Body Double is one of my favorite DePalma movies of all time, never miss it, nor would I miss any Brian DePalma movie for that matter. I have always admired this beautiful home and would love to see it in person, even if it is from the street!

Lautner had been a student of Frank Lloyd Wright. When he went on his own he kept some of Wright's mannerisms but mostly took off in a direction all his own. He did a number of houses that garnered praise from the architectural community, but probably the most lauded was the Sheats-Goldstein house. It's the house used in the movie The Big Lobowski as the home of the pornographer.

My father Chris Wojciechowski designed this home when he was working for John Lautner and never got credit by we have his designs 😎
@deezynar
@deezynar 5 жыл бұрын
How much do you believe your father is responsible for, and how much is Lautner? I am an architectural draftsman who works for architects. I am handed designs by the architects and generally expected to make them work. If I feel that I have to change the architectural design to get something to function, I consult with the architect who did the design. It is not typical for them to hand me something that is a complete scribble, they give their work more thought than that. I do at times tell an architect that I think they should make some changes to the architectural scheme to improve it. I may even draw a sketch of what I have in mind. Sometimes they go with it, other times there are reasons they can't. Lautner was very skilled. Of all of Wright's students, Lautner was as good as Schindler and Neutra. I can't imagine that he slacked off on this project unless he had bigger projects he was busy on and couldn't get the time to do it. My guess is he handed some sort of plan and elevation to your dad. How dialed in it would have been, I couldn't say of course.

@eclemensen Yes, anyone who has to work with design drawings has seen problems that they have had to report to the designer. I also worked for a mechanical engineering firm. We would at times have to remind architects that we need room to run air conditioning ducts. That's just one example of how architects, and architectural designers, can, and occasionally do, miss important details. The real question is, did Lautner design the Cheomosphere, or his draftsman. I'm willing to concede that Mr. Wojciechowski caught some items that Lautner missed. Maybe even some big ones. But the broad strokes of the scheme almost certainly came from Lautner himself. Once more, I say that as an architectural draftsman myself. I have had a strong interest in architecture, and in design, for 4 1/2 decades. I don't claim to be a great designer, but I have an above average grip on what a good design requires. When I see an architect's design drawings that have what I believe are compromises in the aesthetics, I mention it just as loudly as I tell them about problems with any functional issues. That's part of the job. You, and I, are additional sets of eyes that have to not just look at the design, but open the hood and get inside it. With that said, it is up to the architect in charge of the project to decide what change, if any, they want to make. Mind you, if the plans go all the way to construction and one of the contractors can do his job because the plans block him, some sort of change WILL get made. And more often than not, the contractor(s) will do it without saying anything to anyone. Are you creating real models, or virtual models? If virtual, what software? Do you aspire to do architectural design work on your own?

Great film guys. Chemosphere is just 5 minutes from my house in the Hollywood Hills and I have driven past it on Mulholland many times. You can actually drive up to the gates of property as the roads are public roads, I even asked an assistant taking groceries up the funicular if I could go up to the property to take a few photos, and he said yes! Was a few years ago. Owned by Taschen, who started his business life in Germany selling books about architecture. Very close by is the now demolished Errol Flynn ranch, where I think Justin Timberlake has a property.

Technically a “funicular” is any Inclined Railway / “angled elevator”. Although it seems many examples around LA are two car-counter weighted designs that isn’t actually necessary to qualify as a funicular. Aside from that- great episode and I love the channel!

Architect Guy A. Bartoli, R.I.P., developed a very similar but smaller 2 bedroom award winning modular home around 1966 called "Topsider" which was based in Marina del Rey and N. Carolina but constructed world-wide of which an example can be seen in movie Brainstorm, staring Natalie Wood (cause of how Catalina Island boating death occurred in 1981 never determined) and Christopher Walken around the one hour thirteen minute mark (or of course a Google search might be easier). Believe a few homes were constructed in the Los Angeles area which might be more accessible and just a suggestion for interesting video.
