You did what we romanians call it "The perfect bite" with the sarmale. A little bit of everything: sarmale, sour cream and polenta. Like a true native romanian :). Next time try the "Bulz", because you picked the perfect restaurant for it.

Perhaps also mention that Orado/Grosswardein, was a major Jewish city until 1944, when the nazi's with the active help of The Hungarians and locals, deported all of the local Jews to Auschwitz. (My great grandparents and most of their children amongst them. I am here today only as my G/F was able to smuggle over to Rumania.) Cant ignore history!
@Twocantravel
@Twocantravel 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for sharing that history and about your family. Is there somewhere in Oradea to learn more about the Jewish history there?
@johny12391
@johny12391 2 жыл бұрын
@@Twocantravel While Orthodox Jews did heavily reestablish in Ukraine, Poland, Hungary, it is mostly in places with known cemeteries of famous leaders which attracts Jewish tourists from around the world. In places like ORADEA, As with towns like Khust (where my grandmother is from), Ruskovo (my wife's fam), Borsa (where my other grandfather is from), Gura Humorului etc. the years of communism left most former Jewish institutions in a horrific state! Most Jews in that area were poor and never bothered going back and looking for their lost houses. My own grandparents were heartbroken what their neighbors did to them during WW2, and discouraged and looking bad. Todays generation and the easy travel changed things. An exception in Rumania is Sighetu, where the NY Satmar community has heavily invested to rebuild cemeteries, synagogues and hotels. I often travel to these countries, but never bothered with my former hometowns, as those that did go said there's no point of visiting. The entire Maramureş was as todays Brooklyn, be it the parts under Hungary, Czechoslovakia or Rumania.

Hi guys! Really enjoyed your impressions of my home town. No doubt it's become an architecturally and culturally much more attractive city than it used to be, thanks to tremendous help by the European Union. Good thing you did not visit it in the not too distant past when it was under Communism and prior to that, Fascism, which plunged us all into WWII. I just want to add to another comment which mentioned Oradea's Jewish history. To enlighten Stevo, the beautiful building by the river with the cupola used to be a Reform Synagogue. Of course it's not currently functioning as such because Oradea's Jews, an estimated 25 to 30% of the city's population, were deported in late May and early June of 1944 to Auschwitz by the Hungarian authorities. The only survivors were those, like my parents, who could be used as slave laborers. All others, including children, perished in Nazi gas chambers. I am very proud of the contributions of Oradea's Jews to the city you rightfully so admired. Much of the architecture, culture and economic well-being the city enjoyed during the late 19th and early 20th centuries was due to its Jewish citizens. They were largely behind the construction of those beautiful Art Nouveau and Secessionist style buildings. Whenever I visit I make a point to go to the only still functioning synagogue, which is Orthodox (more observant), and only a few minutes walk from the Reform one. Jen and Stevo, loved your reporting!! Keep the good work!!

Thank you for your very thorough and enlightening comment. We appreciate the time you took to share about your family's history and the history of Jewish people in Oradea and all of their contributions to the city. I wish we could have learned more about the history of Jewish people in the city when we were there to appreciate it more. It's important to know the history of the places we visit! Hopefully people reading this comment can visit the Orthodox synagogue you mentioned.

a little bit better than Cluj but still sucks. the advantages : there are a lot of thermal springs, hot springs, thermal spa's (if you have money) and there are like those pies (i'm not sure how they call them) with potato and cheese inside disadvantages are that the majority of people are really close-minded and dumb , they don't speak foreign languages
