The Staten Island Railway is a rapid transit line in the New York City borough of Staten Island. SIR operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, providing local service between St. George and Tottenville, along the east side of the island. It is the only line on the island - there is no direct rail link between the SIR and the New York City Subway system. Here are several video clips showing various parts of this bucolic line. Enjoy!

Staten Island is huge. It might be the biggest borough of them all. Also the Staten Island railroad used to have more lines but unfortunately there is now just one in eastern Staten Island. In west Staten Island there is a big container terminal with freight trains.

As a Staten islander who lives near the SIR I think SIR gets made fun of and people call it a “Subway” but it contains railroad tracks like LIRR and goes out. Ik the NYC Subway exits to go outside but technically it’s mostly inside but the SIR in my opinion is one of the most interesting railroad for Staten island
@youminholastransit3218

People who call it a “subway” are plain out stupid. It isn’t a subway because first off, it isn’t even connected to one. Second of all, the railway has BL20Gs locomotives AND B&O Railroad signals. Lastly, if it were to be a subway it would be SIS (Staten Island Subway)

@@youminholastransit3218 Typically, when people call it a “subway” they are referring to the equipment used. The railroad is more like a short commuter railroad, but the cars are still subway cars.

It's overseen by the NYC Transit Department of Subways, it uses subway cars (currently R44s, with it slated to get the newest R211s along with the Subway's B Division), it appears on the subway map, it has a subway-style route bullet, and its service status is listed with the subway lines at the MTA's website. It may not have originated as a subway line, but it has fully evolved into one. It's just disconnected from the rest of the system.

I've been taking these trains since 1967, when I was about 6 years old, so I remember when the R44s were brand new. We lived in Great Kills, and the SIRT station was a hangout for us in our pre-teen days. The tracks were very accessible and when going across town we just used to cut across the tracks at Colon Ave. or Lindenwood Road. This was a daily thing when we went to PS 8 (before PS 32 opened) and later on when we went to IS 24, which was on the other side of the tracks from where we lived. Otherwise you had to walk all the way down to the station and cross over the trestle, and that put you about 3 blocks out of your way, so who was going to do that? One of the "fun" things to do was climb up on the roof of the shelter over the platform, jump onto the train when it pulled in, and "surf" the car up to Bay Terrace or New Dorp. I have to admit I never did this myself. That was cheap thrills for the older kids and by the time I was older the R44s were in and nobody did it any more. I guess those smooth tops were harder to hold on to.

The Staten Island Railway is a "Railroad" ie subject to Federal Railroaf Administration(FRA) rules not Federal Transit Administration rules. SIR has a few exemptions the biggest is Ditch Lites, the two flashing bright lites on the front of locomotives, in addition to a single headline. FRA granted the exemption because of a fenced off right of way with no grade crossing s. Also SIR operates under a federal railroad charter, not a local transit authority. It is a unique operation in many ways.

They are still classified as RR Engineers as per NORAC because they were GRANDFATHERED-IN by these RAILROAD rules and regulations when the City of New York & the MTA bought them out from the B&O back in 1971, since they are also qualified to operate diesel locomotives and freight trains as well. Notice that before they leave Saint George or Tottenville, they have to charge-up the train and dump it, and recharge same before leaving their respective terminals. Otherwise - NO DICE !!! Exploring? How do you define that as exploring? For all the detail shown, that could have ben in Siberia.

I think ya should have shown the names of the stations ijs also you usually ride trains and take videos from front window. Most people have no idea 💡 that SI has a MTA rail system. You should provide some information ℹ️ to educate otherwise it just looks like random train platforms that look alike. Kinda boring and repetitive. imo ijs 🤷🏻
