in WW2, but soldiers need to fight for their own country. My uncle and grandfather were great soldiers. I really appreciate you sharing this video, as I can’t visit there.

The video engineers definitely processed the footages after the dives. And i think Nautilus' live broadcasting kind of "compress" the live footage anyway.... So what we see live on KZfaq probably completely different than what they see in control van.

The live stream is probably limited by the ship's satellite connection bandwidth. But for these, they can take their time to send full quality recordings.

I hope that a 3D model of the entire wreck(s) will be constructed. I know it has been done for Yorktown, Bismarck, Yamato, Titanic, etc. I absolutely love the footage, but being able to see the entirety of the wreck would bring it into perspective. For instance, seeing a model of the whole Yamato wreck truly brought to light the catastrophic destruction visited upon her!

The fact the island is still attached to the ship is remarkable considering the hell that The dauntless has rained down upon the ship and the catastrophic explosions that were triggered. This is a much better expedition or at least a lot more footage then was released when the RV Petrel found this year's back.

Something I did not appreciate when the Petrel team filmed Kaga was the level of damage to the main deck. I figured the hangar would've been mostly torn away, and saw as much in 2019, but those direct hits and secondary explosions wholly obliterated the inner hull so much. It is no wonder Kaga suffered the highest total death toll.

素晴らしい映像をありがとうございます。腰を痛めて手術するまで、国内外の海で大東亜戦争で戦没した沈船をダイビングで見てきたダイバーです。多くがトラックペリリュー、小笠原諸島などでした。国内でも近場で広島湾・柱泊地沖の戦艦”長門”など水深30～60ｍの範囲でした。このように水深5100ｍの海底など人の潜水限界を遥に超え場所です。現在の最新鋭の潜水艦でもそこまで潜れないでしょう。...私が鎮魂のダイビングを行った頃は、日本酒の小パックに塩と米を必ず持参し捧げて追悼したものです。比較的に浅い海に沈む艦船でもご遺骨は必ず存在します。まして赤城艦内では沈没前に退艦不可能だった多くの将兵が眠られていると想うと言葉を失います。こうした海底のは墓場に行った方は誰しもが感じられると思いますが、暗闇と静寂の中で時が止まったような艦内で浮上する事を忘れていますような想いに捕らわれ無神論者であっても敬虔な気持ちになり手を合わせずにいられなくなります。...国の為に命を捧げた我々日本人の先人・先達に深い感謝と哀悼の意を表します。　合掌

I read that the Kaga’s bridge took a direct hit which almost completely obliterated the island. Islands on Japanese carriers were typically a lot smaller and less extensive than American islands like on the Lexington, Yorktown or Essex class carriers

I hope that with important wrecks like these, heck most wrecks we can find, will get a full digital scan, like what they did with Titanic. That way we can continue to preserve the memory of these ships, even as they wither away, but we can also explore and learn without disturbing the spirits of those who went down with their ships.

aircraft carrier akagi had 30 attack planes and torpedo bombers on her flight deck, so a single bomb hit caused all of them to explode at once, so there was no way to put out the fire, and she sank in 15 minutes. two other aircraft carriers, Hiryu and Kaga, were in similar situation.

A correction Akagi was hit by only One Bomb that was dropped by Lt Dick Best. There was a mix up when the air group was attacking the Kaga . The leader of the Air group went for the near carrier and NOT the farther carrier Akagi. Lt Best saw the mistake and he and his two wingman were the only three aircraft to attack the Akagi. One wingman missed forward and the one that missed aft was a near miss that later caused aa rudder problem on the Akagi. As these Japanese carriers went down, so did the trapped men, and those who died on board. It's horrifying to think about. That's why we should not think of these things as "relics" but as a graveyard that should be protected.

It is unfortunate the mission was too deep for the Hercules. The lack of stability provided by the tethered concept really reduced the mission quality not only varying (undulating) distance / focus but also hindering the ability to get as close to the subject as in the past with stability provided with the two ROV tethered approach. The 2016 Nautilus Live 4 day mission on the EX CVL-22 USS Independence where you were able to drop down into the hangar bay is a good example. How easy would it be to implement the tethered concept for future deep missions (excessive depth for either Hercules) with a second borrowed Argus type ROV?

They actually planned to use Atalanta and Little Hercules (with depth capability of 6000m) for these archeology dives. But Lil Herc have some mechanical issues that can't be fixed on board so they just use Atalanta instead.

WHat's the actual point of looking for these sunken ships? It's interesting for sure but it's hard to see any real benefit other than to a certain morbid curiousity.

Might help provide closure to some since they sometimes hold the remains of family members, and seeing where they died allows them to potentially pay respect that fellow sailors who survived also getting to see their ships alteast one last time where they can pay their respect to their fallen comrades.

Additionally, PMNM is a UNESCO World Heritage site distinguished for both its cultural and natural significance, the only site with this special distinction in the U.S. It is currently being considered for national marine sanctuary designation to further safeguard its diverse natural, cultural, and maritime heritage resources for generations to come. @@EVNautilus If you say so - personally I find it hard to see a rusting shattered wreck as a cultural resource . It doesn't really increase our historical knowledge as we already know when and how and why these ships sank , looking at their remains changes nothing. . I do think it's important that the shallower wrecks are protected from the illegal salvors - not for the sake of the metal but because of the dead still in them.

The valuable resources of all shipwrecks should be recovered. It's not "respecting the dead" to leave it all there. It's a waste of resources. I don't think that's what "the dead" would want. I've talked to numerous sailors who agree. We're running out of resources, but leaving valuable resources sitting on the bottom of the ocean. Foul play. That's DIS-respect.

I know right! Get this , theres a whole building that's destroyed in the middle of the town of Hiroshima in Japan and they just like leave it like that. Like how rude is that, don't they know the value of like the scrap iron in it? don't they know the planet is running out of resources? They even have something similar in Washington D.C. where they have like a bunch of this really nice black granite out in middle of a field. I mean do they even realize how many nice counter tops and bathroom sinks or nice tiles all that black granite could make? i mean they even ruined its potential value even more by etching stuff into them, lt really seems like some people can be so short sighted sometimes and frivolous with the limited resources we have on this planet and i agree seems like a lot can be really disrespectful. And for me personally, my grandpa was a real practical and no nonsense kind of person, so when i inherited his box of old war metals like his purple heart and medal of honor, I thought that he wouldn't want me wasting all that nice valuable metal that they were made out of by just keeping it in a box somewhere to look at, so that's why I went and melted them down and sold them for the scrap value, I totally think that's what he would've wanted and talked to numerous others that agreed as well.
