Thanks a lot. 1st time I get complete information to playback a controller. Here another tip : if you don't see Routing Button in track line in new Reaper version, watch at the bottom in the mixer section OR change the default layout like this : Options / Theme / choose (Default_5.0). Routing Button will appear. Thanks again.

It's so they can be protectionist with doing this shit as a profession; to protect the jobs of "producers" that spent their time learning all of this overly complex shit. If everyone could make music really easily it would make producers make less money. It's disgusting, just like mechanics, or computer repair, or the law, or anything else that is protectionist like that.

R.L. Jeffries well said. It’s the same for when you ask a friend, who’s been doing this since we were kids, if he can help me with the most basics. He gets me into this one man band format but has no time to help a friend. He went to school for this while I didn’t. Thought I was going to be in a rock band lol. Point is, this person wants to make sure you don’t get ahead of him in any way. Even though he has already put out about 5 full length demo albums since we were 13yrs old. We are now 40. And his music never did blow up anyway. Sure, he may have received royalties, but nothing like all us neighborhood kids originally thought. He’s had a regular job since I could remember. I wish the best for who ever & would always give a helping hand to someone close to me when asked, as long as I can give an answer. Either way, it’s a long way to the top, if you wanna rock’n roll!

Thanks. Was trying to figure out the best way to do this, and I thought I must be doing it wrong because Reaper supports midi and audio in the same track... but that didn't work, so I used this method as a fallback. Looks like the fallback was the correct method all along. ... Edit: Looking into things deeper, it looks like newer versions of Reaper have a cleaner way to do this. It can actually do what I was trying to do originally, which was to keep the midi and audio on the same track as separate takes. It just requires enabling "Monitor track media while recording", to make it actually play the midi data while recording audio. Also requires the user to manually change the input source each time, which is inconvenient... but still easier than using a separate track.
@brettcollums3555
@brettcollums3555 4 жыл бұрын
Where do you find "monitor track media" in Reaper? Im recording in using a Korg Prologue and need to create midi tracks so I can quantize and sync the arp on my hard synth. Thanks
@ToyKeeper
@ToyKeeper 4 жыл бұрын
After trying a few different methods, I'd suggest just keeping midi and audio on separate tracks. Putting them together as separate takes on a single track is ... awkward. So record the midi into one track, edit the midi to sound however you want, then make a second track for the audio. After rendering the midi clip to audio, you should be able to mute the midi track and leave only the audio track enabled.
@DecentralEyes
@DecentralEyes 3 жыл бұрын
@@brettcollums3555 Right-click the "Record Arm" button on the mixer track channel you plan on recording to, then select the "Monitor Track Media While Recording" option from the pop-up list. This option lets you hear the audio being recorded as it is being captured.

When he mentions turning off local control of synth, I actually bypassed this just to see what would happen using prophet 6. It seams to be working fine either way in Reaper. I recently decided to demo Logic Pro X.5 to compare workflow. From the very start of new project, I found an issue when recording 4 or more midi notes. Last 3 notes are the only audible notes when sent to Logic even though all midi data is printed. But when I playback midi track, all notes are audible when sent back to synth. Then I came back to this vid & remembered to turn off local control. Now when I record 4 + midi notes, no audio disappears. With that said, when exploring other DAW’s, I never expected to run into issues I didn’t have with the first. Clearly every DAW has its own flaws. Now I can’t automate from synth unless I turn local control back on lol.

Thanks! Personally, I like to program my synths and record them, but, obviously, I want to quantise it and then, convert that MIDI info. to an audio signal like you show here. I knew that you can send that MIDI information of any synth to any DAW without triggering a VST, but this is the first time I can do it. Regards! By the way: I find Reaper much more easy to use than Cubase.

Wow took me a few days to find this tutorial. Thanks though, it makes sense. Just trying out some DAWs and for user feedback I find that with cakewalk you can get this MIDI setup working almost intuitively by playing around with it. With Reaper i get totally lost (until you watch the tutorial). For me its not intuitive to convert the track to a MIDI track in Reaper and something Reaper could improve. I also find Reaper is crashing in that it just wont play a piece until you restart it. Im trying to figure out what Im doing that could make that happen.

Sorry a very late reply, and you may have solved it in the meantime. You get Midi levels in the Midi track and that is good. However, you have to tell Reaper where to send the Midi data. That is in Routing-Midi Hardware output. The Midi outputs that you selected in Preferences will show up here. Then you make a second track, which is your audio track. Record arm this track and select either mono or stereo inputs corresponding to your synths connections.

@crhkrebs
@crhkrebs 3 жыл бұрын
@@67lobe Midi can be sent across 16 separate channels. If you only have a few instruments with their own Midi cables then just have everything on channel 1 or “all midi channels”. However, this becomes important if you only have a small Midi device. So you may have only one Midi output and you have 2 Midi synths. Midi output goes into Midi In of synth 1 and Midi Thru of synth 1 goes to Midi In of synth 2. If you have everything set to Midi channel 1 then both synths will play the identical midi data. You may not want that. Therefore, have synth 2 on Midi channel 2. Set the Midi track to Midi channel 2 and that track’s Midi info will be ignored by synth 1 (set to receive on Midi channel 1) and will only be played by synth 2. Some people daisy chain 3 to 4 synths in this way. Midi is only a serial data stream so this is not recommended due to delays.

On some digital pianos you can disable the built in speakers, so the sound only comes out of the line outs or headphone jack. One way is to double click on the midi item in the track to take you into the midi event editor. Down at the bottom left there's a dropdown. You can set it to, e.g. Bank/Program Select, then double click in the grey area (you might need to drag the bottom of the piano roll area up a bit) and insert the type of control change you want, at the point you want. 2 MIDI cables and 2 audio cables (if it's a stereo synth), yes. The MIDI cables usually can be replaced by a simple USB connection on more recent hardware synths, but the audio is NEVER sent over USB, always through the audio outputs on your synth. The USB is only there for midi (and updating firmware, importing/exporting presets, etc...)

I'm using REAPER and I can't seem to get this to work with my synth, but that's not the focus of my comment. I'm sure I'll get it, but I have a question on why a person would need to record this way? Not meaning to be dense, but can anyone explain the advantages of recording the midi data first and then the audio track from the midi, versus just recording the synth via audio without the midi? What I see here, and in other videos, is essentially a process of laying down an audio track, but with the addition of a midi track first. So....if the idea is to create an audio track, why not just record the audio? I'm not asking this to be a prick, but as a complete midi newbie that started down this midi rabbit hole a week or so ago after only recording via the audio outputs of my synth for the past couple of years or so. I'm a simple home recording person that records their own music for fun, hobby, tinkering, etc. No live performing or any of that. I retired a handful of years ago and had always wanted to get into synths and purchased a Korg Kronos to cut my teeth on. I've used it to learn to create sounds, drum tracks, recording...etc. I compose my own music with my Korg running the audio outputs to my audio interface. The audio interface is then plugged into the computer via USB and my monitors connect to the output of the audio interface. When I'm ready to record I arm a track, hit record, play the piece for the track, then repeat the process for however many tracks a piece of music needs. If it's a complex piece then I record the tracks to the built in sequencer on the Kronos first, edit and quantize the tracks, then record the tracks into my daw. So, is it a case of a synth not having a built in sequencer, in which case you record the midi into the daw so the software can quantize and edit the midi data before laying down the audio track itself?

At the end, you said to duplicate the tracks if you want to add new sounds. But in my case, that’s re-triggering the original track’s midi, so how would I add different sounds from the same keyboard to different tracks w/ this method, while still hearing the sound I just previously tracked during playback? Do I have to freeze all the midi I just recorded for tracking, and then unfreeze when I want to edit the midi later?

Hi, Kenny! I hope you can help me with one issue. I connetcted hardware synth via MIDI in Reaper like you did in this video. So, basically I'm recording MIDI signal first with monitoring only on the main synth inputs, then quantize the notes and then I'm recording an audio signal given by the notes I recorder earlier. I'm using an arpeggiator synchronized with DAW tempo, but on start of some sections of the song it plays just the single note, while the MIDI signal has solid four beat note and arpeggiator is still on. The other three bars in the section being played and recorded normally. What it can be, what's the problem?

How do I send midi out (via a DAW track(s) ) from a Nektar Impact LX25+ to an external synth ?

I guess Reaper is a bit more complicated than Bitwig. In Bitwig I can record 600 various sounds on my Impacat LX 61+ keyboard right a way. Here it will take time to learn how to do it. If it is even possible? Any good hints on how to do it in Reaper? Thanks, Michael.

Can you set it so that REAPER will take midi clock instructions from an external source?

quick question, do i have to plug in midi cables if i just want to record the audio from the keyboard?

audio (sound) goes through the audio cables. MIDI is for sending the note/composition information which would cause the piano to sound automatically. By connecting both, you can use the keyboard with remote MIDI, and capture & record the audio. If you don't have midi cables, just go buy some. They should be 10$ or less each cable, or you can purchase a ~20-40$ USB MIDI Interface. word!

Thanks for the info. Very useful. How do we set up an external synth to just play a VST like say Spitfire Labs etc? Thank you.

Awesome. I'm totally new to this. Is there a way to shape the audio signal with daw plugins?

the video is exact what I am looking for, anyways I hear my synth but I cannot reproduce routing the wave audio of the Synth on reaper. I think this works only in combination with an external audio interface... I just plugged my microbrute via USB to my DAW, well most things work but as I told there is missing that routing part. Would have been cool if you show not only perfect video but also simple videos that show what is possible, if you do not use an audio interface, that would be my suggestion ;.)

EDIT: I figured it out! Thanks! Can this work with a simple midi to usb cable adapter, directly from the keyboard into the laptop? I have an audio interface, but I don't have the midi cables you described, so I can't plug the keyboard into it. What's happened is that my keyboard can record a midi sequence, but I hear no audio when I play it back.
