I have both tha Large and the small Fellow at home. The large is not a good brewer for small brews. It shines then you brew above 400 grams ( I use it for 450-500g). If you want to make a small brew then use the small brewer it is good for 200-350g. Above 350 g is has a very slow flow rate. When you use the small brewer you have a lot more control over the brew. I also stir with a spoon during the brew. That is something I don't seemed necessary with the April brewer or Kalita 155 but it helts with the coffee getting stocked in the waves of the filter. You can also use Kalita 155 or Aprils own filters in it witch I would recommend. The April filter is thinner a easier to work with. I like the video but thing the base parameter of reviewing a large brewer and brew a small batch it a strange choice.

Nice review as always. I use the Stagg [X} (the smaller one) and have enjoyed using it, I switch off between the Stagg [X}, V60 and really enjoy using the April Brewer. :). One of these days I will spend time and do a side-by-side comparison with the same coffee.

Really like the smaller version (x) for the consistent flow rate and thermal retention. I find myself using it for medium roasts as they seem to benefit from the faster flow rates, and generally reach for something with a slower flow (Kalita, etc) for lighter roasts.

Nice video, as always. Could you do the comparison between several new brewers (StaggX, StaggXF, Lily Dripper 2.0, Orea,...) ? That would be awesome.

Hey April, do you encounter a metallic taste derived from the steel kettle used for boiling water? I’m passionate about ceramic just like you, but we all need a gooseneck kettle right? There are glass gooseneck kettles I guess, tho they may be a hassle.

Lance Hedrick did a video on the small one recently, and he folded a Melita-style filter to fit (without waves). Similar to your idea. 😉

Thanks for the vid! Re: grind size. What was used? I know you have been mentioning the difficulty of conveying grind size in videos. I think reporting average size in microns based on the Brewler, is probably the most straightforward info that most people can use; Kruve has a free pdf download of the Brewler. Mine is starting to have notes all over it!
@rttange1
@rttange1 2 жыл бұрын
It won't really tell you anything because the fines and the bolders has a lot more to say than the average size does. unless you have the same grinder and knife you really can't compare grinds besides some ruff schematic about how fine ore corse you are grinding. It is one og those things you have to dial in on your own equipment especially then it come to tase your water has a lot more to say than what you can get from measure micro size in the grind.
@smtesta
@smtesta 2 жыл бұрын
@@rttange1 an "average" is a value, and one that can be useful. Thus, providing microns can convey a common starting point that users can tweak on their particular grinder.
@rttange1
@rttange1 2 жыл бұрын
@@smtesta But unless you have the same grinder and water the taste of the coffee won't have the same taste. and even then you will have the style of pouring to make even another variable. I worked wit another barista and we braved on the same equipment same pouring times and brew times. Alle the same parameters from equipment to recipes. We still had a dirrence in the of 0,15 his had 1.20 mine 1.35. We tried 3 in a row and our respektive TDS where consistent. The reason to write is that you can measure anything and try to be the shame on the internet but in the end it is close to impossible to copy exactly what other hase done. The most important thing is still do dial a recipe in the same way that a chef taste over and over again and free tune the amount of salt, sweet, acidity, bitternes and umami. Those fine nuances has to be sensed to be controlled.

You should never force the paper filter right to the bottom so it sits on the brewer. Gently push the part filter in and let the water used for heating and cleaning the filter do the rest. I find that done this way you won't get choking with the Fellow X brewer

For us this is a "standard brew time" and fast brews would be closer to 2:00 or below - using the same ratio.

I find that the stagg xf does really well with 30g to 500ml, relatively fine grinds, and pulse pours of about 75-100 g each. I only use the XF when I want to serve more than one person.
