Last we saw Ōkuninushi, he showed kindness to a hare in distress, and the hare of Inaba had foretold that he would be the one that the princess of Yakami would desire. And this was true, because when his 80 brothers showed up at court and declared their intentions, the princess insisted she would only marry him--so thus, his brothers began trying to kill him off...

Most myths have some kind of purpose and direction. The Australian Aboriginals have myths that serve as geographical guides. Myths from Western culture often serve as moral life guides. (Looking at you, Brothers Grimm...) Is it just me or does this Japanese myth seem to serve as a shaggy dog story? I seem to be missing something...

probably because its a mix bag of different variations on a older myth written by different people. that happens a lot with myths in general. also it does sound a lot like the kinda of story someone would tell around a fire to entertain children, something that is very common with a lot of Japanese myths.

The instantly fall in love with stuff isn't so much "because myths" as it is because charismatic lechery. In The longer version its kind of a running theme that Okuninushi seduces and beds girls and then usually steals their fathers wealth and power. Some versions even has him turning into objects and animals in order to impregnate resistant targets.

Jorge Myles - interesting nite on Aztec mythology: If you die in battle, childbirth or as a sacrifice, you go to warrior-paradise with the Hummingbird Warrior god. If you die of anything else, you have to make a long dangerous journey to get reborn and try again. That shows why they were so OK with sacrifice.
@bazingaburg8264
@bazingaburg8264 2 жыл бұрын
@@Ajehy Thank you ^^ While i love the stories myths tell, their cultural function is what interests me most about them. Regarding "ok with sacrifice": Christians are ok with the sacrifice of Jesus, because we're the benefitiaries. The ends justify the means so much that stopping that vile act would have condemned the conscionable person responsible for the rescue along with all of humankind. A doctrinal detail rarely mentioned in church, because it's so counter to modern moral understanding. Cherry-picking for the win, i guess.

The mascot and flag at the end of the story is for the current day Izumo City in Shimane Prefecture. The City's main claim to fame is Izumo Taisha, a shrine that used to be the tallest structure in ancient Japan and is dedicated to Okuninushi. People go here to pray for en-musubi, fateful encounters, and every fall it's said that all of the gods and goddesses in Japan with leave their shrines throughout the country and gather here to eat, drink, and decide what kinds of connections people will make in the next year. Izumo and Shimane Prefecture as a whole is an awesome place where you can explore sights related to mythology! (It's estimated that about one thrid of Japan's founding mythology take place in Shimane and neighboring Tottori Prefecture)
