On November 3 and 4th, Ocean Exploration Trust explored the wrecks of Imperial Japanese Navy submarines I-201 and I-401. At the end of WWII, these vessels were surrendered to the US Navy and intentionally scuttled off the coast of Oʻahu in 1946. Discovered by the Hawaiʻi Undersea Research Laboratory in the early 2000s, the team returned as part of a technology testing expedition to examine changes in these sites since their last survey over a decade before.
Every Ocean Exploration Trust expedition brings together experts from many disciplines, including scientists, technology specialists, students, professional mariners, and educators. This archaeological investigation was made possible by the expertise, support, and collaboration of many partners, including Hawaiʻi Undersea Research Lab, the University of Hawaiʻi, NOAA Ocean Exploration, NOAA Office of National Marine Sanctuaries, the Office of Naval Research, and SEARCH Inc.

I watched this footage live with you and it was incredibly crisp & clear. I-201 was in surprisingly good shape. Your maneuvering around the sub was impeccable and respected the vessel properly with care. A piece of history opened up in front of us.

@@JohnSmith-uy7sv These subs are a link to a past that is rapidly disappearing, and after decades underwater they are extremely fragile. The slightest jarring could seriously damage them, but these ROV crews maintained their distance and made sure just to observe, not interact or disturb. These crews ensured that these old subs get the respect they deserve as remnants of a bygone era.

@@JohnSmith-uy7sv Pal, there’s no need for yelling here. I do believe in and worship God, and both He and Jesus Christ are fundamental core pillars of who I am. However, it’s also important to remember and respect our own history, which is what these subs and other vessels and artifacts from their era represent, for those who forget and refuse to learn from the past are doomed to repeat it.

To answer the question around 5:45, generally subs of the time had 2 periscopes: the commander's (attack) scope and a navigation scope. The attack scope usually had a smaller profile for lower detection during attacks runs. The navigation scope was usually larger, could collect more light, had a larger FOV, and was better for navigating/observation. I know on many German subs, they could both be used at the same time. Again, I'm speaking generally of many subs of the time as a layman. I am NOT any sort of IJN expert!

Given how Pacific war graves are often desecrated by the “salvagers” from certain maritime powers, it would be better for any sunk warship to remain undiscovered and restful til the Final Trumpet sounds and the dead of the seas are called forth again.

Wonderful video! But the footage does not show the hanger deck of the I-400? Or maybe its my aging eyes! The I-400 was the biggest sub in the world at the time & was a Submarine Aircraft carrier. The I -400 was able to carry three Aichi M6A Seiran aircraft underwater to their destinations. Yamamoto wanted to hit the Panama Canal so to slow down all the weapons that the US was bringing to the Pacific. He also considered an attack on the west coast of the United States. I wish the Navy had turned them into museums so we could check em out without having to dive. Too deep for me anyway. Mahalo for your hard work!

That being said if not in deep water maybe more shallow has anyone had an idea about having more submersible or a floating gantry suspending light by cables allowing awesome footage even if from only one camera. I do think the britanic would be awesome. Maybe even a submerged frame connected to adjustable cables connected to floats. Be able to change the angle of the light underwater. 6:37 Its not an I, its pronounced how we pronounce 'E' They actually don't have anyhting that sounds like an English i (either way to say, as in Tim, or Time) tim would be pronounced as 'cheemu' and 'time' would be pronounced as 'Taimu', notice neither of these have the I sound used in Tim or Time. For some reason we use "I" to represent the sounds for things like "Ki, Mi, Ri, etc." even though those are pronounced "Kee (as in key), Mee (as in mean), and Ree (as in real) I guess the reason for this is because there are different sounds such as "Ke, Me, Re etc." that would need to use the letter E instead. TLDR: The Japanese language does not have the " i " sound, as in "eye" or "ih" The character is pronounced "E" (saying its name)
@melmoomlem7321

It would be i - ni hyaku ichi. イ-201 い- にひゃくいち。 Series I, which for Japan is the equivalent to C, because their alphabet goes a e i u o ( あえいうお), if they went alphabetical. But Americans aren't going to pronounce it properly because they're not educated about foreign languages and don't care. ですね。
@melmoomlem7321
@melmoomlem7321 6 ай бұрын
They would say Tim ティム and it might be spelled weird (ちむ さん timu san) but they'd do their best to say it correctly. That's the point of katakana, pronouncing foreign words. And they wouldn't say time weird, they'd just use their own word for it, jikan じかん。 And i does say eye in words like hai. But yeah for the most part it's ee.

The lack of corrosion may have to do with the lower oxygen concentration in deep water. Salt water won't corrode steel on its own, it needs oxygen to form rust.

@@nyanmonstar Heres a story . They actually built a Sub that had a mini hanger in it with a catapult inside. There was a air plane inside with fold out wings, they would come to the surface open up the hanger on deck fold out the wings and launch the plane off the deck . They covered the Sub in tar so radar would not pick them up. They came to the US out on the Pacific coast opened the door put a bomb on the plane and launched it. The plane dropped a bomb over by Brookings Ore out in the forest came back landed on the water the plane had pontoons on it. They had a crane lifted the plane out of the water folded the wings a and put it back in the hanger it had a clam shell design on the doors. They closed it piolt went back inside and the sub slid out of into the night. When we won the war there were three of these subs and the Japs surrendered themselves and the subs to the US they told this show us how to opperate it and you can go home. And they did . They said it was so advanced and the controls were different than ours the US Navy had trouble understanding the controls. Are you ready for this? THE US WAS AFRAID THE RUSSIANS WOULD GET THEM THEY WENT OUT AND TORPEDOED ALL THREE SUBS AND SUNK THEM ! They found all three in the bottom of the ocean years ago in very bad shape. I was so pissed they were in US Possession no Rusky is going to take them
