The only thing is Democrats are the party of Slavery, KKK, Jim Crow segregation law's, and Margaret SANGER helped to put Abortion clinics in Black neighborhoods,to murder innocent babies! Millions of minorities murdered by abortion clinics n All of these evil people are Democrats! You need to actually study real History for yourself! Abe Lincoln was a Republican, he stopped Slavery!!!! Because we are all Created equal by the same GOD! All blue ran state's are ran by DEMOCRATS and they keep AMERICAN'S poor, on WELFARE! So many homeless, and poor kept that way on purpose,when you take self worth away from people, they have ZERO SELF-ESTEEM, and they have no reason to accomplish anything in life, taking SUCCESS AWAY FROM THE PEOPLE! And the left doesn't support the CONSTITUTION, they want all of our FREEDOM'S!

Plains, Trains and Jimmy Carter... Brian, thanks for this post and the entire production. I can see it took quite a bit of work; it was worth it! The voice-over is a nice variation to SSA series. My connection to Jimmy Carter is his second Presidential campaign and his effort to sustain threatened railroads and the communities that relied on them. As your piece mentioned, during the second half of the twentieth century, many railroads could no longer support locomotive trains & equipment, either financially or physically - the tracks, sleepers and trackway were simply wore out and could no longer safely carry locomotives or raise the money to renew. In 1980, Jimmy Carter’s administration thro’ Jack Sullivan, FRA Administration bought the first pre-production prototype of the Railbus LEV2 (Light Experimental Vehicle) that has since been developed into the Sprinter in U.K., from British Rail Research and British Leyland Special Vehicles. This vehicle was designed to operate on ‘life expired’ tracks and no degrade them further for a fraction of the cost of operating locomotives... My specialist rail vehicle company, D Wickham & Co got involved, to reduce the BRR/BLSV lead-time of 24 months down to 6 months, in time for the Railbus to operate in New England (Boston & Maine Railroad) in the run-up to his re-election for a second term and I was the project co-ordinator. Part of my job was to select the commissioning engineer to support the vehicle on it’s journey to US and stay with it for the next 6 months (Sep ‘80 - Feb ‘81). Duties of the commissioning engineer (guess who?!) include frequently travelling between Boston & Washington in a rental V8 Firebird (that managed to lose all its steel-wheeled hub caps and trim rings within the first 24 hours...) The vehicle itself and the project was very successful, but not enough to help Jimmy Carter or the American Railroad companies and President Reagan didn’t continue the project. LEV2 is resting in a railroad museum somewhere in the eastern US (when I last looked...) Whoever it is who has either already or will in the future dig deep enough under some of the body panels of LEV2, they will have found/will find some messages on the British take on the election prospects of both Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan later in 1980... Again Brian, thanks for this post and the opportunity for me to share my memories of Jimmy Carter!
@DTRBrianMallard

Jeffrey, thanks for the shared memories, that was fascinating! I'm very sorry the LEV2 didn't come to fruition, it would have been very cool. I remember in the 1980's when the train stopped coming through Waverly Hall, it was a sad time as I love trains. The track is a walking/jogging trail now, sad

Down The Road with Brian Mallard - thanks for your response & indeed your fellow commenters. I’m pleased to hear about your own channel and that you’ll still be very much a part of SSA. Yes, the LEV2 Railbus project was very exciting over too short a period, both for me and the project. Shorter still for experimental high-speed 4-wheel/2-axle rail vehicles as a means of bringing more sustainable railways from the 19th into the 21st century. Had these types of vehicles been able to enjoy continuous development, many of the communities you described suffering in your post might be in a lot better shape today thro’ preservation of a more contemporary & sustainable rail service for goods and people.
@jeffreynolds3848

Hey Gary Daniel! Thanks for taking the time to read my essay... Love your comments; very evocative and goes well with my vivid imagination! I’ll comment further after checking the places you mention, but in the meantime:- LEV2 Railbus was a neat project & I just happened to be in the right place (Railcar Production Mgr @ D Wickham & Co, Ware, 🇬🇧) at the right time (Jimmy Carter’s second term campaign) & had the most exciting 12 months of my whole career (so far...!) from Feb ‘80 to Feb ‘81. I love trains too, and talking of Amtrak, LEV2 was due to be towed by Amtrak from Virginia Newport News US Navy docks to Lowell, Mass. Boston & Maine workshop where LEV2 would the be unpacked & commissioned before trials & entering service. Except no-one considered how to get LEV2 from the rail line on the quay to the mainline station 5 miles across town to start the 1,000+ mile Amtrak tow... The problem was no locomotive could negotiate the No. 7 curves inside the docks & even LEV2, as a 2-axle/4-wheel was only designed for No. 5 curve. Even tho’ as Project Mgr who’d cheekily appointed myself Commissioning Engineer because of all the support I’d have from BRRD, BLSV & B&M engineers waiting for LEV2 & me in Boston, it was me that realised that the only way we were going to be able to get LEV2 out of the docks (and ‘save’ Jimmy Carter in the New England primaries...?!) was to commission LEV2 there on the quay and drive it across town... I’ll always remember me turning to the Commander of the base who’d got involved in this crisis by then, and me expressing my doubts and him saying back to me with a smile “...you’re forgetin’ - this is the US Navy, Jeff!” And so it turned out to be and a lot of fun & drama we all had in achieving that! When we didn’t think it was possible after that, driving LEV2 off the quay & across town was even more exciting and thrilling... The worse No.7 curves came first, tearing up (literally!) the inner flanges of the very old tracks & the flanges of the new wheels and over-heating the brand-new engine after having to push so hard thro’ the curves. When we got an airlock in the cooling system, it was me that got everyone to stand back and me go under the Railbus and do what up to then I’d only observed at a distance(!)... Nobody, NOBODY until today knew of the risk I took of scalding myself to death under that chassis frame, just to keep Jimmy Carter’s election prospects alive - LoL! LEV2 really shone thro’, however in not de-railing once and demonstrated just how radical, advanced and successful the 2-axle high-speed suspension design was. I can you, after this all-day effort to commission and negotiate the No 7 curves, we were almost hysterical with relief and that was before the fun of driving across town from the navy docks to the mailine station serving the northeast coast line. I’d never experienced anything like it before or since. The vehicle was still in all it’s trans-Atlantic export wrapping like a huge moving brown parcel with the barely noticeable front screen & 1st only of 12 window bays unwrapped. Having not been used for decades, all the road crossings in town from the docks to the station were closed by police cars & motorcycles! Like the base Commander, I’ll ever forget the sight as I sat in the cab driving LEV2 slowly for this 5 miles, of one of the FRA Administrators hanging out of the front entrance door right next to me whooping and hollering at all the open-mouthed onlookers of this strangest of apparitions... That’s more than enough! It’s been a long time since I had the opportunity to remember all this, although I only have to hear the name Jimmy Carter...

Just came across your channel few days ago and oh my goodness, makes me long to go back to my childhood 🤗. The rural Grayson Georgia...heck even snellville & lawrenceville wasn't to incorporated. The back dirt roads, farms, woods, all of it. The Coke machine reminds me of my first job. The hair shop I worked at with owner and one other lady. The owners husband was executive with coke. The best was pulling out coke, take swig and fill with pack of salted peanuts 😁. The fizz that came out...OMG. Tried with bottled coke recently and you don't get the fizz 😪. Did they sell Billy Beer at the gas station/museum? Used to have a can of his, don't know what happened to it. Wish had money and job, I'd move there in heartbeat...oh well.
