This video explores the environment and towns of Pine Mountain, Warm Springs, Manchester, and Woodland, Georgia. Situated about 40 miles north of Columbus, Georgia, this area became a favorite of former President of the USA, Franklin D. Roosevelt (RIP).
"In 1921, Franklin Roosevelt contracted a paralytic illness, diagnosed at the time as poliomyelitis (later thought in a 2003 peer-reviewed retrospective study to be Guillain-Barré syndrome. He tried to regain strength in his legs by bathing and exercising in the warm water. His first time in Warm Springs was October 1924. He went to a resort in the town whose attraction was a permanent 88-degree natural spring, but the Meriwether Inn was described as "ramshackle". He had a cottage built in 1932 that became famous as the Little White House, where Roosevelt lived while president, because of his paralytic illness. He died there in 1945 and it is now a public museum. Roosevelt first came in the 1920s in hopes that the warm water would improve his paraplegia. He was a constant visitor for two decades, and renamed the town from Bullochville to Warm Springs. The town is still home to the Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation (Roosevelt's former polio hospital) which remains a world-renowned comprehensive rehabilitation center including a physical rehabilitation hospital and vocational rehabilitation unit." - Wikipedia.org
A departure from the flatter or rolling hills of some of Georgia's farmlands situated in southern and middle Georgia, this route of about 80 miles / 133kms in length ascends 5,800 feet / 1,765 metres across rocky terrain that demands the attention of a rider at all times. This video is one where I really put the Cannondale Topstone Carbon Lefty to the test, more on that later in the coming review video.

The MCR would SMASH on the descents! Honestly, I wish I had one in my collection for those gnarly gravel rides I do on occasion.

AHHH Man! You didn't stop for those boiled peanuts. I'm sure your Ausie pals would enjoy seeing that. Great video. It makes me home sick. I lived in central Florida my whole life, now I live in the mid-west

Wesley Alth he also rode 7 Branches Rd into Warm Springs, and Nebula Road into to Manchester. What was/were the road(s) out of Pine Mountain and the dirt roads between Woodland and Pine Mountain? My brother lives in Manchester and I’m always looking for rides in the area.

Jeromie Spoken73 I have only ever ridden my road bike there and have only done around and up the mountain itself. My plan for next time is to actually kinda do what he did or do more climbs up the mountain.

Nothing personal, I'm riding solo during the Covid pandemic. Hopefully in the future if this mess ever clears up? I really enjoy the Pine Mountain area.

Is the gravel portion of the ride video, sped up ?

No doctoring of the video, I have a good amount of experience riding this terrain, particularly descending. With that said, there are riders who are far faster than I descending!

can i fit a 2x GRX crank? i heard the BB is quite wide and the 1x chainring is offset by 6mm?
@GravelCyclist
@GravelCyclist 4 жыл бұрын
You can fit a 2x GRX crank... there is definitely 6mm of offset on the rear wheel in terms of wheel dishing.

Nice video jom how did that lefty hold up and remember going through that water momentum can be your friend then again sometimes it can be your enemy .
@GravelCyclist
@GravelCyclist 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Bob, the Lefty is handy on tricky descents... I will cover that more in the review. I'm always careful of water crossings. I've seen far too many people destroy wheels, flat their tyre and so on, because they struck something unpleasant lurking beneath the water's surface.

If I remember correctly from previous videos you don't post links to the routes you ride, but can you share how you research routes? This is area is about 1.5 hours from Atlanta looks like a fun area to check out. How do you find gravel roads?

That’s not a very handsome bike in my opinion, but it looks like it gets the job done well enough. Quick question, I put 300 miles on my new panaracer sk gravelkings 700 38c tires and got a 2 cm slash across the top tread. Have you had luck patching those up from the inside or should a just buy a new tire?
@GravelCyclist
@GravelCyclist 4 жыл бұрын
Hello Gabriel... a 2cm slash is going to push the limits of most patches, even if patched from the inside. I've seen tyres form a lumpy bubble at the patch area once they are inflated to any sort of decent pressure. IMHO, I'd fork out for a new tyre. Good luck!
