I hope this helps someone somewhere.

Great video, as usual. As a person who is thinking that the Neel 51 is the best compromise on the market, I am curious to know if you were to change boat, would you go for the same? Also, would it be possible to have an in-mast main sail? Thoughts on solid life lines (as in AMELs)? Cheers and keep the video coming.

Yes to all of your points but in mast furling you loose performance, in boom would be good. But remember that is another thing to potentially fail. I would double the height of the stanchions and use an ethical brand.

Thanks James for posting the video. I’ve been enjoying the technical and sailing tips and advice. I really enjoy your style of video. There’s more then enough touristy sailing videos. I really like the Neel 51, beautiful boat in every way. I was wondering if you need to be strategic as to where and who can haul out the boat? I know this isn’t something you need to do maybe once every few years but you never know, like Sans loosing a piece of their propeller. Cheers 🍻
@carryonsailing
@carryonsailing 3 жыл бұрын
George, a very kind comment from you, thanks. We aspire to make a difference, not just profit. Planning and strategy are some of the pleasures in sailing, but I have not really had too much of an issue finding somewhere to haul out, what I would say is more difficult, finding adequately skilled labour to help. The same mantra strikes again, better to know and do it yourself, better on many levels. Remember, anywhere there are ships, you will find a large crane. Some emergency scenario shouldn't be a problem. The real issue is do you want to live in a dry dock in THAT shipyard while doing the work......They are never a nice place to be.

Another great helpful one James! Very good tips and advice from a battle tested ship! Very impressed with the bow protection!!! On another subject, one of my big concern on single rudder boat is ;" Do you have a strategy in case you lose the rudder?" Chhers. THank you James and Eva.
@carryonsailing
@carryonsailing 3 жыл бұрын
You should be able to balance it ok with the sails, it will be slower of course. Depends on how bad the damage is, but as you can see we have a good workshop, lots of underwater resin like splashzone that can fix below the waterline. The keel also protects the rudder. If you were going crazy with money, perhaps also buy a windvane. The emergency tiller works fine if its the rudder links but we could easily rig something up quickly to fix that. I am not massively concerned TBH. Don't forget monohulls have been doing just fine for centuries.
@tonewreck1
@tonewreck1 3 жыл бұрын
@@carryonsailing thanks for the answer James. Actually lots of monohulls have been abandoned at sea just because of rudder failures, which is such a huge waste. Would a windvane really work on such a big boat with a cockpit shielding the wind? Is there a Neel 51 with one around? There are alternatives like drogues and such, jerry rigging a rudder that works is no small feat, that's why I was wondering if you had some thing planned out. All the best.
@carryonsailing
@carryonsailing 3 жыл бұрын
I have a jordan series drogue and yes you could use the windvane to steer with less sail up and no rudder. I would make a new rudder out of the old one and spare parts I carry with resin. Basic new rudder would take about an hour to make I would have thought. It wont win any races, but she'll get you home

Loving these detailed technical videos. Even when you spend just a short time on simple things like the preventer, I learn a lot. My wife likes hearing about your dog. You mentioned that every country has different rules. Have you gotten into a situation where the dog hasn't been able to go ashore? Has the dog ever been a problem when customs comes on board to search your boat or when you had advisor / line handlers on board for the Panama canal?

Great mods. Videos I'd like to see. Comparisons of the various fast cruising boats. Your Neel is a fast cruiser. How does it compare with an Outremer 55, the Gunboats, the Seawind 1600, the Rapido 60, others (I know you probably haven't sailed these boats, but your experience applied to an overview). If money weren't an issue? How different in practical sailing terms is say your Neel 51 and the 47, and the Outremer 45 and 55? Especially for long passages. (I see the ARC (Atlantic Rally for Cruisers) which isn't supposed to be a race.... The boats that come in first are some super fast designs, but there have also been some Lagoons. (That's a bit like a Winnebago winning the Indy 500). What other boats did you or might you have considered? (Can you tell that I'm shopping? ) Great tip making the sail bag a bit bigger. When I'm done with a charter and I'm putting the unfamiliar main sail away invariably I end up doing everything twice so I can zip the sail bag closed. These things should work for us not the other way round. I don't know about that small cleat at the fore of the ama. I epoxied a raised rest for my rudder on one of my wooden kayaks. One day I needed some help and they just grabbed it snapped it right off leaving a big hole. It looked like a handle. The guy apologized. I was a bit in shock, but not from the damage. No, thank you. You probably just saved my life. Unless I'm wrong, someone's going to try to tie you off to a dock from that point. Maybe a flush pop-up cleat would be better, something that doesn't shout, 'you'll get the best leverage right here.' But maybe I don't know what I'm talking about. And cleats are easier to adjust a line on. Goiot has a huge recall on their escape hatches. Fontaine Pagot, Lagoon, Catana-Bali, and Nautitech. The hatch 'glass' if the sealant gets weak can just pop right out. Underway that ama would likely flood. It seems pretty obvious to me that the 'glass should be mechanically held in place (frames on both sides, bolts...) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oNGBott2u52bg5s.html Some companies seem to make stuff that only 'looks like' the part. The plug. Great tip. That is a critical connection. One morning I walked out my back door to go to my job. Light drizzle. The 240VAC plug to my table-saw - no load on it, was smoking, making a sizzling sound, and had just started a fire in the saw dust. A few minutes either way or if it had been out of my sight it would've been a disaster. I'd used that cord and plug for at least 15 years at that point never an issue (and they never moved around so no wear and tear.) Corrosion builds up on connectors (You may only notice the plug, or connection is a bit warmer, it doesn't show up on a multi-meter, it's never a problem - but maybe a drizzle, some sawdust, pollen....) I wonder how many boat fires have started at connections like that. Another great video. Thanks.

Will, thanks for taking the time to write that. Funny, I was going to do the latest boats review next episode so I'll dedicate that one to you. The hatch should be OK but I really hate that company. The dog could run a company better...

Thank you so much for your videos they are much appreciated! Do you have any comments about the overall build quality observations of Neel 51? I found a website of a disgruntled Neel 51 owner that claims he did more time repairing than sailing. I'm building a Neel 47 as I have the December build slot. The Neel 47 I sailed with sales staff (ARC Winner 2019) in France appeared to be just as good or better than major production builders. I was also interested in the Entegral system but I determined lithium battery prices were astronomically expensive to run the 43K BTU A/C plus the system requires 48V batteries to fast charge in 30 min. I believe the Onan 11KW generator is a cheaper alternative to run the A/C and water maker. I did opt for the Webasto V50 chiller with a variable speed compressor so it may be more efficient. As the batteries become less expensive I think the need for generators will disappear, however, it seems the technology isn't quite ready yet.

I was thinking with the size of the Neel 51, a prospective owner could configure the main living space by clearing some room for an exercise machine or some weights, possibly remove the bed in the bow of the central hull and use that as an exercise room. Wouldn't be a bad idea for a fitness-minded couple. It's crazy how one's mind wanders in ways to customize a yacht with the potential of the Neel 51..

Good question bob. I am a medical doctor and generally have researched this as best I can. Snakes, generally it's curtains and lights out (death).
