Utgarda-Loki actually waited until the gods were outside the gates of his land before revealing the truth because he was actually intimidated by the gods and said if he had known just how close Thor would come to destroying them, he wouldn't have ever let them inside his land.

I have heard diffrent telling of this story, but the version I remember clearly was this: When they came to Utgarda-Loki castle, they had two servants of Thor tagging along. Þjálfi and Röskva. Þjálfi raced against Hugi, whom he lost three times over too. He was raceing against thought. Thor had drank the horn so much, that he created the tides we have today("And when you drank from the horn and thought it slow to sink, I dare say that was a miracle I had not expected to be possible; the far end of the horn was submerged in the sea, but you did not see that. Now, when you come to the shore, you will see what kind of sip you drank from the sea; there is now a sandy beach where there used to be water." Röskva Bore witness to this all, though still under the illusion casted by the giants. Oh; Thor also smacked his hammer ontop of the Giant Skrýmir head. Three times. Which woke the giant up and taunted Thor by saying: "Was that a acorn hitting my head? Or maybe a small piece of a branch?" On the Third time, he warned Thor that such Cockyness would be punished in the Utgarda-Loki castle and adviced him to turn back, before he picked up his knapsack and left deeper into the forrest. Also; During Thors fishing trip, he held so steadfast on the rope that he planks on the bottom of the ship gave away and through the holes pour seawater in. He managed to haul the serpent head onto the side of the boat, above the water, when Hymir in panic cut the rope. Thor got so pissed, that he didn't just "Gently pushed" him off the boat. He heaved Hymir overboard.(Basicly; He YEEEETED Hymir of the boat)

That's not how Jormungandr killed Thor. In the midst of their battle, Jormungandr managed to get in a bite on Thor. The adrenaline of battle kept Thor alive long enough to kill Jormungandr, but after the deed was done, he was so exhausted that Jormungandr's venom was able to take effect, and Thor walked a total of nine steps before the venom finally killed him.

I actually have a personal theory partially related to Thor vs Jormungandr, It's also related to Susano-o vs Orochi and Heracles vs the Hydra. All 3 of these legends have the same basic premise of a God, in some way related to thunder and lightning, slaying a mighty, serpentine beast. So my personal theory is that there's some sort of proto-mythology from some ancient civilization that saw dinosaur fossils get exposed after a particularly powerful thunderstorm

The Greeks and Norse were both indo-European and it's very likely that the proto-Indo-Europeans had a story about a thunder god vs a giant serpent that got passed down. See other myth's from other Indo-European cultures like the Persian Fereydun vs Zahhak or the Slavic Perun vs Veles or the Hindu Indra vs Vritra. Susanoo v Orochi is most likely the Japanese adaptation of the myth, brought there indirectly from India with the spread of Buddhism. (It should be noted that there is a good chance that Marduk v Tiamat is also borrowed from the Indo-european Hittites)

There actually is a popular academic theory that draws parallels between the mythologies of the various Indo-European cultures and attempts to reconstruct the original proto-indo-european myths much like the reconstruction of the proto-indo-european language. The most widely accepted figure is "*Dyēus," the sky father, which lead to figures like Odin and Zeus and even the Latin words "deus" and "deity." Unfortunately Japan is not an Indo-European culture and so likely was not inspired by the same myths, and Wikipedia mainly notes parallels between the Hydra and other near eastern myths containing multi-headed serpents, rather than cultures as distant as Scandinavia. In general though comparative mythology is fascinating and if you're interested you should definitely do more research into the academic study.

This motiff is called Chaoskampf, literally "the struggle against Chaos" and it's far more ubiquitous than the just among the Indo Europeans. There's Marduk vs Tiamat in the Enuma Elish, Yahweh (who most scholars agree was some kind of storm god in the early Israelite Religion) vs Leviathan in the Bible, Baal vs Lotan in the Caananite Religion, Susanoo vs Yamato-no-Orochi in Japanese Mythology. The phenomenon where similar myths, like the Chaoskampf, appear independently in various cultures is often referred to as "convergent cultural evolution". Within this field, recurring patterns, like the Chaoskampf, are often seen as evidence of universal human experiences, psychological archetypes, or common responses to similar environmental challenges. Another example is the Flood Myth.

Ragnarok is such a classic self fulfilling prophecy. If the Aesir hadn't thrown Jormugandr to the sea, it would have never become the powerful serpent of Midgard. If they hadn't banish Hela she would have never become the queen of Hel. And if they had never chained Fenrir by tricking it and abused his love for Tyr, it would have never warred against them

I really like your videos, keep up this fun content-making. I need to correct you on a few details. The story in which Thor and Loki go on a trip to Jötunheim is one of my favorites and I've listened and read it many times (just like other stories). So I noticed a few mistakes, most of which are not important due to the main topic of the video, but one is. When Thor tries to lift Útgard-Loki's cat, he's able to elevate the cat far above his head, so high, that only one paw of the cat touches the ground. Thus Thor presents himself so strong, that he almost lifted the whole body of Jörmungandr.

Fun fact, according to the myths, when Thor crushes Jormangandr's head, he'll rupture the poison glands, getting a face full of poison. They say that after killing the serpent, Thor will survive for just 9 more steps before succumbing to the poisons. (I'm using future-tense terms because Ragnarok was set to happen in the far-off future.)

Norse Mythology was very much into the concept of fate, urðr or wyrd. (Which is the root word for weird). So unlike the story telling in video which describe Ragnarök as happing in the past, it was more of a prophecy. Thing that were going to happen. And showed even the gods could not escape fate. And trying to run from your fate was seen as dishonourable. But the prophecies of what was going to happen lose enough that you decided on the terms. So if fate had decided you were going to die by a bear attack, you could decide if it was going to be when you defended the village from it, or if it was when you tried to run away from it. Of course, we only have a small selection of the tales from that era, and also from a few specific places. This as an oral tradition, so tales likely differed a lot. Due to the small amount we have preserved, it is hard to tell how widespread different tales were about the gods. And the best preserved examples are not written by those believed in these tales. But Christians after. Though of course there are some rune stones and iconography from the time that shows for example Thor going fishing. Anyway, what I mean to say is that there might have been quite big differences in the tales, and some parts were likely influenced by Christianity. Still a topic of research.

Actually in the real Norse mythology, Loki wasn't Thor's adoptive brother, but instead was blood-brothers with Odin (Thor's father), making Loki Thor's uncle, so by that logic, Jormungander is actually Thor's cousin. No clue as to why Marvel decided to make Thor and Loki brothers. But then again, Hollywood, so...

@@EdgyAngel It might have, at the time the comic book char was made, have been thought to be more digestible for an audience probably broadly less well versed in mythology. It's genuinely wild if you think about how different 1962 (when the Thor comic character came out) compared to 2023 - 60 years ago anyone interested in the mythology would have had to physically get a book, which might actually be hard to acquire depending on the area you live in; and might even not be well translated. I'm not saying the writers didn't do research - just... if you think about the information a regular comic reader of the time would have access to there's just... a lot they wouldn't likely know. Just saying "Yeah this is his adopted brother" is... simpler. - and of course 60 years later the comic character more or less has his completely own separate mythology built up now that makes it hard to alter things without... well I'm sure you've seen fandom be... fandom before. Idk, that's my best guess anyway.

I'm sure that Utgard-Loki and his giants had created jokes to keep the losers "burned in humiliation" like: one says "you know plenty about Loki at the table" and the other says "I don't know" the first "Loki after 2 crumbs he's full" or "you know how and Thor fights. He is such a sissy, that a granny puts him on the ground", this is for Zoey "you know how Thor is with cats. he's so weak, he's even scared of a mouse" there was also Þjálfi against hugi in the race (hugi = the thought)

So couple of things... The World Serpent isn't at the 'edge of the world' he rests at the bottom of the seas, wrapped around the bottom and with his tail in his mouth. Thor and the serpent battle takes MUCH longer in Ragnorak, and Thor dies in the end due to poison from the snake himself not the air... (also Ragnorak hasn't happened yet)

God of rain and thunder slaying a serpent is a common story in al the Indo European religions. In India it is Indr vs the serpent Vritr, but the story has differences, and ours is very philosophical and properly documented.

The illustration of Thor trying to lift Utgard-Loki's cat is... I hesitate to say "wrong", but it's wrong. The problem of lifting the Midgard-kitty isn't that it's too heavy, it's that it's too LONG. Much like if you try to lift under a cat's belly, you'll find that the cat will extend unto arbitrary length so as to stay on the ground. Its not a "chonky cat" problem, it's a "longcat" problem.

Oh. I just realised when they say "encircled the world" they mean like in a flat earth scenario. Like a great coiled serpent, rather than a belt. That makes the imagery of it so much cooler.

Norse mythology is a bit confusing when it comes to ragnarok. It's simultaneously a world ending event that's going to happen, and an event that already happened. They're telling this story like they're living in a post-ragnarok world, and they say that thor died, yet the Norse still prayed to him as if he was alive

Fun fact about Ragnarok: Because there was no actual 'Norse pantheon', rather a group of competing faiths, whilst it is foretold by the Odin-worshipers that only Baldr will survive in to the new world (possibly a myth introduced or manipulated by Christians looking to syncretise Odinic worship) other tales hint that, in fact, only Freyja will be born anew. Given that she's also burned to death and just springs back to life unharmed in the Aesir-Vanir war her entire character arc from start to finish is that she is literally the indestructible cycle of life and death.
