Reaper is the gift that keeps on giving. Many times while watching this kind of thing I have to sit back and marvel at the genius of the initial architecture design. This is what has led us to v6 where everything is now polished, and you can achieve almost anything you can imagine in a DAW if you're prepared to stretch your mind. Really enjoyed the vid and presentation style, thanks!

If you use your analog gear to record “takes”, you can make a pass with chorus settings, verse settings, intro-outro settings and swipe a composite. This allows you easily use your gear to create dynamics, pump, and movement in the different parts of you arrangement with each pass and try out the different passes in a comp.

@grimmmstudios23674 жыл бұрын
I think you can record up to 64 'takes' per track, there are videos which explain the possibility's, like recording multiple takes of multiple mic'd drums, for comping together-it can get confusing though. Definitely a feature that has been well worked out though.

Been working in a similar way for the last 2-3 years. I've got a simple Reaper macro set up so that I can just hit "i" and it will add ReaInsert at the end of the FX chain of the currently selected track AND Airwindows StudioTan for a colored dither on the signal that's being converted down from 64 float to 24 fixed point (so literally just a macro to add StudioTan and ReaInsert in that order). I still create a new track and record (without monitoring) the return channels on that while monitoring the channel that Reinsert is on. Could be streamline even more but even as-is it's really quick to set up hardware inserts in an ITB mix or add hardware aux sends (in that case I add a new track, add a hardware insert by pressing "i" while that track is selected, and then treat it like any other fully ITB aux send until I get the mix where I want it, at which point I record the output of that track and then bypass the insert - pretty basic stuff really but Reaper makes it very natural and quick). most of the time I'm either inserting hardware compressors, using hardware reverb on an aux send, or routing the master buss through the Otari MX5050. Once I sat down and spent a little time figuring out a workflow, it made using hardware in an ITB mix almost as seamless as using plugins. Hopefully I explained that in a way that makes sense. I don't really like using takes in Reaper. They're useful but it's too easy to accidentally select a different take while selecting a clip[ on the timeline. When I DO use takes, as soon as I have a take (or a comp of multiple takes) that I like I'll use "crop to current take" in the item right click menu to convert the clip in question from a multi-take thing to a regular clip of the good take(s). the sooner I can get i of multi-take clips on the timeline the happier I am.
@djabthrash3 жыл бұрын
The best way to not change takes by accident is by choosing the option that doesn't display the lanes. Then the only way to switch between takes is to hit "T" (or "shift + T").

The guys behind Reaper should really take these macros that people make and consider making them a simple button for everybody to use when they open Reaper for the first time.

I like analog gear, but more for tracking. If you wanna do something like that in Cubase (Pro only) it's quite easy. You can setup analog gear as insert and of course print that at any time.

The answer is clear, just make better results! But seriously I'm very interested in this, I've been trying to get the analogue sound on the way in, using hardware when recording - I've honestly never yet bounced anything out of Logic (with the handy I/O plugin) for more analog processing - would be fun to try! I'm wondering how many generations you can go to before the D/A then A/D starts to degrade the sound?

@alexbreyer69214 жыл бұрын
I like the tip suggestions like this, although I currently work only ITB. But, not having used Reaper before, I'm wondering if this is just like Logic Pro's "Take" folder with alternative takes. You could keep earlier unprocessed takes lower in the folder so that isn't heard in the mix.

cmd alt R (ctrl alt R on PC) on selected track with ReaInsert plugin on - render to file - (selected stems, add rendered item to new tracks in project) renders hardware in real time providing you have a proper compensation measured or your interface gives you good automatic readings. You can create a child track, insert ReaInsert, send tracks you want to be fx-ed to that track and render reverb etc.

One thing I found out and may be help others is that the Reaper pan law have a effect on the level of new recorded take from track output, any setting accept +0.0db on pan law option will turn down new recorded take set amount, for example if we have pan law set to -3.0, new take from track output will be -3.0 quieter. The only thing I found that stop this happening is to have gain compensation (boost pan) on. I may be wrong but this is what I saw doing my own tests, hope it could help someone and correct me if I am wrong.

Hello, I'm fairly new to Reaper. I started running it on a PC and everything ran great. Now, I run it to a Mac and even upgraded to Reaper V7.03 and have problems getting signal for my analog inputs (level meter does not move and recorded audio is silent/empty). Could anybody point me in the right direction? I did some troubleshooting as follows: - cable connections are good - correct audio device is selected in preferences/audio/device - the track is armed - the correct input is selected - On my audio interface loop-back mixer, I can see the signal meter moving for both inputs - Volume levels are high enough on the inputs to capture signal Am I missing anything? Please help! Thanks!

At my post production studio job, I've been kinda forced to keep my mixes in my laptop, so I rely completely on vsts to get my job done. If anything, having a good room and monitors is most important to me so I know where my mix stands. Will hardware give me an advantage over vsts for time honored mixing techniques and traditions?
