EXPLORING SURABAYA, Indonesia 🇮🇩 | AMERICANS Try INDONESIAN FOOD (Es Teler) for the FIRST TIME

Join us as we spend a full day exploring the beautiful city of Surabaya! We begin the day with a delicious savory breakfast at Depot Anda Fit. Jonathan has been waiting excitedly to try their oxtail soup (Sop Buntut). The rest of us enjoyed a variety of hearty, Indonesian breakfast choices, as well. The food there was delicious, but I think we all agree that the staff at this restaurant made this meal especially memorable.
Once our bellies were sufficiently full, we decided to explore the famous Surabaya Submarine Monument (Monumen Kapal Selam). This is a must-see! It doesn’t take that long to tour the submarine, but we were very impressed with all the knobs and wheels in a submarine. We really felt like we gained a greater appreciation for anyone who has lived on a submarine.
We ended our day of exploration with mouth-watering Indonesian desserts called Es Teler, Es Campur, and Buah at Es Teler Pacarkeling, a popular roadside restaurant. These are vibrant desserts that consist of a variety of fresh fruits, noodles, avocado, syrups, and jellies all mixed with shaved ice. It is the perfect treat on a hot, humid day.

We are the Bags Packed Family: Jonathan and Kelly with our three children. We sold our home in Alaska, USA, eight years ago, and headed overseas. We are teachers and found fantastic teaching positions in Chennai, India. Two years later, we moved to the United Arab Emirates. People usually eat that oxtail soup with rice though, you put the broth on top of the rice with spoon, take one piece of the oxtail and some veggies with it and put them on the rice, then eat the oxtail with the rice soaked in broth

in bahasa indonesia, we have two things for the crunchy light snack thingy. "kerupuk" and "keripik" keripik = chip. like potato chip, cassava chip, etc. kerupuk = cracker. some puffy airy oily light snack thing. the popular delicious one is the prawn crackers, but the normal and abundance ones are just the normal salty kerupuk that sometimes with color(food coloring). and on that table in the beginning of the video are indeed, all kerupuk. but probably there are some emping there. edit: and there is a third category. it's "emping". it's made from the "melinjo seed". idk in English. but it's like in the category of chip/keripik there. but it's different from regular chips. edit2: "paha atau dada" means "breast or thigh". it's a small miscommunication there. but it's okay. just a chicken part. not too big. edit3: 20:44 the left is for the submarine monument ticket, the right is for the swimming pool ticket

First of all welcome to Surabaya, the red jelly one in the ice is called kolang kaling it's the fruit of nipah palm tree, but being boiled in red syrup, while the black jelly is called cao is a grass jelly, made from squishing grass jelly grass with water, after that the mixture of the grass jelly water will be coagulated over time becoming jelly, while the black color is come from charcoal, edit: sorry is not nipah palm tree fruit but aren palm tree fruit, but both fruit are edible and have jelly like texture

This is some phrases to learn for Kelly. Since she’s vegetarian you can say “Saya tidak makan daging (I don’t eat meat).” Or “Saya vegetarian.” If you want to ask “Is there any meat?” -> “Apa ada daging?” Or “Apa pakai daging?” To ask about vegetable “Is there any veggie?” -> “Apa ada sayur?” I think these are the easiest way to say when you order. If you ask for recommendation “Minta rekomendasi.” Or “Ada rekomendasi?” So they can recommend their dish to you 😊

Seeing this submarine, I remember the Indonesian navy submarine is sank in Bali Strait about 2 years ago, the US defense minister said it was very risky to save the submarine because the Bali Strait was very deep and swift, making it difficult to save the ship😔

OMG what you said is Es TelUr. I wonder what it is, you should said Es Tel'E'r. Telur is Egg, Teler mean drunken. (Because the Es Teler has tape, which fermented casava, which smell like wine)

What is the different betwen the three is the what she put inside. Es Buah means Fruit Ice dessert, insade it of course many kind of fruit. Es Campur mean Mixed Ice dessert, the put everything inside (avocado, jackfruit, coconut, jeligrass, kolang-kaling {the red one that kelly wonder}, mutiara {the one that chedar eat}, etc). Es Teler means Drunken Ice dessert, the famous one called "Es Teller 77", the indregrient is jackfruit, coconut, tape (fermented casava) black grass jelly.

Halo Jonathan, nice to meet you and your warm family. I try to explain about submarine diesel electric class (KRI Pasopati pennant number 410). KRI Pasopati, the Indonesian Naval Ship is namely KRI, simillar with US Navy is mentioned USS, derived from Soviet Union submarine (Whiskey class submarine). She was a class of diesel-electric attact submarine that the Soviet Union built in the early cold war period in 1955 and commisioned as Soviet Union Navy 1956. She is one of twelve vessels delivered to the Indonesian Navy in 1962. She was involved in Trikora Campaigne in 1961. She was used to transport marines and arms to the Indonesian navy in West Irian 1962 along side with another submarine. She was retired in 1994 after more than 30 years of service, disassembled and moved to a spot near Plaza Surabaya in 1998 and preserved as museum.

Jonathan, you kept saying 'es telor' instead of 'teler'. Telor, the common pronunciation of telur means egg. That's why they're confused. Whereas teler actually means drunk or high, referring to how you feel after you eat the ice.

You should try RAWON while in Surabaya. It is a very popular beef soup and it was just chosen as the best soup in the world according to food atlas. The famous place to try RAWON is at Rawon Setan at Embong Malang street in Surabaya.

Just watching few of your videos in surabaya and that’s awesome, not many foreigners dare to eats street food as they might get stomach aches and bloating (hope you all don’t get that) and with the food that you guys eating is our everyday and any time we can eating. About the es teler, es campur and es buah all slightly similar, just the fruits that they put in is different. The clear noodlely is actually jelly, the orangy thick fruit is called Blewah same as green melon just different variety, the red jelly fruits is actually the same as the one that you guys eating in jakarta called Lontar just small one and the surabayan peoples called kolang kaling or sugar palm which in philipines called kaon. The brown jullien cuts is called sapodilla fruit and you are right about the yellow slightly orangey fruit called jack fruit. Indonesia has one of the best 24 hours food in the world and each city’s has their own food and sometimes similar with other city but the taste is different. The submarine monument (monkasel - for monumen kapal selam) price is Rp 15K showed on the left side and Rp.10k on the right it said swimming pool (kolam renang) fyi. The submarine was built from Russia and used by 🇮🇩 navy in ‘trikora operation’ to take back West Irian from the Dutch. Great video and gotta ❤ oxtail soup!

Indonesian language has similiraty with german, spanish, italian, tagalog et. if you pronounce the A I U E O vowels.For example. Surabaya (Like Susu : Surabaya not Sarabaya) or Depot (not Dipat) Just like when you say Nasi, Sambal, Manis, Tempe, Soto, Gula, Susu. And try to roll your tongue if you say words with R like Air, Jeruk etc. Love you guys so much.
