It is so helpful to hear you say that working with watercolors is actually difficult. It eases my mind about all the mistakes I have made in my early attempts at working with this medium. I have seen many watercolorists on youtube put up posts of "super easy beginner" watercolor paintings, and try to encourage the viewer by saying how easy it is to paint similar images. But their well-intentioned efforts sometimes left me discouraged when my attempts to follow their techniques didn't turn out remotely as good. You are honest when you say it is hard, and I can better accept that as a starting point because it takes away a lot of the pressure of being a perfectionist. Thank you for that. Even the title of your series is comforting - Extreme beginner.

Getting lost in the practice is always a good thing. 😉I had to use a page that was damaged by the cat.....and took advantage and turned it into a lesson in washes and blends of colors. Thanks for the great insights. I really enjoyed the beginning of this video too. I put to practice your suggestion of 15-20 mins daily and 1 hour a week of non stop drawing. WOW!! What a difference. Now I find myself wanting to draw all the time to see what I can create. It's fun learning perspective, shading and depth. It's been WILD to see how far I have come in such a short time. THANKS for this great series, I really have to give you credit for being so incredibly encouraging @Chris Petri. You are the ART Teacher we wish we all had in school or in our LIFE. We have you NOW though, and the lessons are always brilliant! Thank you for making us see the ARTIST in us.🧡✨

I feel so lucky that I found this wonderfully kind and talented gentleman on KZfaq! Your videos are so incredibly helpful, as I was stuck in not knowing where to start or how to practice basic skills in a way that would work for me. You have solved that problem for me, and inspired me along the way. You're always saying thank you to ask for watching, but in all fairness I think we are the lucky ones :-)

Luckily as long as I've painted, I don't let ego get in the way. I always feel I'm a beginner. There's always need for improvement. Being a perpetual beginner keeps things fresh and your mind open. I like these exercises and plan on doing them. I've got new brushes and paints so this will definitely help to become familiar with them.

First of all, I look for your EXTREME BEGINNER posts. I have probably seen them all but now that I have some beginner paints and have found my dusty copy paper and invested in some dollar store brushes (in case I totally can't do it) I can follow you with your extreme beginner classes. I would recommend Super Extreme classes for myself but I might have to create those myself. LOL, I have found that I really like the breaks! I just totally relax when you say that we are taking a break now. I take one also and when I come back...however long mine is... we are off to the next thing and I am relaxed and ready. Thank you. You are such a nice instructor. Being a beginner is not easy and I feel tense doing these things I'm not used to _(especially sketching) so your relaxed style of teaching a beginner is very helpful. Thank you so much for your gentle teachings. I have always been afraid to draw ANYTHING but my confidence is building with my daily sketching homework. When you said, "Let's just draw this Paintbrush right here." I just thought I would die laughing!!! Yes, I can do that!! Thank you!!! I CAN do that!!! YES!! LOL For your eyes only... to my total surprise...I can actually sketch fairly decently and I'm a quick study with the painting. Just wait until my watercolor paper and my good paints and brushes come!!!! You give me hope!

Best to use 140lb (300g/m) paper of any brand. I work with a 2x4 under my Masonite board, so it’s a slight tilt of about 10-15 degrees. Also it’s best to tape down the borders of your paper with painters tape, Frog brand works really well. 👍😎
