By 2011, Japanese anesthesiologist Yoshitaka Fujii had over 200 scientific papers to his name. But for more than a decade, his colleagues doubted his output. His data was too “nice.” Noted Science Zaddy Kyle Hill explains how simple statistics made Dr. Fujii the face of scientific misconduct.

*Thanks for watching!* Slightly different video today, hope it's interesting. Re: today's sponsor. I usually just focus on the science, but unfortunately I know many of you have questions about today's sponsor. Just wanted to give you some further information, and asking you to give your Noted Science Zaddy the benefit of the doubt here. I look into stuff, and believe in net positives, especially regarding mental health. It's now public information that no private information such as members' names or clinical data from therapy sessions was ever shared with advertisers, publishers, social media platforms, or any other similar third parties. Since the settlement, BH has been certified by HITRUST, which is an industry-recognized gold standard for providing the highest level of information protection. I truly believe mental health IS health, and should be taken care of as such. Everyone should have access to therapy. Here's an in-depth, independent (and not endorsed by BH) breakdown if you want to learn more: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/inside-the-ftcs-deal-with-betterhelp/id1107777021?i=1000602612171

Worth considering that he may be locked into a contract with them. They've sponsored him for a while now, since way before the latest scandal, and there have been a series of videos lately sponsored by them. He probably agreed to do so many ads for them and is contractually obligated to fulfill that agreement. Maybe when things are more settled he'll be able to get out of the contract, or just fulfill it and move on. I'm just speculating of course, and Kyle seems generally disinclined to talk about the business side of his channel at all, so we might not ever know for sure.

@piedpiper1172

Their exploitation of that coaching status is extra infuriating because it smears both therapists and legitimate coaches. I benefitted from a year visiting an ADHD coach, but they never claimed to be anything other than what they were, and were super up front about it not being the same as therapy. No one who is hiding what their service really is will provide you with worthwhile services. Even your drug dealer doesn’t pretend not to be one to you. Don’t trust coaches posing as therapists.

@@crepeenjoyer you can, actually. I’m literally a law student my guy. You don’t have to honor a contract if you have a reasonable belief it’s illegal, and no court would hold up a contract that requires the promisee to do something illegal. Now, you may have the burden to show that it was a scam if it gets challenged in court, and “reasonable belief” is an objective standard, it’s not just any subjective belief, and there has to be an actual solid basis for your belief. Contracts aren’t this magical force you have to honor it no matter what. Contracts are consistently voided if requiring performance would be unconscionable, or for public policy reasons. You can’t contractually agree to do something illegal, so a contract for a scam doesn’t have to be honored. Furthermore, I never said the company was a scam, or that you can void a contract if you have any subjective thought it was a scam. I was just correcting the person who replied, who was under the impression that you are locked into a contract no matter what. I was addressing that as a general premise, not to the specific scenarios here. Idk shit about this company and I have no idea if this was a scam, and I never said any contract can void if you simply think it’s a scam, that’s just poor reading comprehension on your part. But please, correct me some more, and teach me about contract law, since you know so much it seems.

From what Kyle said they were cleared of wrongdoing for that - it is worth noting that medical confidentiality isn't absolute and certain aspects of your dealings with a healthcare provider can be disclosed under various circumstances (and I'm not just referring to high risk individual information either). This can be done for scummy but legal reasons for certain bits of information under some conditions as well. The much bigger problem would be the multiple other controversies that VH were embroiled in that seem to have escaped Kyle's notice on the basis that they're just slightly less well known than the data sharing issue.

In the past, I've been shamed by colleagues because I tend to ask for their sources of information so I can read it myself and see if the info I have is wrong, or the paper they cited has insifficient evidence... my biggest concern right now is how much, even in the scientific world, we tend to be borderline religious about data that many, if not all, haven't even read, let alone analysed... EDIT: These replies terrify me, not only because at a micro level, many are being negligent, but at a macro level, it explains why so many distrust scientist and STEM related fields...

I've had this problem with doctors. Before I made personal medical decisions I always take a glance through the NIH databases and see what's out there on my condition / medication. If I see something strange, I'll bring it up to the doctor and ask if I should be concerned - I've more than once caught oversights and interactions with doctors who are willing to hear me out, but so many before dismissed my concerns or even berated me for "thinking I know better." I don't. I know I don't know better than a doctor, that's why I'm *asking a doctor*. 😂 It worries me how many times I've caught something a doctor saying or doing that's outright incorrect or poorly researched, because I'm a rare breed who reads research papers for fun. Most people would just assume the doctor always has the time and resources to know everything about the human body... Which is a bit unfair to expect

Hoping you don't accept a better help sponsor in the future. I understand needing the funding to make videos in the first place, but theres too many worrying things about better help to even consider using them. Theres a part of their terms of service that says they will sell people's therapy session information to third parties if any were to offer a price. There was also some concern that they don't look into the therapists they hire, and some are alleged to not have any psychology degrees, or have just been very unprofessional in general.

@@bosstowndynamics5488 You should look up the phenomenon of “idea laundering” in academia. I think Bret Weinstein spoke about it a few years back. Basically a scientist publishes a bogus study, then someone cites that paper, which uses the bogus info as support of their new data, then other papers reference that, then the first author uses the new papers as citations to bolster their new paper, and no one goes through the other levels to the original source to verify the original data that is the foundation. A great example is the “1:4 women will be raped on college campuses” assertion. Turns out that has no scientific basis. It was an excerpt from a Gloria Steinem book from the 70’s, and it was based on a remark made by a New York police officer during a speech at a convention regarding a particular district in New York. There is no data to support this statement, but people still unthinkingly take it as a settled fact.

I don't hate BH for the reasons I've seen commented but actually for their TERRIBLE billing and pricing options. BH is terrible unless you're needing to meet every single week with a therapist. That's not necessary for a ton of people and BH only suggests pausing your subscription EACH time and then resuming it a month later. The problem is that you can't schedule with the same therapist or they aren't available for the same week. Hopefully that makes sense. Basically, their billing options are garbage and makes it impossible to stick with a therapist if you find one you like.

Pressure to publish comes down to funding and promotion. Someone that is prolifically published in peer reviewed journals tends to get more funding/more prestigious positions in academia. I do hope you carefully consider how you respond to this criticism as I’m sorry but I won’t be able to take your content seriously again until you do.

1. There was never any "contract of trust." He never signed anything, or read over any of your vague rules. Stop taking this personally. 2. They were not found guilty of leaking information about therapy visits.

I think you missed the word “implied” in my comment above. As someone who presents themselves as a well researched science educator, there is an implied contract of trust that in exchange for our attention, he provides accurate and trustworthy content, and thus the brands he DIRECTLY endorses are also trustworthy. I think it’s pretty well accepted that Better Help is not a trustworthy brand, and unfortunately he’s aware of that, which brings in to question his broader trustworthiness. I hope that explains it.

Oof. Going to have to unsubscribe because Betterhelp is horrible - they stole $350 from me, all over a NOT QUALIFIED "therapist". I thought you were a good researcher. :(

I have never understood how paying some one to ask "How are you doing today" and "How did that make you feel?" is supposed to change anything. Maybe if you are super lonely and have no one to talk to it would be nice. If that's the case you may want to think about why you have alienated every single person in your life to the point they wont talk to you anymore. But that's just me.

Kyle I know you gotta pay the bills and all so no hard feelings, but if you take better help sponsorship at least don't put it on a video about medical fraud unless it's a very meta joke

Kyle should be on the retraction board of respected journals. RETRACTED Abstract: Through detailed analysis of the information provided in the reviewed paper, it has been determined that everything that this author submitted was complete bulls*it. I would read that.
