What does freedom mean? From being expelled from high school, to his struggles with mental health, to Uber driving, Rodrigo Rangel talks of how he transformed his boxed-up life in Monterrey into one of adventure and personal fulfillment in Victoria, British Columbia. Rodrigo has been making KZfaq videos for over 7 years. He studied Anthropology at the University of Victoria in British Columbia, Canada and currently lives in Toronto where he still makes KZfaq videos, drives an Uber, and trains for cross country skiing. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

My life was steady climbing and I felt so successful, then all at once I quit my job without notice or plan, broke up with my long term boyfriend, and went home to Ohio to see my family. Everyone applauded me for being bold but I knew deep down I was manic.

I could really resonate with this guy. I'm autistic with lots of mental health issues, one of which I've recently learned is bipolar. These manic episodes that I went through, I had no idea what they were called until recently. I've had a really difficult and unhappy life, but I was never so unhappy as when I was going after things people were telling me to want. I always burned out and spiralled into deep, dark depression. A life like his, doing something simple for a living and coming home to do whatever he wants--I think I need to do that too.

I found out I have bipolar. I had trouble even sleeping for two weeks. Work I am scared to tell my boss I am having a bad day. I feel like I cannot work anymore but it's hard because I am only one that works out of my wife and kids. I burned through my leave because still trying to find the right meds.

Hi there! I would probably advise you talk to a therapist. You can tell them anything you're going through. It's really worth it and can help one gain more control over one's life

What an interesting story. It seems to me that the two manic episodes he spoke about in this story were induced by substance abuse. Personally, I self-medicated for years until I was finally put on the correct dose of medication. Once that happened, I never had another urge to have another beer or toke again.

Hey man we’re you in the process of ramping up into a manic episode during this? That “lightness” sounds exactly like that excitement you get when you’re manic.

To me it seems like he's tapping into his memories of what mania feels like in order to demonstrate how it feels. But he's staying focused and following a script. That would be impossible during my hypomanic episodes before I found the right medication. Also, as a bipolar person, something like this-giving a speech in front of hundreds if not thousands of people-can be very triggering for manic episodes because it's so risky and exhilarating but also scary. But, usually with medication and coping mechanisms we can stop the episode from blowing out of control and stay calm. It's our superpower, but it's also a curse.

sounds like he is going through a manic episode in this video... was he diagnosed with bipolar??
@leafyveins4985
@leafyveins4985 Жыл бұрын
It is a possibility he has bipolar disorder or something similar, such as ADHD, OCD, or ADD. Or something else. It's impossible to tell from one video. To me, it sounds like he's having severe anxiety and mania or hypomania. But i could be wrong.. Situations like this, such as speaking in front of hundreds if not thousands of people and the social pressure of that is often very overwhelming for those of us that suffer from bipolar disorder and can send us into a manic/hypomanic episode. It's also stressful and scary for most people so if you have a mental illness it's even worse.
