The first time I documented an abandoned place was shortly after my childhood home became abandoned. Almost 20 years later, I return to document its final days and come full circle back to where it all began. This video features remastered segments of that first 2002 explore!

Chris Luckhardt has documented and photographed some of the most iconic and viral images of abandoned places around the world. He was among the first photographers to publish photos in the press from legendary abandoned places like Hashima Island, Nara Dreamland, Michigan Central Station, and Six Flags New Orleans. His body of work has led to interviews and collaborations with The White House, Netflix, Ford, GQ China, ABC News, Good Morning America, Scholastic Canada, Yahoo Japan, and many more. In 2016, the Obama administration invited Chris to photograph a private citizen "haunted" tour of The White House.

It took me 28 years to visit my fathers grave for the first time since the funural. He was both my hero and idol, and sometimes as hard as probably his father was to him once. I was 8 when I found him dead in our house. Life took me away on a crazy path after that. So it took all those years to find my road back to a rich fullfilling life again. I can both se and hear your pain and happines doing this my friend, Its strong I know, wonderfull aswell. I did a videographic memory lane tour this summer, for me and my siblings to our childhood place. So tonight I have traveled with you from the trip at the Russian space place, via som amusment parks to your childhood home. The end really made me sad, and on the otherhand greatfull for still having the ability to remember younger years. Stay safe and thanks brother ;-)

I saw your comment a few days ago and it really stuck with me. I cut out a section of my video when I showed and talked about the night I found my dad dying on the kitchen floor from a massive stroke. They gave us a foundation to build upon in their absence, and it sounds like you've done it. Thanks for watching some of my other adventures that in many ways were fulfilling my father's unfulfilled dreams to travel the world. You stay safe as well!

Hi, I have just watched all of your video and really enjoyed it and listening to all your memorys of your old family home...I loved all the little details of things you told us about and i really felt for you and fully get your emotions you must have re visiting and seeing flash backs of your mum and dad and brother as you look in the corners of each room...... I had been desperate to visit my childhood home where i lived between 1984 and 1992 ....I left a kind worded note through the letterbox for the current owner asking if they would mind me having a very quick look inside etc and why i was asking ...and i was over the moon when i received a text to say yes and a date,... YOur visit and mine were similar with regards to seeing cracks on a ceiling which was there..and talking about things your dad built which is still intact there etc... when i went insdie my home, there was one particular thing i was hoping would still be there ....2 screww marks where i had passed my dad 2 screws to fix a speaker up on the ceiling when i was 8 ....and they were there! 2 clear visible screw holes..(re painted over with white paint) but still visible... My dad built a large rockery garden in the back in 1985 and it had all been took away and flattened...BUT ..all the rocks his hands touched and carried to make that rockery were all still there draged to the side in a pile ! I wantd to ask the lady if I could take one of the rocks to keep for memories sake but felt she may think im carzy ha ha I am not sure about yourself, but for me the whole experience of re visiting my childhood home was very strange and almost as if I was looking in on my past life ...very surreal indeed..my mum passed away in 2018 so it was extra emotional to see her bedroom etc... my dad is still alive but lived in holland , A very big super like for this fantastic video from the UK , thank you for shareing this with us and i am quite sure your dad will have been with you in spirit looking round the things you built with him in there , Have a lovely evening, Sonique 🏠

Hi Chris Thanks for sharing. I remember having a reunion at the house. We cleaned up the basement & actually hosed out the basement. I thought that was really cool as a kid. I loved your parents.

Hey Deb! Hosing out the basement with potent cleaners was an annual event - usually just before summer. It was one way to keep that 1896 basement in check! They thought the world of all you and loved when you'd visit.

Firstly, it must be confusing and heartbreaking seeing the childhood home trashed like that. Trashing is so unnecessary and it leads to a lot of places being demolished, instead of just restored and saved. But also, that bathroom... POOR DOGS! It seems someone kept a dog, or several, locked into the bathroom. All that cr*p is not done in a day or two, so that poor dog or dogs may have been kept there for long, suffering.... Or they had a hell lot of dogs there (still for several days and not ok). So horrible, it makes me feel sick.

Sadly, it's not uncommon in rural areas to treat dogs poorly. I recall stopping by there years earlier and seeing a series of cages beside the shed - obviously for dogs. My guess is whomever lived there last also was responsible for potentially cruel dog treatment. :(

Whomever vandalized the house did so with reckless abandon! It was difficult but cathartic to revisit after so many years. And editing the footage was not easy - it might be much too personal to be accessible for casual viewers. But I’m hoping anyone who does watch it will gain some insight into the stories lost to time that occur in these abandoned homes.

@@chrisluckhardt This video did exactly that for me, I did gain a lot of insight on abandoned homes. It’s sad scrappers got to it and the people who renovated it pulled out the shag carpet and replaced it with what is (in my mind at least) the most ugly and stereotypical “house carpet” I’ve ever seen. Even though it was hard I hope you were able to gain the closure you needed by seeing the house for one last time.

They did they looked so unlove. She kept that house lovely. No wonder you wasn't allowed in the special room. Honestly I cried it was so emotional to see all what your dad it and provided a lovely home to be trashed and knocked down.. felt like they were my famiky for a split few mins.. lovely how we could see it before the damage.. I'd give my right arm for a property like that xx

You know Chris, the feelings you are relaying are strong. I know what you are feeling as you explore what once was and is now gone. My wife and I lived in Adak Navy base housing for 3 busy years. It’s odd how seeing it in your videos affected me. I miss my parents too, what a nice tribute you did for yours, may they rest in peace. Great stuff, thank you. 🇨🇦🇺🇸🍺

Your parents looked so kind and loving. Your mum's story sounds like a lot of post-war English migrants: migrating to other parts of the "Empire" and settling after their adventuring was done. I had a relative who did the same thing but to Australia.

Thank you, they were really good people who were liked or loved by everyone. Never heard anyone say a bad word about them. And yes, the exodus from the worst parts of post-war England was immense. I read that 500,000 emigrated to Canada in the first two decades after the war. Churchill was begging people to stay!

Thank you, Jenny. After filming and cutting back through the corn field, I sat in the car silent for a while. I just didn't really know what to think or do because my senses were overloaded. I rewatched the video recently and the last couple of minutes are very difficult to get through. I'm glad I was able to return and document an important part of my parents' lives.

My parents have passed away as well. There's no place like your childhood home. We lived in are home from the time I was age seven all through my teenage years. My parents sold it for a hundred and fifty thousand and now it is up for sale for over nine hundred thousand. It's within walking distance to a big shopping center.

this is both awesome and heartbreaking. Reminds me of when we lost my childhood home after my parents divorced and had to leave within a few days. It's terrible to see your memories in this condition........ But you never really know what the family went though, I guess... sad yet hopeful vibes all-around here.

Really cool video. I think it would be amazing if somebody went back to their childhood home 25 or 30 years after it was abandoned by their family To find it virtually as it was left by them. To be able to go back into my childhood bedroom and look at all my long forgotten things of that time would be really amazing.

I was in an abandoned farmhouse (not far from mine in this video) a few years after the son left it to neglect. It was virtually unchanged. Being so rural and off the main county roads somewhat helped to protect it from vandals.

If your farm was in the london snow belt,yes youd get lots of snow! I went to Fanshawe college when i was 18 back in 74,we had a major snow storm then! I was wiping my boots off the top of the bus stop sign!

I went to Fanshawe too! We had major snow during the 1980s. I have photos of us buried in 5-10 feet of snow taken on a Kodak Disc camera! The snow would blow easterly between the house and barn and pile up so much dad would park the cars beside the house!

It must have been extremely depressing seeing your childhood home in this state. I drive my childhood home all the time. It looks almost the same as it did when we moved out in 2002. The only difference is they took out the big trees in the front.

The house was a symbol of my parent's lives and hard work, so seeing it such a derelict state was overwhelming. Seeing the house demolished was a shock, but later I was relieved that it had been put out of its misery.

Our kitchen was always cold during windy winter nights. My mom would often stand on the heat register in front of the broom closet beside the fridge. 😂 My dad installed a second mini-furnace under the west side of the house and it made a huge difference.

Thank you. It's challenging to reveal the true history of abandoned houses. As you saw, I had an unusually close connect to this house that a random explorer wouldn't have. I could've spent hours sharing stories about the house that likely wouldn't interest most people.

At the cost of new homes on sw ontario, I'd look into buying the acreage the house sits on. What area is this in? Looks like our swest ontario corn country!Essex Kent or lambton counties. The picture of your dads old farm that was a nice setup! Too bad they tore down the barn! My uncke Earl and my aunt Greta got into selling real estate,and she noticed our city neighbor had cut down 2 beutiful blue spruce,on his front lawn,so at the time,she figured these were worth about 18000$ each. My new neighbor was lazy and didnt like cutting around them,so he had them cut down! She said if his new mortgage wasn't paid off,since the guy just bought the house back in 74 for 40k,his mortgage could be called in!!!,and if he didnt ask the bank to do that or any major modifications, same thing! So to answer your statement, if the bank didnt authorize the demolition of a good barn,he'd be asked to pay off his mortgage or foreclosure would be applied,if the banks auditor saw the place missing a barn,which js a major functioning peice of equipment on a working farm! Or if they allowed it. All that being said,if the barn was in such a state of decsy,and he called the bank, and said: look I have to tear down this barn becsuse its unsafe,or,we dont use it for livestock anymore!" That's the only way the bank would approve that. All that being said,a lot of farms old barns were built back in pioneer days,with mortice and tenon peg system,and had to have hay in the haymow to keep weight on the wooden pegs that held it together! And a lot of animal husbandry has disappeared in sw ontario! My father's generation quit doing that type of labour intensive farming, which kept you from going on vacations! And high in debt thanks to the govt having the Royal bank parade out new mortgages back in 65,because the govt thought our farmers would quit workong there farms and stop producing food,which is why a farm is in the millions to own! Back 50 yrs ago,a lot of farms around Essex county were small 50 acre patches the crown gave out post 1900! 1860's. Ive traveled across Canada,and a lot of barns and family farms are gone,some farmers don't even live on theire land, but in the city,and only go out on the land to plant and harvest their crops! My uncke Cliff had a pioneer farm in Shipka ontario,the barns gone now and someone else owns the farm, he had me drive back in one of the pegs that held it up! but they built a new barn,called a tin can! That's all you see out there if any! Ta!

I'm writing a book (first draft is complete!) about my adventures, and the theme of urban flight is prominent. Family farms are a thing of the past, including our little 122.5 acre farm. And yes, dad always mentioned the half acre. 😂 As for the barn, the unconfirmed story I heard from old neighbours is the new owners faked a collapse and then burned the collapsed beams and boards. Our farm was located between Brunner and Monkton, 20 minutes north of Stratford. If you're really curious, here are the coordinates: 43.555488, -81.012254

16:20 21:51 Seeing that this was the biggest room on the top floor, it would have been ideal for it to be the parents' bedroom. Of course after your explanation that this room was not heated well during the cold days, no wonder they did not choose it.

I would've chosen the biggest room too, and updated the insulation. But I think they chose their room because it offered the most privacy. It was the furthest from the front door and the kitchen, which was our most active room. I'm thankful I had access to such a large bedroom for a few years!

I went through this at 3 yrs old,after dad died,I,noticed mom wasn't happy,so out of my 3 yr old mouth i said,If your not happy here lets sell and go somewhere else! Talk about out of the mouth of babes!

It sounds like you watched to the end and know they let it completely go. All power was disconnected so it was probably a light glare or reflection in the hallway.

@chrisluckhardt : iIt's sad to see these old homes torn down. Some of our Essex county farmers started living in condos on Riverside drive along the river! And rented their farm houses out to others that lke to live the country life! But driving to work and back burns up a lot if gas and cars or pickups! Out on the prairies did you notice all the aspen trees where farm houses used to be,they burn them down to stop being taxed on then,andvfarm it,besides being hard to heat like your dads old place, and live in town!

@@davidrussell8795 Speaking of big old trees: we had two massive oak trees in the back acreage that the new owners cut down. My brother and I still wish we had did it ourselves and used the wood for something good. Those trees were so intimidating to me as a young guy.

My dad grew up on the farm next door, which later was owned by one of his older brothers. He sold it, and the new neighbours invited us over after completing renovations. I asked my dad after the visit what he thought of all the changes. Without missing a beat, he said, “You can’t go home again.” His words were so present as I was walking through the house again for the first time in almost two decades.

I've been waiting for the day to visit my childhood home, I pass by it every day because I only moved 5 minutes away but it's still the same owners since we left. 25 years later, still waiting hahaha. I drove up in the driveway once and talked to the owner about I lived there. He remembered us. I should've asked for a tour. He said the place is the same, no renovations which is crazy.

Ya,my aunt and uncke had the same attitude about usung the living room,and i met an older country neighbor man that let me go sit in " the parlor" for a moment! It must have been a thing in rural sw ontario! Stay out of the living room! Yet thats what us city kids new it was to be used!

It was just a mom thing, lol. She was British, so that might've had something to do with it.

Strangely compelling, I watched the whole thing. Odd the house had no value and was better off being demolished and turned back into a 'field' for whoever owned it? (Demolition has a cost) in the UK you're talking thousands, wonder why they bothered? Interesting video anyway

It's common around that area for new owners to demolish what we call century homes (i.e., built around 1900) as soon as it's permissible. I recall a neighbour's property was bought by a German immigrant family, and they demolished the house and barn. But they got into legal trouble with the bank because it affected the mortgage value. So the 100ft concrete grain silo remains standing two decades later! Ultimately, the land is valuable and the house is a maintenance nuisance. I'm surprised our house remained standing as long as it did.
