Somewhere in the depths of the underworld, there lives a giant creature called the Horerczy that belches swarms of shapeshifting butterfly demons known as alps. These little demons go out into the world seeking humans to sit on while they sleep, causing sleep paralysis, nightmares, and sometimes taking a sip or two of the humans blood. But when they are caught and vanquished, they disappear back into the mouth of the Horerczy. And sometimes, they tell stories of their adventures in our realm.

For those who want to know: Alps were originally fairies. Infact the middlegerman term Alp or Alb has the same linguistical roots as Elf. So picture Legolas sitting on your chest and giving you horrible dreams.

Here a few more tips to deal with Alps: -Throw a polished knife over them to let there true form appear -Pentagrams. Draw it over windows and doors to keep them from enterin. But beware: if you draw them crooked, the Alps can come in, but not out. - If they are humanborn, the offering of some lifestock gifted them voluntarily should keep them at bay

Cool story. I know that Alps aren't the only creatures that give you sleep paralysis/ nightmares. There is the Mara or Mare,a creature from German and Slavic folklore. The Mara does pretty much the same thing as an alp except the only difference is that a Mara is female and not male. Also Japan has some yokai that does this: the Makuragaeshi or the pillow flipper and Kanashibari( Also fun fact, the name Kanashibari is literally the term used for sleep paralysis) Makuragaeshi and Kanashibari seem to be harmless yokai, but they still cause sleep paralysis.

It's not just an eye, they only showed it's giant eye for scale. At 0:23 you can see it's entire head with the eye and the mouth.

I get sleep paralysis all the time, pretty much every other night. Seeing (i.e. hallucinating) ghosts and demons and portals to other dimensions is pretty much normal to me at this point. It also seems like most people my age that I know also get it now and again, so I guess the number of alps must have increased some time in the last decade or two...

The german word for nightmare is Albtraum, literally alb dream. And a other name for this creature is Mahr or Nachtmahr . Yes we are going here full circle , it is related to the word nightmare it self.

fun facts : 1. the German word for nightmare (albtraum) is derived from these creatures so its Alb + Traum which means dream. 2. Alp or Darkalp is a new word for a creature that was called Mahr before that. this is where the German word Nachtmahr is derived from which then became the Englisch nightmare 3. Alp also is the old german word for Elf and in German, the word is spelled Alb.

In the Philippines we have the same kind of monster called batibat( it's bigger, chubbier, tree dweller) they are sometimes guarding trees and if you cut their trees. If you sleep they will sat on stomach give you nightmares. (But they don't feed on blood etc.
