The book of Judges is akin to the Age of Heroes in Game of Thrones. It was the period that gave us legendary heroes like Gideon and Samson. However, if you read the book as a whole, you realize that the main theme is deterioration. The people continuously disobey God while the heroes themselves are progressively corrupt, eventually culminating in the genocidal Benjamite War. Samson, as the last Judge before said war, is in fact the most morally-corrupt Judge in the book. Most of the better known Judges were actually horrible people. The whole book was written to validate the need for a united kingdom. "In those days there was no king in Israel, everyone did what was right in his own eyes."

Absolutely! Tales like Samson are really showing the reader what not to do and act like. It's also a message of grace though. Despite all Samson's mistakes and the mistakes of the Jewish people themselves, God was still with his people, always giving them the opportunity for redemption. Even if they don't deserve it. That grace is a pretty important piece of Judeo-Christian theology.

Ehm... the book is not chronological - in fact that Benjaminite war actually takes place in the beginning of the period. But thematically it fits better at the end, so that is where the author (implied to be Samuel - the last judge) put it. Think of the book as more of an anthology - a series of stories to recount how things go wrong when you disobey God - but also how he will still uphold his promises.

And I have some answers. It'll called the Mari Lwyd and a group of men carry the skull around on a pole which is covered by a sackcloth under which someone hides. The then took the skull to the local houses and sang to gain entry, you are then meant to deny entry through song and this continues until one side gives up. If the homeowner gave up they would give the men food and drink.

I would like to say that Samson was included in the Tanakh as an examples of intelligence over strength, but our boy Solomon was a very smart guy... and he still manages to screw things up for the ancient israelites. Maybe it's women are bad news, but you have Ruth and Ester. Maybe it's just that guys are idiots around women? (Or just that guys are idiots?)

Interesting translation of Delilah's antics as role-play. I don't think that's really how we can define it as they were most likely married at that point, or at least living together (it is Sampson after all). Still it brings some context to the scenario.

The pillars of the Phillistine temple were not likely the stone Greco-Roman pillars we often imagine. They were more likely Cedar pillars, that held up the cross beams that, in turn, held up the ceiling beams, planks, stones, etc. It would still be a pretty good feat of strength to move them off of their bases (which would cause the whole ceiling to cave in, but it isn't the same as as pushing over Greco-Roman stone pillars.

Yeah, Samson wasn't even close to a king. Judges were supposed to give moral guidance and leadership, but they usually did a bad job of it, and that was even when the people listened to them. The time of the judges was thoroughly corrupt, as there there was no enforcement for the laws God had given them. Isreal was repeatedly punished with captivity, and repeatedly saved by a God-chosen judge when they begged for help. The book ends with "there was no king in Isreal, and every man did what was right in his own eyes", meaning whatever he felt was right, regardless of whether or not it was. One of the last stories demonstrates this, as a traveling priest has his concubine raped to death by a rapid mob, and he gets really pissed about it, cuz, you know, he was kinda using that concubine. Were they gonna buy him another? Nooo, so, well, a brutal little war amongst the tribes seems to be the appropriate response, yes? See what I mean? This was one of Isreal's darkest periods, morally speaking. And while the majority of their kings were also corrupt, they at least maintained some amount of order.

That’s probably because the people who retold the story to you were scrubbing out the more gruesome details because: 1) you were a kid & they wanted to make the story a bit more age appropriate, and/or 2) they wanted to make the Bible seem a bit less violent than it actually is at times, or 3) they hadn’t read the original story, but they were also told the scrubbed version for one (or both) of the first 2 reasons.
