The problem is people value being famous more than doing good business.

he's so right. as writers, they absolutely fucking deserve a percentage of the master. the song LITERALLY WOULDN'T EXIST without them. yet they see none of the streaming revenue? fuck the fuck off. i feel his anger too. this industry grinds you down so much man. i'm obviously not at the jon bellion level, but the amount of time you hear the phrase "it's just industry standard" - WELL LET'S CHANGE THE STANDARD THEN BECAUSE IT'S NOT WORKING FOR THE PEOPLE CREATING THE LITERAL MUSIC. ugh.

No. They get paid a big chunk for the writing the song. If it flops then the label has all the risk and wastes 5,6 figures on a dud song. While the writer is living in a new house. If it works out then the label deserves the risk.
@chrisparsons1766Ай бұрын
Lol yes another average entitled lazy musician. If you didn’t master the song why should you earn money from it? You ironically want to steal money from the people who mastered the song cause they should be getting all of the money from the work they did. Continue that line of thought and you’ll end up a one hit wonder trash can artist like this guy

I love how straightforward and honest Jon is in the beginning 💯💯💯 Thank you for the reminder and sharing all this knowledge. This is why I am all about DIY and being Independent with the Artists and Producers I work with. It will take longer, but the pay off in the long run is insane 💸💸💸

Can’t believe he wrote Holy. All makes sense why I loved that song so much and I was heavily listening to Jon at the time

So I’ve been making beats for about 5 years now and I still don’t understand the music industry. Labels and all that is the MOST confusing thing ever. I just like making beats man.

Stay as Independent as you can. I am also a producer and it is such a free feeling to know i can make music and release it and not owe anything to anyone but also i dont have to be involved in shady business deals. Keep pushing! I know you can be great!

That's why people really should stop hating on the artists in the industry that are speaking out against artists rights because they say "you're rich." As a working artist who is trying to make it at that level and also have good quality, it's sad.

I'm on a pretty big label (6th biggest in the world according to billboard charts) and the artists get WAY more than 50% on the royalties for their releases. Always found it crazy af that artists will be willing to sign these crappy deals where they no longer own the rights to their songs.

All BS. These labels aren’t charities. If the song flops then the label has all the risk and wastes 5,6 figures on a dud song. While the writer is living in a new house. If it works out then the label deserves the rewards. The $2MM he mentions from that one song includes 10 other fails, marketing costs & other overheads etc. This is why labels are doing 360 deals now.

Because it fluctuates bro, every song and label gives different point to writers and producers, so he’s probably been apart of deals where he’s had 6,7,3,4,5,2 the point is, it’s not a lot.

Lol exactly it’s hilarious watching these man babies cry over decisions they made lmao. Most artists know less than nothing about business and expect everyone to hold their hand through all of it
@filltheglass2618Ай бұрын
@@chrisparsons1766 100%. They all want 0 risk and all the rewards. I suppose if the label loses money he’ll be happy to refund his advance?
@markfisher1062Ай бұрын
I agree but at the same time that doesn’t mean these artists aren’t being screwed. Labels take advantage of this and take way more than they should be. Not only that, the labels know what songs are gonna blow and which ones won’t. They literally have control over it. So they are screwing over the artists
@filltheglass2618Ай бұрын
@@markfisher1062 In all fairness, if labels knew which songs would blow they wouldn’t go out of business. Multiple albums don’t do well despite massive budgets and marketing. In 2013 $25MM, $36MM in today’s money, was spent on Lady Gaga’s Album, Artpop. The album had the largest 2nd week decline in sales. The label did not recoup that investment.
