You telling us to season our turkey made me laugh. I cooked a full thanksgiving dinner for my parents for the first time in years, my mother is VERY particular with her food. She likes blandddd. BLAND. She normally just buys a turkey breast and just flops it into a roasting pan and shoves it into the oven for HOURS longer than she should. My dad has become so sick to the point that I’ve needed to move home to help them and my dad has been LIVING for food. He told me I could never move out again, he’d die from starvation 😂😂. When I tell you the shock on her face as I was shoving the butter I seasoned the night before under the skin of the turkey, I mean she was SHOCKED. Browning sausage for homemade stuffing blew her mind. Cherry coke and pineapple ham actually peaked her interest though (it ended up being her favorite). Her surprise was cute when I used the turkey drippings to make homemade gravy. Everything turned out amazing. She was so surprised at how good and juicy the turkey was. Our community gave out turkey’s for the holidays for elders, our family ended up getting three of them. My mom told me I couldn’t go back to Utah until I cooked all the turkeys. When my dad finished eating his dinner he made the cutest comment. “I obviously didn’t marry your mom for her cooking ability. Musta been how pretty she is.” I love those two 😂😂. I’m so happy I could express my love and appreciation for them through food and I’m given the opportunity to do so.

My mom always bought a few holiday foods every month. She would put aside can pineapple, can olives, can green beans, can cream soup, box stuffing mix, can cranberries, can mushrooms, butter, can pumpkin pie mix, etc. In November she'd buy the turkey, potatoes, and rolls. I always thought that was smart. She put it in a cardboard box and woe to anyone who took anything outta that box! 😂

I love that practice too, although since we keep a "tiny grocery store" (a well-stocked pantry that we rotate) I don't usually have to buy anything in particular for the day except a turkey. If we couldn't get that, we'd still have turkey, because I have a bunch in jars that I've previously pressure-canned, so no worries! Do you usually have some of the "traditional" stuff?
@audreyhughes9569
@audreyhughes9569 Жыл бұрын
I keep a very well-stocked food storage. So I definitely have all the supplies for the traditional foods my family eats. I always keep a turkey in my freezer. Simply because no matter how bad things get a turkey dinner always makes you feel like everything will work out and that bird will feed a large family for atleast a week! So all I really purchase is a little fresh produce and maybe a few dairy products.

I liked to buy a very big turkey for Thanksgiving and we were only 3 people and a big dog, no 12lb for my family.19-22lb. Baked my turkey in the roasting bags, those suckers were great, no basting. Do you know all the stuff you can make w those left overs. Turkey Tetrazzini, turkey pot pies, sandwiches w the turkey, sausage bread stuffing and mayo on 1 side and cranberry sauce on the other slice of bread…oh la la so yummy….Turkey Alfredo and hot turkey sandwiches and of course what my mom made was turkey w veg-all mixed w left over gravy over mashed potatoes. In the summer would do a turkey but season it w Italian spice w butter and it changes the flavor of the turkey (under the skin). Then serve it w pasta salad or potato salad, yum

Great ideas. For those who don’t attend our church Christmas dinner, we plate up servings for those who are home bound or don’t want to attend church. We don’t have a Thanksgiving dinner at church, but that would be fun.

We have a neighbor who is alone every holiday, we take her meals for everything. Along with cookies and things throughout the year, just to make sure she knows shes never alone as long as we are here. (She doesn't like to leave her house, so she wont actually come over for dinners) her son visits throughout the week, to bring groceries and stuff, but she never gets to see her grandchildren. Covid had her so scared she doesnt leave her home.

Our little church pays for and delivers Thanksgiving meals to “shut ins”. (Meals on wheels doesn’t do this holiday meal). My husband and I are participating in our daughter’s Friendsgiving celebration. People that don’t have family are encouraged to attend. We are doing the turkey and dressing and corn casserole. Other people are bringing food also. It’s important to think outside the box. Although we are blessed and have big family gatherings, other people are not as fortunate. God bless everyone! I loved this video! I’m super impressed this young lady searched through her pantry and got creative. Love the homemade cream of mushroom!

Tip for deviled eggs, if you have any messed up whites when you peal them add them to the yolk mix. Say you cut the egg in half and half is messed up just add it to the yolk mix. It’s adds a little more bulk to the filling without having to do much. And it still tastes amazing!! ☺️

Slow cooker! What a great idea. I brine off brand turkeys. I never had a dry turkey. One year we couldn't afford additional groceries. My mother-in-law and I decided a harvest feast doesn't require a turkey. We were going to use the blessings we stored in the freezers. Three days before we cooked I got a windfall I did buy a ham and turkey. That's all I bought. When we invited cousin to sit with us or get a plate he said no until he saw fried fish on the table. He was amazed with all the food we had. That's the true blessings of the Lord.

If you like the Starbucks egg bite things, I would saute some veggies, and take 1 dozen eggs, a brick of soft cream cheese and 1 stick of butter and mix together and season well. Add the veggies and cheese if desired and bake in silicone molds. These freeze so well and taste amazing. And when I have a whole basket of eggs from my chickens, I use this recipe to get rid of it

Amazing prices down there. Good for Southern Mama for her ability to budget! A turkey here costs $50-60 for a small frozen decent one. $80-90 for a turkey to feed 20. Free range is what we usually get. Too many preservatives make a few of us ill. However, I do make it all count and last because I have enough sides and flash freeze sliced turkey and the diced turkey for many meals afterward.

Hi Brooke, What a yummy Thanksgiving Meal! Besides the traditional Southern sides and a Turkey or Ham, over the years we have done the non traditional meal fixings too, using what we had in the pantry, freezer ect! We have had Steaks, baked potatoes, salad, yeast rolls and the traditional pies, We have done homemade pizzas and salad, BBQ sandwiches, Cole slaw, potato salad, baked beans, and desserts! We have had a roast with potatoes, carrots. Onions, other vegetable sides,cornbread, pies! Spaghetti, big bowls of chili with cornbread muffins or a crusty loaf of homemade bread, a salad and desserts! Had Pans of Lasagna once too or how about everyone's Mexican favorites, or stroganoff, Steaming bowls of Homemade soup, vegetable, oyster stew, claim chowder, broccoli cheddar, potato, bean with ham or bacon, or whatever is a hit with your family! Or even less expensive, make omelettes, fruit, muffins, homemade biscuits and gravy, hash browns, fried potatoes,or even, pancakes, waffles, crepes, ect with fruit, preserves topped with whipped cream! The ideas are endless and you are still having a yummy meal with the family, friends or neighbors who mean the most to you! Another cost cutter would be, the host family make the turkey, ham, or main dish and have your guests bring a side dish, beverages, breads or a dessert! Lots of variety for everyone and a good pot luck dinner for all to enjoy! It is okay to keep it simple and not be so exhausted from cooking and cleaning that you end up too tired to enjoy the peoplegathered around your table! God Bless and wishing a very Happy Thanksgiving to you, your family and your subscribers Donna NE GA mtns

Happy Thanksgiving to you, @Erica Stout. Just hubs and me this year. I'm taking a couple slices of turkey from the deli (only purchase for T-Day this year) making a package stuffing I have on hand, using home canned green beans and home canned Cranberry sauce and turkey gravy I made...rolling the sides up in the deli turkey (burrito style) and covering with the gravy to bake. I saw it on another KZfaq video for leftovers. But I'm having surgery a week before, so we are choosing it for our meal. Whatever you choose for yourself, I hope your day is greatly blessed.

The days, 73 with RA, Fibromyalgia, and a bad back, I cook my turkey the day before in a roasting bag. Like your crockpot turkey, not pretty but juicy and delicious. I cool it down a little, have hubby slice it, and lay it back in the roasting pan and cover with broth, which is a trick I saw on KZfaq that keeps the turkey from tasting "leftover". Day of, I heat it up just enough to make it hot and serve. Everyone loves it! Doing the same with a small ham. This year my oldest daughter is bring dressing, gravy, sweet potato casserole and my youngest daughter is bringing desert. I'll make the rolls using frozen roll dough. And I'll make a green been casserole because my son loves it. He's just bringing himself which is all I wanted because I haven't seen him in months.

I make all my sides in CrockPots with liners for easier cleanup. Mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, and my stuffing. The Turkey gets rinsed, dried, seasoned with salt and pepper, buttered and then covered in a bacon lattice blanket. A half onion and a couple carrots go in the turkey.... the bacon keeps it moist in the oven and you don't have to baste it. Turkey Bacon gravey is BOMB! I've stocked specifically for Thanksgiving and Christmas already. Then again, I also did Easter and St. Patrick's Day.

Thank you Brooke for making a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. I watch a lot of the $20 dollar tree dinners they are fun to see what people come up with but I find it hard to consider turkey or ham lunchmeat as a traditional Thanksgiving meal. I do Thanksgiving like you I cook a ham and my mom makes the turkey and stuffing. I make the rest of the sides mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole,green bean casserole, Mac n cheese, corn, cranberry sauce, rolls, and ambrosia. Dessert my daughter wants to make a couple of pies and my mom was going to make a dessert so I think we have dinner covered I start picking up an item here and an item there for many weeks before Thanksgiving that way I am not trying to pick it all up on Thanksgiving. Great job Brooke!

I have chickens and I felt the need to tell you that if your eggs float, you need to throw them out. Floating eggs means they've gone bad and you can get really sick. It's not worth it. After you cook your turkey in the crock pot, just brown it in the oven or, if you have one, use a torch on it to brown it. I garden and so I blanch and freeze my veggies and mark the ones I want "Thanksgiving Green Beans" or whatever veggie it is. My fruit pies get made late October and put in the freezer unbaked. Then I bake them frozen a couple days before Thanksgiving. The sweet potato and pumpkin pies get baked and then frozen. You can peel your potatoes several days ahead of time, but keep them in water. I buy turkey necks and make my broth ahead of time and freeze it. I try to do as much as possible ahead of time so I can enjoy the meal with everyone else. Even though I try to economize, there's no way I can make Thanksgiving dinner For $25. That's the cost of the turkey. I know my comment is almost a year late, but maybe someone can learn from it.

When my daughters hens were laying like crazy, I showed her how to freeze her eggs. Whip them up and freeze into silicone ice cube trays. When fully frozen pop them out and store in a ziplock freezer bag. You can thaw them out a few at a time in the fridge and use them in recipes, or as scrambled eggs.

I watched this 4 months ago and again today. I have watched a lot of your videos since this one, and I must tell you this. Without a doubt, this is my favorite video of yours. I watched your Easter one recently, and that's a close 2nd. This makes perfect sense in shopping from your pantry etc. For these larger meals/family functions. And, by the way, your turkey looked delicious 😊

Love, love, love this and your entire way of cooking and feeding your family! I've been working hard at this for years. I use Ibotta to take advantage of good food deals and for the third year, their free Thanksgiving dinner ( the turkey breast for the crockpot is my go-to!!). I start stashing away some T day side ingredients in early Fall. Whatever it takes to get the fam together and nobody leave hungry! Happy cooking and I hope your family has a great dinner!
