I once shared a ride with a cool old couple to San Francisco International Airport who along the way showed me a picture of two rocking chairs in front of a fireplace in their cabin not far from here and told me why they were there. I thought they were going off somewhere together but instead they were parting ways again off on separate adventures. He was volunteering and teaching young scientists someplace in italy, passing on knowledge he had attained in his age and she was teaching and managing a group of nurses who travel to impoverished places to help those in need. They proceeded to tell me that someday when they are old and grey they will sit down in those chairs and tell each other all the amazing stories, adventures, and share the memories they attained doing all those things. Now keep in mind these two were in there mid to late 80s and still had the need to be out living life to the fullest, fulfilling dreams and doing things so I thought I'd share that with you since you truly do love exploring! You're currently making memories that you too one day when you are old and grey can sit down someplace and tell your kids and grandkids who will be truly amazed 😎👍

My old hometown, been away 25 years, when i was young it was a bustling city, a ton more factories, grain silos, business, homes up and down, side by side every street......sadly, then the factories, silos, steel mills, etc. started closing in the late 70's.....and one thing led to another....

Why do you think it all vanished and where do we get our grain from now
@greg33770
@greg33770 3 жыл бұрын
@@melissagualco6623 good question, I'm not a historian, so to be fair it's an educational guess from experience, but i am a senior, seen Buffalo when it wasn't what it looks like today. I know much of the heavy industry, machinery, tool making, related products, steel mills, etc... that were once here, were older, not automated. My first job was at JH Williams on Vulcan Street(they closed), use to make all kinds of tools. Cheaper foreign products was probably the biggest reason. Much of the grain use to be shipped via the Great Lakes from the midwest, there were cereal and bread manufacturers in Buffalo, then trucked or trained eastward from Buffalo. Grain is still grown the same places, but the way it's transported has become more modern(instead of shipping). Probably trucking, and trains. Also many more crereal and bread plants were built and modernized locally all over America, so they didn't have to ship the grain so far just to be manufactured, made the whole process quicker and cheaper. Much of the these big grain silos are all over farmlands all across the midwest.

@@melissagualco6623 and when i was a kid 1950's-60's, there use to be more silos, there were some along Furhman Blvd, along the Lake front too. The city has sure changed. You should have seen what Buffalo use to look like, all I have is memories. Do you live there ?

Steve I think the silos are still there due to the high cost of demolition. I have a little abandoned silo type mill in my area where I live called the KEA Mill. They couldn’t demo it due to the dynamite needed that would blow windows out on homes and buildings for miles around. City owns it and it just sits there.

Your climbing ladders with that backpack in cramped spaces reminded me of doing that in old church towers in Turkey a few years ago. Sometimes I had to climb with one hand and pull my backpack around tight turns. In some places it's best to just have the camera and a GoPro.

OMG!!! My 2 worst fears, spiders & heights... kudos to you, you conquered them both!!! Bless your hearts, my entire body was shaking when you were up sooo high & near the edge, my stomach was even doing flip flops😳 I am so happy that the investors are repurposing those buildings!!! All cement so structurally they will withstand sooo very much!!! I would live there also, just nearer to the ground!!! The stores & businesses that they can provide will be wonderful!!! Thank you for sharing this epic place!!! Also all of you need masks!!! Thank goodness that you are young & sure footed... I’d be fallen in 2 seconds flat!!!😭 If it weren’t for you Steve, I would have never gotten to experience this, as having MS would never allow me to go where you did or be able to see what you see, so Thank you again Steve for being sooo very brave & fearless ❤️

Hi Steve, Every Sunday is my time to kick back and binge on your videos. As I was watching this video and saw all of the peeling walls and columns I thought to myself, I wonder if Steve checks these industrial sites for hazardous materials. I wonder if those walls and columns are full of asbestos and maybe that is why the area has not been demolished. Hope you are well and remember to explore with knowledge.🙂📷

This place is fun...I was figuring Seneca one was where you were going next, I used to be a security supervisor there many years ago, I could show you the ins and the outs of that place. It will be interesting to see how it's coming along over all these years, I moved from blo in 2015. As crazy as this sounds what they're converting the place into was something I had mentioned when they were asking ideas of what to do with the place when the bank moved out entirely. 2 levels of a underground garage and 40 plus floors and a 2 story wing makes for some awesome endless possibilities for residential and business in one place and out in buffalo people were starting to move back into the city being close to work and making the commune easier so the trend was to convert old factories into living space. Side note did you go all the way to the top of that room on the roof? it has a helipad on it that ended up only ever being used twice before they deemed it unsafe for a helicopter to land due to the winds that are created up there. If I do recall the only two people to use it was Frank Sinatra and I wanna say one of the presidents maybe but don't quote me on it.
