Hi Chucjk! I've been watching this video and am sure glad to find you. My home is on a sloped property. I only discovered my drainage problem when I was insulating in my crawlspace and found it partially flooded. Watching your video gave me confidence I could do the work to fix the problem. Yes it is hard work. With some help from a few friends, I dug out around the foundation to the footer and followed your directions to waterproof , gravel, and pipe the water out to the street. Thank you for posting this video so diyers like myself can confidently do this. I will be 71 in about a week and am grateful for good health enabling me to complete this job!! I really appreciate it.

I just had to check in with you. Michigan has been hit with massive storms and even a tornado 3x in the past month resulting in horrible water issues at my house. After watching your video I followed everything to the letter and using my family to trench, the BlackJack liquid rubber, gravel, the footer tile and trenched out to daylight. I'm fortunate my brother does basement waterproofing so a bit spoiled there. Thank you so much for your video. I feel much more confident for the storms coming up and keeping my home safe. Bravo.

Thank you for explaining what a drain tile is, and also how it works. I keep hearing that phrase “drain tile” and there is no tile to be seen lol. I kept wondering how this black pipe is supposed to direct water as well. Most videos don’t explain that there are perforations on the bottom. It just looked like a solid strip of corrugated pipe to me before this video, and I was wondering how the water was supposed to get in. This video helped a lot.

Chuck THANK You! I watched this video four years ago and last month I finally found myself in a situation where I needed all of this information. Thanks to you I just successfully laid 270 feet of footer tile French drains + solid pipe around my house with solid pipe connecting in all my downspouts and 5 catch basins all trying in and going out to daylight at the end of my property. I Used rubber coat #57 around the foundation, and also installed a dry well, sump pump, and lastly a silt trap for a channel drain off my driveway. I would not have had the confidence or had the knowledge to do it if it had not been for you! Thank you

thank you, this was very helpful. We have had a particularly wet Spring/early Summer and water had entered our home above the foundation slab. Luckily, the flooding was confined to one room of the house. However, our gutter system failed this season due to ice storms we had previously and I had not gotten around to fixing the damaged system. Now I am forced to address the problem, as this is what led to the flooding. Your video was very helpful in explaining the installation and operation of a foundation "French" drain. Keep posting your videos, especially any tips or tricks that you might offer the DIYer. Have a blessed day.

Thank you for the great how-to. I recently discovered that the drainage around my foundation and bulkhead is all screwed up, leading to some water penetration in my basement. Refinishing the basement is a costly thing that I was hoping to do in 5 years, not 3 months... and while I'll have to hire a mason to re-do the hardscaping (that's sloped to get all of the water on my patio right against my basement window), I feel much better about using trenching and gravel to waterproof my exterior.

Was thinking the same thing. He started off saying the home owner could do this job themselves. I am thinking that is probably true. IF the home owner had: 4 kids in top shape, specialty tools like the blower, trencher, a trailer, needed supplies like that rubber and pre-rubber stuff etc.. AND the first clue on how to do it all. Then, absolutely! Piece of cake! Lol! It is good to have specialists to help. After all, I cannot know everything! Too funny.

Chuck love you videos I wish you come back to a job when it pouring down rain and include it in video to really show folks the destructive power of Water. Just spent two years fighting city to get a 600 foot 6” tile running north against the natural flow. Lucky that it starts 3 feet below my yard and runs down .7 inches to outlet to District tile that had just been cleared and is a 12” drain that only has 4 inlets prior to exiting town and discharging into deep ditch that goes to creek 3 drains out of small town and most of town floods with standing water but I stood fast fought hard hired professional engineers and got it done. No more lake in my front yard when it pours Got to fight sometimes but nothing is impossible! The drain on my third connecting lot to North is 10 Feet deep ! Was a hell of a project but increased value of all my lots and no more septic problems and with building up slope around home that ties into tile and gutter system it’s finally done Thank you for your inspiring videos. I wish my project would of been as easy as this one! If one has no place to run drain to; don’t give up there is a way to solve problem. City would not let me go across street the legal way as backlash of 40 homes already having problems from that tile and it turned out for the best. I had to pay for the 600 Feet Of Pipe I signed and dated every darn piece of pipe in 3 places as it was installed in 2 days.

We just purchased a home in North Carolina that's on a sloped lot and whenever it rains hard I think have water coming in through the foundation into the crawlspace. Thankfully there's only one portion of the foundation on the slope the other side is still flat where the driveway is. I think I'm going to try and tackle this project!

Hi Chuck, Been watching so many of your videos and learning a lot. I live in the south and we've had a ton of down pours creating a good amount of water in my crawlspace. Now planning to get a sump pump with a trench and drainage around the inside of the foundation. "EZ Flow" system that runs into the pump seems to be popular although someone said that EZ Flow is styrofoam and just floats no matter how much weight you put over it. One contractor told me it's a waste of money and that they use perforated tubing and cover with gravel to keep in place. Now I'm confused and want to see if you have an opinion about the EZ flow system. Thanks for any help and for educating us out here. Have a great day.
