This was a movie I randomly picked up at redbox to watch with my dad. I had no idea what the hell it was and just picked it at random. To date, one of the best father-son movie times we've had.

This movie really cemented my respect for Paul Giamati and Clive Owen. It's a great movie that I could see being of lower quality if not for the great actors involved, and I could easily see how people who had attained their status might see a fun action movie as 'beneath them', and it's great to see them both ham it up with such charisma.

Now that the bizarrely overpraised Craig era is over, with the recent release of NTTD, this may a prime opportunity to dust off the idea of blue collar Bond, It may even have more resonance in the world in which we live today(Western intelligence couldn't put lipstick on the train wrecks of Afghanistan and Iraq, despite throwing several billion dollars at both)than it did in 2007

One of my all time favorite action movies, and one of my favorite movies of all time. Between the clever use of the soundtrack, the brilliant editing, the incredible cast, the dialogue, it all just plays so well together. The poor reception does not surprise me, as when I went to see it in the theater I was one of only a handful of people. I never gave much thought to the Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd tie in, but then again as much as this is one of my favorites I haven't seen it since it was on the big screen. I recommend this to all my friends, and every one I even casually meet that says they like action films. Definitely an under the radar, hidden gem classic.

This movie was so fucking fun, man. I’m all for movies and shows that are very grounded and serious, but not every one of them needs to be and this was the quintessential example of doing that right. It didn’t take itself overly serious and never pretended it was, and you had a blast being along for the rollercoaster as a result. I wish the director hadn’t taken the disappointing box office performance as hard as he did. It still did alright, and putting that aside he showed he really had a great mind for camera angles and shot composition and the flow of action sequences playing out. Would have loved to see much more from him, but at least we did get this gem.

Oh man, this is one of my all-time favorite movies to show people. I especially love it because they always have the same basic reaction every time. They spend the first half kind of enjoying it, but very puzzled and saying things like "I'm not sure if this is really great or really terrible." THEN the sex scene gunfight happens, and it just *clicks* and suddenly they love it. I'm almost glad that it's a little-known cult classic specifically because it's so much fun to show to people who have absolutely no idea what they're in for.

I actually went to this COMIC CON panel and liked this movie's presentation. The director came out smiling doing the jump side ways dual akimbo finger guns jump shooting for the presentation (lol). He sounded really hot to trot about the movie and as GOOD BAD FLICKS explained he said doing a heavy duty gunfighting action movie was his dream movie to do and was really really really glad that NEW LINE CINEMA wanted him to do the movie. From the presentation, it seemed like Clive Owen (yes he was there) was gung ho about the project. The director did mention that he gave Owen creative control like they would do a scene then Owen would be like "well i did like that take but maybe I could do this instead of this in this specific scene instead to make this scene much better?" The director did give approval on the changes and it seemed like there were no director and actor spats during the shooting of the movie. I know as far as the music is concerned the person responsible for music editing (or whatever) did do music editing for movies before and yeah did get approval for the use of those specific songs for the movie as mentioned in 8:45 - 9:04. The director felt he was in good hands as far as the music editing side of things is concerned. I know for the shoot out in the air I know it was done via green screen but Clive Owen actually did get some training for it since they filmed it around one of those parachute training machines that keep you up in the air. Owen was at first skeptical about doing it but did eventually have a blast doing it. Sadly Giamatti wasn't there for the presentation but was good to know Owen and the director were there for it and were quite passionate for the project. I agree it's a bummer what was the fate of the movie because I liked it myself and saw it the opening week (not the comic con special preview though which some people liked and were all positive about the movie) and saw it a second time in theaters and own it on DVD. I felt like this was the best of the last of NEW LINE CINEMAS NEW LINE CINEMA'S movies before the merger with WB which happened sometime after NEW YEARS EVE (I think that was the title of that movie). Sadly that movie tanked. I agree it's a bummer to hear the director may of went into obscurity because I think he said at the presentation he wasn't doing financially well and he and his wife were living in a van before working on SHOOT EM UP I think? I remember a good majority of the presentation at that years COMIC CON. Frankly I was hoping to see more of the guy because I liked SHOOT EM UP.

Guns as tools feels like quicktime events from fast-paced platforming sections in things like Tomb Raider or God of War, the carrots as an "eyesight powerup" to improve accuracy or notice puzzle clues in the environment, the army of mooks to mow through so you feel like a badass. . .

I love what Giamatti said about striving to be hated. Similarly, the first movie I ever saw Kathy Bates in was Misery and I haaaaaaated her as a person not just the character (I was in high school, gimme some slack)! But then her sympathetic role in Titanic and Mama Boucher in The Waterboy humanized her AND I realized that I had fallen under her spell as a top-tier actor.
@raeje
@raeje 4 жыл бұрын
There are a few actors who can do that - they pull off a villain role so well that I just start to hate the person until I see them in something else and remind myself that that was their character. Jack Gleeson and Lena Headey (Joffrey and Cersei in GoT) are another two great examples.

You see, I love how passionate you are about these films, you really seem to enjoy them. I don't get that from most reviewers and critics anymore, rather soulless reactions, mindless hate or blind praise. I love your channel for the same reasons I like Doug Walkers 'Honest Thoughts' videos more than his Nostalgia Critic ones- it shows a person just, talking about the ups and downs of a film, the work that went into it, the studio and directors influence, problems with the writing and actors, etc. It feels real, and I need that. I'm currently on the curricular track to writing scripts and storyboard, and so I NEED to maintain balance. I need reviews who I agree with and I need reviewers I disagree with, I need fans and haters in equal measures, because it forces me to look at a film fairly, draw a real opinion and remain capable of explaining WHY I hated the writing of MoS and BvS but liked The Avengers and Punisher War Zone. To be able to point out why despite being a overall BAD film, Dungeons and Dragons is one of my favorites and why, despite the overwhelming hate for it, I feel Fan4stic (horrible movie it was) could have been salvaged instead of being left as it was. Your channel gives me that. Plus, you're pleasant and actually talk about the literal making of the film instead of just the movie (Extra points from me for that). So yeah, I'm in, and hope your channel continues to grow, as I look forward to your next videos. Also, watch Book of Vile Darkness of you haven't already, it feels like the closest to a live D&D game and Verminlord is hilarious.

Thank you for disagreeing with me! lol In all seriousness, I don't expect everyone to agree with me all the time, that would be crazy. I just like to present (in my exploring or GBF videos) movies that I feel either got a bad rap when they came out, were overlooked or were messed up from within. I like talking about what went into these and showing how much work goes into even the "worst" of films. I think too many people just look for people to validate their opinions and are often angry when someone's views don't line up with theirs. I have friends who disagree with me all the time but we are still friends and often will get into (friendly) arguments over a movie's quality or lack thereof. I'm just a big movie fan and love talking about both the good and the bad within the industry, although I try to highlight the good more than the bad. (there is enough negativity out there already) Book of Vile Darkness never got an official release in the US, it only was shown heavily edited on Syfy. I keep forgetting I need to check it out. I really liked that they went and made an all evil D&D movie. Its an interesting angle that never would happen in a mainstream film. I may just import it and watch on my PC since it'll be region locked. Thanks for getting what the channel is and sticking around :)

I've heard tale that the Fantastic Four (2015, aka Fant4stic) failed due to a lack of commitment to the original vision. It's a pretty dark movie, by genre standards (superhero/action), with Dr.Doom's return seeing a terrifying villain boiling people's brains in their skulls - at the very least, people's heads burst open like they've been shot with a hollow point -, our weapons are useless, the lights go out, and a mess of corpses remains afterwards. Where Man of Steel's Superman vs Zod Battle is called too violent, much of that violence was implied by the scale of the destruction, where as Doom's March is almost akin to a Slasher Film with the gratuity of each person who dies. Furthermore, early trailers depicted more mature themes, such as a body on fire that'd reduced it to an ashen husk (as though burned from the inside out), implications that Ben 'The Thing' was in pain whenever he moved, the tortuous nature of trying to hold himself together for Reed. And the studio, the tale goes, got cold feet at the prospect of an R Rated Fantastic Four, dialed it back and watered it down. I'm sure it goes deeper, but anyone who wants to do actual investigation and add further detail to this is welcome to.

Thank you so much for this well-made research about a great film that needs more recognition.Even Roger Ebert did like this film giving it 3.5 out of four stars and he said "What elevates it from the depraved to the deserving is a sense of style, a sense of warped humor and the acting".

Severely underrated and VERY overlooked. I ONLY got to see it because I was at a blockbuster (lmao what's that?) and was in the mood for an action film and just kiiiinda took a chance and went with this.... I was immediately laughing at how absurd and entertaining the film is and a LOT of it for me, has to do with Paul Giamatti's performance in it. I have it on bluray and I'm VERY happy it was made, def a fantastic action fest with no bullshit in it.

I love this video. I loved the film already. So to see someone do it justice the way you did here, it's just a joy. If I could only see five films from each decade (not counting Dolph Lundgren movies), this makes the list.
