The Roma-Lido railway is an urban railway line connecting the Porta San Paolo Station in Rome to Lido di Ostia, Rome's seaside neighborhood. The railway is 28.3 km (17.6 mi) long, stops at 13 stations, and carries on average over 90,000 passengers per day. The line, despite having the characteristics of a mainline railroad, is operated with the same rolling stock operated on the Rome metro. Enjoy this look at a very interesting operation!

I never thought I'd say this but the MTA should go over there to give them advice on how to fight graffiti on the trains. If there is one thing that the MTA has gotten right over the past 30 odd years is how to keep the rolling stock nearly totally graffiti free. I guess Italian rail yards and layover tracks aren't fenced off or patrolled as much.

Graffiti issues are nothing now in Rome compared to 7-8 years ago... the metro, additionally, is much cleaner too now! (or at least the Lines B and C stations are, idk about Line A because last time I went on line A was in June 2013 lol)

After the line has been handed to COTRAL, there are much less graffiti.

Or take the Berlin approach and put stickers of the roman collosseum (instead of the brandenberg gate) all over the trains

The reason why this line is in such a bad shape is because, even if it's entirely located inside Rome's municipal boundaries and even if it used to be operated by Rome's municipal transport company Atac, it's owned by the Lazio region (which Rome is part of), instead of the municipality itself, like all the trams and metro lines. In the last years those two institutions have been ruled by politicians of different parties, who didn't like each other at all, and kept blaming each other over who had to pay for the maintenance of the line and rolling stock, using its decay as a way to gather votes. The Lazio region recently decided to take the line away from Atac to give it to its own transport company Cotral (which lacks any experience in operating railways) instead, citing Atac's incompetence: this was mainly a publicity stunt, as Atac never got the money from them to operate it properly. As of now it seems like two new stations building sites, abandoned for years, have restarted. Cotral has repainted an old train in its own livery, without any major refurbrishment, but with some media coverage. Workers are protesting due to the new shifts imposed by Cotral: I don't know who's right on this diatribe as (ex-) Atac workers tend to be really over-syndacalized, but as there are very few available trains it's impossible for now to increase the train frequency. New trains won't be available for years. My personal opinion on this matter is that this bureaucratic nightmare should end immediately: this line should be transferred to the Rome municipality to become a real metro line, connected to the Jonio branch of line B through central Rome, to which it's already connected. As the loading gauge of the two lines are slightly different, some modifcations would have to be made to the platforms and overhead wires, or purpose-built trains would need to be ordered. Having a line that looks and works exactly as a metro line but is not due to historic circumstances is a total nonsense.

This line is now beeing operated by the company "Cotral", which is a abbreviation for Compagnia Trasporti Laziali or in english Public transportation company Lazio. Due to the massive problems on the line in the time beeing operated by Atac, Cotral also having some problems, but they are trying to make it better: now you can find cancellations also in the app, there are track works from monday to friday in the night and trains getting modernized.

Cotral taking over operations of the Roma-Lido railway in my opinion was a huge mistake, for something that is effectively a metro line running entirely within the city of Rome. As you rightly pointed out, why not integrate the Roma-Lido railway as part of a branch of Metro line B instead, extending to either Jonio or Rebibbia? Ah yes, the usual incompetency of Italian politics sadly. I say that as I'm half Italian myself lol (and I come from a village just about 170 km away from Rome too!) Cotral should instead run regional and rural local bus services within the Lazio region, and I'd add, they should also consider running town routes within major towns like Viterbo or Cassino.

@@gabrielstravels Finally, with the operation taken over by COTRAL, the service has vastly improved. Trains and stations are much cleaner (every train is cleaned regularly during the day), there is much more surveillance (not good for filming), and the wayfinding (who used to be catastrophic) has been updated. Some long term improvements have also been annonced. Let's se how it will go.

I am aware of this since I ride it every single Saturday. It’s sad to think that there were more trains, less delays and overall the railway being in better shape. I really hope more trains come since you need to wait 15 - 30 minutes for one train… I miss those old days!!

Went on this, from Ostia Antica to EUR Magliana. Always wondered why this was never a branch of Metro Line B, considering it's metro characteristics
@lavillenouvelle
@lavillenouvelle 10 ай бұрын
Apparently, it's not a branch of Metro B because there are a lot of people going to EUR, and they need all trains to go to Laurentina in order to satisfy the demand (EUR is a major employment center). From 1956 to 1986, this was indeed a branch of Metro B, but at the time, much less people worked in the EUR.

Uber cool looking rolling stock. I like the low angles and tilt and audio. So much more interesting than posed tripod shots with perfect and identical pans. We all want good transit but do we really want bland uniformity? I am grateful such a line like this exists for us to discover. The king of this genre of rapid transit is the Naples Circumvesuviana (on my channel).

There's a serious drought restriction in Italy curtailing washing of vehicles. Not sure if this is why.
@LucaPasini2

@@patleung4176 It's not: the reason why this line is so derelict is because of a conflict between the Lazio Region who owns it and the Rome municipality who used to operate it until a few months ago. I've tried to explain the matter in another comment.
