In all these Exploring episodes, I've noticed that the most of these movies have one thing in common: the studios always wants to fix things that aren't broken and manages to screw up the movie.

"Someone who thinks they know what's best for everyone else." Perfect description of the studio in this and many cases. :\

I love Disturbing Behaviour, but it is incredibly frustrating to know that it could've been so much better if the director's cut had actually been released. Still, I think this is an underappreciated gem and even with the drastic cuts, you can get the vibes of what the director wanted it to be.

Katie Holmes seems to have a knack for playing characters named Rachel.

It is simple, the reason why execs are willing to change a good film when the majority of the audience likes it is greed. They think by changing just a few things that they will magically get 100% of the audience to love it. You will never get 100% of an audience to love a movie no matter how good it is.

He should just pull a Ryan Reynolds and "leak" the movie he made.

I feel the studio realizes their mistake in releasing the theatrical cut instead of the film in it's entirety . I do think instead of just owning up, they double down and didn't want admit they fucked up.

This movie always makes me miss the 90's..

Disturbing Behavior is one of my favorite movies from the 90's. Endlessly quotable movie "rats! Rats from the bay" "every time one of these kids get a hard on they go beat some one with it" "someone queue the power ballad" "it's bad, it's wrong, it's wrong, it's bad" " what the hell is a yogurt shop-pee" "be the ball"...and on and on. Amazing soundtrack btw- Harvey Danger's Flagpole Sitta and The Flys- Got You to name a few, were huge hits because of this movie.

Studio execs remind me of an episode of Frasier where they hold an audience test for his show and everyone but one guy likes him, and Frasier basically stalks the guy desperate to find out why this one person disliked him. Just the fact the majority of the audience loved the original and they're like "But this one dude didn't, let's change it!" Part of me wishes I could get into test screenings for movies and just become a troll now. "So what are your thoughts on Black Panther?" "I dunno, can we make it more about Iron Man? Marvel movies don't have enough Iron Man."

This is still one of my favorite movies of all time. The cast, cinematography, locations, and score are all perfect. I still love it. I wish that we could get a directors cut.

Ironically, the bane of filmmaking is studio execs.... fucking suits. How many good films were turned into crap at their behest we'll never know. Not that this movie was ruined, but still cut to shreds, and I think I would prefer the uncut version.

Lol, coming into this I was thinking "this could be the first time that executives actually helped a film, that's good to know they aren't always wrong and some oversight is needed in the movie Indu..." Then they decided to take apart a movie the majority liked. "YOU WILL NEVER EARN MY PRAISE EXEC'S!"

This is such an underrated film. I actually prefer the extended cut versus the theatrical version, especially due to the original ending which fits the tone of the movie much better than what ended up being in the theatrical version.

They don't want the Director's Cut released because that would show how badly they screwed up.

Wow, 'Shout Factory' couldn't get the rights for a director's cut? Shout Factory? Who managed to release MST3K on DVD and give us the director's cut of 'Nightbreed'? One of the producers must have hidden a murder confession in the director's cut, it's the only explanation.

Love the irony of that last line. But seriously if someone with Nutter's cache, talent, credits, connections and pull can't fight the studios and win, I think I'll stick with the Indie world. (Oh and Nutter, The Red Wedding, still hurts man.)

The studio's behaviour here just makes me so incredibly angry. What the hell do they have to gain by not allowing the Director's Cut to appear on a blu ray release all these years later?

Still love this movie. Dying to see that director’s cut. I do remember seeing this for the first time on tv and either the USA Network or SyFy played it with the deleted scene of Mr. Newberry telling the story of the drunk driving incident

The closest thing I ever got to see in a director's cut was when the USA Network aired what they called the "director's cut" back in early '00. They showed a lot of the little scenes with Embry alongside the Caldicott daughter speech scene and Newberry's explanation of what happened 3 years prior. I was glad I taped it coz man... that extended version was so good. You could tell some care went into this version because the scenes that were deleted were of the same quality as the rest of the movie and not like how the deleted scenes on the dvd looked like.

Another film that had so much potential, but in the end was butchered by the studio ignorance is certainly bliss with them!

Your series has given me a totally new appreciation for character actors. Your attention to detail and love for these actors puts them on a pedestal they rightly deserve.

I didn't mind this movie actually quite enjoyed it , but Smallville , Arrow and Roswell are things of my nightmares.

This seems to be a recurring theme: _"Studio execs removed scenes because..."_ & the movie gets ruined. Makes me wonder how many shitty movies would've bee great had the dumb-ass, out of touch, studio-exec reptiles let the directors *DIRECT* their own fucking movies & just stay out of their way. It's kind of tragic to think about.

This is flick is on my top 10 of best cult movies of the 90's. This movie introduce me to "Flagpole Sitta".

I've always mistakenly recalled this movie being a hit, and a pretty big deal when it came out in 1998. I think that's largely because it had two big hit songs on it's soundtrack that got played day and night on MTV at the time. Surprised you didn't mention that.

I thought I was the only person who remembered this movie. This made me a fan of Nick Stahl. And I always thought it was funny that James Marsden looks older in this than he does now. "Appropriate sparks are flyin, somebody cue up the power ballad man"

Producers: “ We like the movie, is great!” Director: “Nice!” Producers: “But we also want you to change practically everything and if you don’t do it we’ll have someone else do it”

Damn Studios can really fuck over a film. Why is there never any protest against them?

I was never a fan of the teen horror trend post-Scream, but out of all of those movies, this one I kinda liked. Seeing this, with the clips and descriptions of what was cut out of the Director's Cut, I KNOW that had this movie been released complete, I would've LOVED it! Another example of corporate suits THINKING they know best for everybody else... hehe, kinda like the villain in this movie!!!

Studio fucks up another good movie again. I remember seeing this when it first came out, and it didn't make much sense, and was very fast paced. Now I know why. Thanks for another great retrospective. I've come to see so many movies that I watched in my youth in a different light, because you uncover why they may not have made sense, were too choppy and quick, etc. Keep up the good work.

I really love that you shine a light onto interesting films which are otherwise (usually unfairly) neglected. I was in my teens when this came out in theaters and what I personally distinctly remember most is the trailer used Harvey Danger's great song, "Flagpole Sitta". Keep up the great work (random bit: one of your unscripted-videos mentions Centralia PA, which sparked a really interesting conversation between myself and a few friends who grew up near there- Shamokin PA- (sp...?) and have also visited many times) (we're all in Philly now)

I love this channel because I have a few of these movies on DVD..the potential for them to be classics are there, and you can tell someone behind the camera knew what they were doing.

Hearing of this review, pisses me off in that the studio didn't even allow director David Nutter to put both cuts on the Blu-ray version? The studio's theatrical cut and his director's cut. Incompetence like this is makes you wonder who are all these idiots who make these crappy decisions and why do they wield they power they have, so stupidly??!

Just watched your video, 2 years ago I bought this book written by John Whitman based on the screenplay of Disturbing Behavior. It holds all the scenes that you mentioned were cut, like Newberry explaining what happened with the four kids, Steve spying on one of Dr. Caldicott’s speeches at the school and the ending is Gavin dying, with Rachel, U.V. and Steve getting away, but there’s this girl named Shannon who was Steve’s sister’s friend... This girl is at a spelling bee and you can read that she’s got the flash in her eye. I heard there were different endings to the movie and I guess this was one of them. The book is pretty good, it sets the mood better than the movie and you can find it for fairly cheap, I believe. It’s only a 188 pages long and depicts Steve’s struggle with fitting in pretty well, you see he doesn’t really want to be friends with Gavin, but he feels he doesn’t relate to the Blue Ribbons, and he considers himself a “jock” like them. The whole thing feels so very different from the movie. In the movie you don’t really feel much for the characters, you feel like you’re not understanding what’s happening properly, but the book makes it clear and I appreciate that. Just thought I’d write this, in case you or anyone would like to buy it. I don’t know if it contains the unreleased scenes, maybe it does, I haven’t thought of comparing the two. I have a hunch it might, there are things from the book I can’t say I recall in the movie, like Steve finding files, him going to Caldicott for a consultation, Steve going on a field trip to the hospital where they go to the morgue and so much more. Since there’s so much of it, I feel John Whitman added all that to make it more coherent, but I don’t know.

I saw this film in the theater, and it was one of my first owned dvds upon release. I love it, and I am obsessed with it's potential, and have bored many with long rants after sharing the couch with viewing parties, about what could of been. and once upon a time in community theatre, I performed Steve's extended/deleted full monologue about his brother from the film. To this day, anytime the movie enters my conscious I immediately become a frustrated fan of why I cannot watch this intended cut. I was very relieved to see you had put this video together, and others, showing the community what went factually wrong in production. Now I can save my breath, and link them to this in the future. ONE NOTE: I do NOT believe SHOUT Factory had any intention or made any effort to restore the original cut, because after announcing it, others and I immediately questioned what exactly we were going to receive on the disc, and now I cannot find my inquiry, but you can still see one answer they gave to the question of the director's cut in the comment section their Bluray page... "Hi Mark--if it wasn't finished, it probably wasn't available to us at all." Which infuriated me and obviously others, because of the dull release they did deliver. Anyway, it's their fault we still don't have it, haha. Keep up the good work.

I went to see this in the theatre when it came out. I haven't seen it since then but remember liking it. And thought there was going to be a sequel.

I saw this in the theater and never again, but I still remember it. Quite a memorable film for me.

I just saw Disturbing Behavior. I'd have loved to see a sequel because it was so set up from Gavin surviving and possibly being a new recruiter for the Blue Ribbons. Also, movie producers and directors need to trust themselves more. Expositional dialog isn't always unnecessary and cringe. The janitor telling Steve the truth about the Blue Ribbons would have explained so much and made the audience feel closer to him.

Fantastic breakdown of one of my favorite movies from that time. Even the soundtrack had issues. The most popular song in the movie/trailers, Harvey Danger's Flagpole Sitta, was not even available on the soundtrack! Seriously wish I would have known you were doing this movie. I would have given a kidney to be apart of this review.

I just watched it on vhs for the first time and this video explains exactly what I was feeling. It’s like they stripped it down to a series of moments and the story got curbed.

I know ive said this before but your channel is so ME. This is one of my all time favourite movies.... I can tell you probably love the Faculty.

I knew the North Dakota scene would be the one at the end. that part has NEVER failed to bring a smile to my face.

One of my favorite films, and the one that introduced me to Michelle Skalnik, who is my all-time biggest crush. It was heartbreaking when I read she passed away in 2004. Getting back to the film itself, I've messaged Arrow Video encouraging them to release this, preferably the director's cut if possible. The more people who message them, the more likely it'll be.

Very interesting video, as always! Man, I know this movie for a long time, since I read years (no decades! at this time I was a kid!) ago in a TV-newspaper about it. But to this day I've never seen it. Maybe because mind control is a topic that always frightened me and I feel not comfortable watching movies and series that contain it. Or, it was. I'm adult now. :D You reminded me to watch it. I didn't know that it was changed from the studio so much (one more reason to hate studio-executives) and now my expectations went a little down. But I'm still excited. I mean, this movie got Cyclops and John Connor in it, before they were known! ^^ And a director from "The X-Files" and "Game Of Thrones" (didn't knew that about David Nutter; in fact, before this video I knew nothing about him)! Fun fact: the german title of the movie is (translated): "We'll Get You Too!" Do you think, this fits it better or not? Anyways, keep up the great work! :)

I love this movie and now I really wish I could see the director's cut. Shout factory appeals to film nerds and collectors. Mainstream audiences rarely buy physical media anymore. I wish the studio would have allowed Shout to release the director's cut. I wasn't able to buy that bluray before it went out of print but now I realize that what I have on the dvd is pretty much the same. Thanks for another great video!

Goddamn idiot executives, cutting material from the film that originally enhanced it. Now the deleted footage looks poorly and badly needs restoration. Something of course which cost lots and lots of money! Seriously if i were nutter i'd have told the studio to go f-'em themselves up the ass. Hearing of David Nutter's treatment by the studio, makes me appreciate George Lucas, Lucas being his own man as an example here. Setting up Lucasfilm back in the day. Who previously owns his own movies/Studio and didn't answer to the Hollywood studio's flawed system! Have known about the "Disturbing Behavior" deleted scenes, for years but the DVD was very hard to come by, back in the day on 'Region 1'. This review has me wanting to order the updated Blu-ray version now, so well done and thank you. Excellent review!
