to add to what the other guy said, rivets made in a similar manner are used in the construction of military aircraft. when the pilots need to eject, they don't have time to open up the canopy and climb out. when a pilot pulls the ejection handle, the bolts and rivets holding the canopy in place explode and the canopy is launched from the aircraft before the ejection seat launches the pilot from the aircraft.

Out of context it's weird to design parts so that they fail reliably. However those are very useful in aviation and space exploration! I'm glad this was suggested to me, i was looking for a good explaination on how exactly those work!
@Yora21
@Yora21 3 жыл бұрын
There are so many places in engineering where you want a specific part to fail first. Often it's a part that will disable the object, but won't cause much danger when it fails. Or it's in a single use item that will be thrown into the trash after it did its job once anyway.
@Tuning3434
@Tuning3434 3 жыл бұрын
@@Yora21 Indeed, even bolt connection themselves should be designed such that the bolt (preferably under the head) fails first, instead of risking stripping the thread on the counterpart. Drilling out a bolt is lousy task, but relative simple. Having to retread the counterpart with an insert can be a nightmare.

That's called auto-ignition. Usually these bolts are tested in an oven for auto-ignition beyond the operating temperature of the application.
@SKYWURX
@SKYWURX 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, they would have been tested but the bolts held the model attached to the lower ventral fin of the X-15. The extra shockwave created by the model impinged on the fin and caused extreme heating which partialy burnt through the inconel skin of the aircraft. A weird one as you would assume that the creation of an strong extra shockwave would be reasonably obvious. If I remember rightly it also endangered a hydraulics system too? I read it in "At the edge of space" by Milton Orville Thompson.

Depends on the aircraft... When a pilot ejects there can be dozens of "pyro events" all happening within milliseconds. All the cables and wires attached to the ejection seat need to be cut (explosive cable cutters), the pilots head, arms, and legs need to be pulled back into the seat (explosive gas generators), canopy ejection (bolts or det cord), and rocket motor ignition (pyrotechnic ignitor), so on...

I build these types of products for a living... It's a bitch... Safety is hard but honestly shipping is harder to manage. And this industry is regulated by the ATF and they don't mess around... not for the faint of heart

I was wondering how these worked. I saw many spaceship launch videos and knew they used these to hold the boosters on, but I never fully knew how they worked. Thanks.

Well yes, that's certainly one explanation. Not bad, if you take a look at the patents for these things they have some that use Thermite, at ignition the Thermite turns to a liquid which expands and snaps the bolt.

Thermine is fascinating stuff. Love working with it. You can combine some thermite and magnesium powder and stips. Along with some 24 oz water bottles, balloons and alot of duct tape to make homemade flashbangs. You essentially build a chamber in the center of the bottle with the balloon full of thermite magnesium mixture. This is sealed to a steel straw that has a magnesium strip inside that reaches the top of the bottle. Fill with water and seal in such a way that the strip is sticking out of the bottle but not touching water. Light strip throw strip hits thermite magnesium mix, flashes the water to steam inside the bottle that you wrapped several times in duct tape. Bottle ruptures and steam explosion goes "BANG" while the balloon full of magnesium and thermite blinds ya. I may have received a citation for showing one of these off at a 4th of July party. The sound it makes is closer to a full stick of dynamite than any legal fireworks.

@@Aztesticals Magnesium when lit and touches water it creates hydrogen gas so that why your explosion super loud. Magnesium is very cool but dangerous.
