The name “Talos” has significant meaning in Greek mythology. It is derived from the ancient Greek word “talo”, which translates to "sun". Before machine learning and autonomous vehicles, ancient Greeks were fascinated by tales of the bronze automaton Talos and the artificial woman Pandora, both creations of the god Hephaestus. Adrienne Mayor, a research scholar, traces the concept of lifelike artificial beings back to these myths from about two thousand and seven hundred years ago. Talos, a bronze giant made by Hephaestus and commissioned by Zeus, protected Crete by patrolling thrice daily and throwing boulders at invaders. He was powered by a divine substance, ichor, flowing within him. Mayor asserts that our ability to conceive artificial intelligence and robots has ancient roots, predating the technological capability to create self-operating machines. The story of Talos, recorded by Hesiod around seven hundred B.C., is among the earliest robot depictions.
