Title: "Exploring the Genius of Dr. Milton H. Erickson, Part II: The Utilization Approach"
Presenter: Dr. Jeffrey Zeig
Description: In this second installment of Dr. Jeffrey Zeig's exploration of Dr. Milton H. Erickson's singular genius, Dr. Zeig will focus on the psychotherapy master's use of utilization.
Dr. Erickson is rightfully known as the inventor and innovator of numerous psychotherapy techniques. He also is famous for the creativity he employed in hypnosis and psychotherapy. He was able to tailor each therapy session to the uniqueness of the individual client; it can be said that he invented a new approach for each patient.
Central to this creativity and personalization was Dr. Erickson's mastery of utilization, whereby he would accept and validate his clients' particular perceptions and problematic behavior and then utilize them as valuable resources to facilitate the therapy.
In this lecture, Dr. Zeig will use case vignettes to define and illustrate the use of Erickson's utilization approach.
Learning Objectives:
Attendees will gain an understanding of the basic principles and definition of the utilization approach.
Attendees will be able to understand and describe the utilization approach as a therapeutic "posture."
Given a patient, attendees will be able to indicate three possibilities to utilize in order to advance therapy goals.
Bio:
Dr. Zeig is the founder and director of the Milton H. Erickson Foundation, having studied intermittently with Dr. Erickson for more than six years. He is the architect of the Evolution of Psychotherapy Conferences, widely regarded both as the world's largest and its most important conferences on psychotherapy. He also organizes the Brief Therapy Conferences, the Couples Conferences, and the International Congresses on Ericksonian Approaches to Hypnosis and Psychotherapy. The author, co-author, or editor of more than 20 books, Dr. Zeig maintains a private practice in Phoenix, Arizona and is a frequent and in-demand speaker at major universities and teaching hospitals around the world, including the Mayo Clinic, the Menninger Clinic, and MD Anderson.
This is a presentation of the School of Behavioral Sciences at California Southern University.

It is great to have these live presentions with Dr. Zeig. In the past, the work of psychotherapy figures used to be very secretive and confined. Thanks for sharing this.

I have always wondered why as a child I knew things yet didn’t consciously know them in such a way as to reckon with them and act on them. Your phrase about ‘land of knowing …land of realising’ most helpful. Is what I experienced the result of ‘denial’ or of ‘fear (of Abandonment, loss of face/love ‘ or a defence against unwanted feelings of anger or wretchedness’.

Excellent I think hypnosis should of been made mainstream for NHS years ago in UK but there is a problem there is no money in wellness! So it is an illusion that they want you to be healthy quickly or rather at a low cost, ie they want people on ‘ extensions’ such as anti depressants, not ‘ interventions’ such as talking therapies etc

Am I the only one who was disturbed by the case of Kathy and how it's essentially claiming that self-esteem can be restored by flattering a woman's looks, sexualizing her and telling her she would make a lovely wife? Is that the Ericksonian view of what a woman's self-esteem should be founded upon? This might help some on a superficial level for a short amount of time, but it does not get to the roots. I hope I just misinterpreted the message of that case though, maybe someone can enlighten me.

Interesting. I Think we dont know the context. If you read more - like “uncommon therpapy”. _ you Will see that the bigger pattern is. He uses the patients understanding to expand and enrich the world. I heard the same clip and I heard him helping her to see the possibility that she could look WITHOUT “buying” a man. She was free to leave. At that time im sure women evaluated themselves as housewives. This could be the first step to emancipation....

I agree. He said Dr Erikson also tried to interest him romantically in another patient. I found that quite disgusting. Perhaps it is just a sign of the times (1970s).

It’s a part of Ericsson’s approach. If you look at a man from the 70’s through the eyes of a woman in the 21st century, then you’re only going to see problems...

Milton was a genius but not perfect. It was a different world back then and probably roots to his own belief system. But context does matter and we dont know the full context.

a woman can have her self-esteem restored by having her looks flattered and sexualizing her and indicating that she would make a lovely wife. you are a coping zombie if you think otherwise. this is as true today as it was in the 1970s or whenever the situation is from. the only reason you make a comment like this is to signal that you bought into the lie that society shoves down everyone's throat and destroys anyone who tries to resist it. you are not revolutionary, you are not fighting a david vs goliath type struggle. you are "the man", you are "authority". you are told otherwise and are too stupid to see the cage that they put you in. or perhaps you do see the cage but have grown to love its bounds. pathetic.

only 6 emotions? 'states'. an unrealistic way to live emotions are not feeling, states are fleeting creating dissociation is so cruel 'dramatic' what has any of this got to do with mental health diagnosis, treatment, this is a nonsense
