I love Stony Valley. In April the spruce and hemlock trees explode with scent. Best time of year to hike there. The incredible boulder fields are amazing. The area is named correctly. Lots of bears in the area. Scat is visible on every trail.

Cliff, I am always amazed at how much physical labor went into building those "towers and the retaining walls. WE have no idea today of the level of human exertion taken for granted in those days. Why walk if you don't have to, or open a can with a manual opener etc. Weren't too many obese people at that time! Thanks for another trip into the past. Cheers, Rik Spector

Great hike Cliff! It is kinda melancholy to see as time passes how nature and the elements take their toll on these structures. God Bless..

Great video Cliff. I often wonder if those old stone foundations and old chimney stacks could talk, what stories they could tell us. So much history. Thanks for sharing.

Nice look at the area. We section hiked that part of the AT about 2 months ago and stayed at the yellow springs campsite. Beautiful area you had great weather to be out.

I would definitely would second the idea of revisiting those ghost towns with historians. archeologists, etc and maping out those towns and putting out some histories of those places. Chances are some of the descendants of the residents of those places would be interested in such a project

This is great. I love to find ways to make a loop hike and include sections of the AT. I did a fun loop yesterday starting at Riverview Park in Bowmanstown off of routes 248 and 895. It used several trails: the Double G Loop, the Chestnut Oak Trail, the Prairie Grass Loop, the LNE Trail, the Three Ponds Trail and the D and L Trail. It was quite fun with the wet snow too. And the misty was epic. I have to get out to this trail though. Thanks for taking us along!

Coming down steep inclines is harder on my knees than a steep climb. If I ever have the opportunity to hike that loop, I would probably take the Sand Springs trail up and the gradual descent of the Stone Tower trail on the return. It's nice to have intel like that so thanks!

I hiked the Stone Tower/General loop last year (counter-clockwise). I would say it was one of the toughest hikes I have done! But it is peaceful and rewarding. Thanks for the great video.

You know, whenever I watch shows about excavating "ancient" ruins, where the ruins of dwellings are under layers of earth, I think "how can that be? Did the people just walk off? How was it forgotten in such a way you have to dig to find it?" And here you go. This video shows how it happens. Another few hundred years no one will be walking around talking about it. 500 years? Covered over completely? So interesting. Thanks for your video.

Interesting place up there. Quite a hike that is. The sky is particularly beautiful and of course the trees are at their best..That setting awakens the imagination. The details brought forth about the setting's history can't help but enhance the pleasant vibe .

Usually what is referred to as an incline ( incline plane ) is a cable system on tracks built to use the loaded mine cars to pull the empties that were offloaded onto rail cars back up the mountain. Bradford county history books show pictures of a couple used on Barclay Mountain during the coal mining era.

I have a picture of a coal minning town taken around the turn of the 20th century and what it shows is a row of small 2 story log houses with exterior stone chimnies, I wonder if thats what was at Yellow Springs

15 years since i been up there. But I recall there being the spring that was yellow, (surfer) Old piece of construction equipment, and what was left of a church. I could be mistaken for different spot on the AT.

You can take your dogs there. There are a lot of bears and coyotes in the area, in addition to beaver swamps. Having a canine along tends to limit wildlife sightings.

Nothing. The Standing Stone Trail club had an issue with hunters painting over blazes and destroying trail signs a few years ago in SGLs.
