Extreme Budget Restoration on a Rusty 1948 GMC. Turning Scrap Metal Into Yard Art

It's spring cleaning here at Carter Auto Restyling. One of my favorite things to do is scab together all the scrap metal I have laying around into something that resembles a car. We will take the remains of a 1948 GMC and do some horrible bodywork and paint work to fool the unsuspecting public into thinking it's a beautiful classic truck!

I know of a couple that have arranged to pay 1000 bucks for a similar truck( one that is beyond repair)to sit at the entrance of their acreage. So keep that in mind when valuing your stuff. Keep up the great work!

I was glad to hear the music director came back even if it was for a short while. I guarantee that if you painted the entire truck one color, maybe that green, several people would stop and ask if it's for sale. Who knows?

I thoroughly enjoyed that. Playing with unfixable stuff is fun! I had a '59 Beetle that was so rotten some old hemp rope was tied around the roof to hold the remains of the floors in. Popped in a borrowed engine from a friend, and wired it up just enough to run. Trailered it to a big VW show and drove the pile onto the show field and parked up in a line of gleaming show cars. The derelict radio still functioned and left it on just for fun. Was easily the most photographed car in the show that year!

Oddly satisfying. Five to three window conversions will be the next big thing right after Mustang fastback to coupe conversions take off. The ice pick and bondo method was used as a way to shrink up some stretched metal, eliminate oil canning, & provide a grip for the bondo which was purported to be space age material that was going the last pretty much forever. In the dry desert, we were fond of leaving the slide hammer holes in the metal because that purportedly gave a nice grip for the Bondo. In Canada, that would probably rust up in about 2 weeks. There was a technique of splooging it through the holes and then lifting to provide some suck-tion to allegedly mushroom out the (actual Bondo-brand) Bondo on the unseen, inaccessible backside to anchor it all firmly. I'm going to laugh my ass off if 50 years from now a future Kyle protege on his SpaceTube channel visits Earth and begins to restore that particular cab commenting on the work done on it.

I thought there is NOONE on this planet (except me) crazy enough to do a thing like that. About ten years ago we pulled a 1952 Austin A30 out of a junkyard where it had been sitting for about fifty years. Actually the lower half of the body was worse than this one. I cut the rear half off, (it was a sedan and not a station as in the movie), constructed some solid steel tube supports in order to prevent it from falling apart. I used steel, aluminium, some bondo and wood to make the front and the rest until the b pillar look like a car again. then I painted it with the color of the "Wallace ad Grommit" car. There were so many hours involved and the car looked amazingly good. I put in a battery under the hood and some bulbs in the headlights and put some moving sensors under the front bumper. People were amazed that when they came close to my front door the headlights were lighting up. After a few years in the rain the vehicle was detoriating more and more. While most of the metal held up amazingly well, the wooden rocker panels desolved to nearly not existing and the paint started flaking off. If I ever have the energy I will fix it up a bit to last a few years more. My autistic Son loves this car as he is a fan of the Aardman Studio films. Loved your aproach and the result as well.

Put the finished project in someones basketball court for kids to ride on or play with... great use of pieces and parts... better than seeing someone take nice rigs that get high scrap prices right now, cutting off the front for wall art and trunks for couches. One very bad thing happened on the twenty ninth of april this year... Brent, from halfass kustoms shop burnt to the ground taking a good many of his memories along with the 35 dodge project and turned all into molten metal mess. He might come out swinging hard to replace some of it but the hurt will remain for the rest of his life. Thankfully no one was hurt. I hope that you, Scott, Strongs garage, along with Karl from make it kustom all pull to help him recover it some

I think that makes very nice yard art. Strategic use of shrubbery and flowers would make that a great focal point in your landscape. You could even add a water fountain and bird feeders for wildlife entertainment for the cats. Some cheap solar lights and you're good to go. I use old sinks and enameled bedpans (flower potties). KYLE, you have created the perfect center piece for the new craze of a "Water Works" feature using an old pickup. I thought that was going to be the surprise ending. I don't know about in Saskatchewan, but down South, it is a going thing. But, we Southerners do have a tendency to get a little crazy from time to time. One pickup has about an 18-inch wide flow of water cascading out of the rear window into the bed and running along the bed and water-falling again into a pond to be recycled. It is eye-catching for sure.
