Very enjoyable, loved it! A very difficult profession if you decide to tackle it on your own. The human brain wasn't designed to handle multi tasking. Without help, you're gonna blow a fuse. I'm surprised lab grown gems weren't recommended for a choice in rough. It's affordable, consistent quality and from reliable sellers. If it was mentioned and I missed it my apologies.

Honestly, I don’t think that Lab stones come into this equation. If you’re cutting for Jewelers, you’re going to be cutting natural stones that have flaws and inclusions. If you’re buying Rough as an investment to sell, you’re going to be buying natural stones with flaws and inclusions. If you only use synthetic stones to practice on, you’re not really getting a full practice because most of what gem cutting is, is working around those flaws and inclusions to get the best color and yield out of a stone. I suppose it is possible to make an entire business out of synthetic stones, but I wouldn’t recommend it and I don’t think any of the people in the video would recommend it. It’s a really small market in my experience. All of my customers work in natural stones or are looking for natural stones, and it’s very rare, maybe two people in six years of working with customers that people have asked for Synthetucs.

@@JustinKPrim The majority of that reasoning is sound, but even national vendors sell and advertise lab stones alongside natural. For an aspiring cutter, building a body of work in precious lab stones is an affordable way to provide evidence of cut quality to jewelers. Some top cutters split their time between the two types and both sell well. It's a way to offer the customer options otherwise unattainable.

@@DonariaRegia it’s definitely worth a try if it interests you. I have some friends who have a whole business around cutting precision, synthetics and setting them into jewelry. For me, it’s not that interesting and a lot of the ethical slogans don’t align with my value system. I’m not that interested in Synthetic personally and I don’t feel good about trying to convince someone that there’s any reason to buy them other than low price. I’m not that interested in low price

For me there is more here than just information. Here are 3 different personalities. Each has their own way of doing things, yet they all cut gems. Gives you an idea of the mentality needed to cut. You have to be a bit intuitive with this stuff.

Very informative video, i especially liked the segment of buying rough! I have been very interested in picking up gem cutting as a hobby, i have yet to cut my first stone or even gotten the equipment needed to do so but after watching this video i ordered your book The Secret Teachings of Gemcutting and i am very excited for it to arrive! I am leaning towards a mast machine instead of a handpiece machine simply because handpiece machine seems harder to use and easier to mess up with, am i wrong in my thinking?

Glad you liked the video. Mast versus Handpiece is really up to you. I prefer the Handpiece and I teach a lot of students with it, however, lots of people like the mast machine so it’s really a personal choice.
